It may be simpler to start with the following and can be seen as easy to remember: I) Do not Kill II) Do not Steal III) Do not Commit Adultery IV) Do not Lie V) Do not Drink Intoxicants My interpretation of the precepts are: I) refrain from harming (this includes taking the life of or killing) any being II) refrain from taking what is not given, refrain from taking what one does not own i.e. refrain form stealing III) refrain from any form of sexual misconduct IV) refrain from gossip, false speech, lying and uttering of profanities V) refrain from taking any false intoxicants that may affect judgement It is the goal that all slowly master each of these 5 very logical precepts. These are not commands and there is no pressure for an individual to follow these principles. It is up to the individual alone to realise and apply effort to voluntarily practice these principles. It is said those who can adjust their lives according to these five principles could on the one hand live happily and peacefully and on the other automatically help others to live happily and peacefully. Some will find most of these precepts or guidance very easy to observe, some may find this observance very difficult, as long as we try and make the effort to observe these precepts diligently, at some stage in life, all of us and others around us will benefit greatly.
