Mccain exploits 9/11 @ Republican convention - Keith olbermann comments Last night, the Republican Convention showed a video which could be described as nothing less than "9/11 Porn" -- a video so demeaning, so craven, and so exploitative of the dead and those who survived the September 11 attacks, only by the grace of God, that it makes you question whether John McCain and Sarah Palin's campaign even has a soul, that they wouldn't reject the showing of the video. It included, among other things, slow-motion video of the second plane flying into the tower, and explosion, as well as the towers falling (again adjusted to slow-mo for dramatic effect), the moment thousands died. For politics, they showed this. Politics. As some of you may know, at the time, I worked for the Congressman who represented the WTC and the surrounding area. I saw and heard stories from our constituents and friends that, to this day, still make my eyes well up and stomach drop when I think of them. The video made me shake with anger. Republicans, apparently with the blessing of McCain and Palin, whored out the video of the moment of death of thousands of Americans for political gain. Senator McCain, I thought you said you were "change". This disgusting display was merely you taking the hand-off from Dick Cheney and George W. Bush, and gleefully running with it, with your "Pit Bull with lipstick" at your side. Another thing -- the title of my post. Arti is a Hindu ritual, in which light from wicks soaked in ghee (purified butter) or camphor is offered to one or more deities. It is said to have descended from the Vedic concept of fire rituals, or homa. The word may also refer to the traditional Hindu devotional song that is sung during the ritual. Aarti is performed and sung to develop the highest love for God. "Aa" means "towards", and "rati" means "the highest love for God" in Sanskrit. Aarti is generally performed twice or three times daily, and usually at the end of a puja or bhajan session. It is performed during almost all Hindu ceremonies and occasions. It involves the circulating of an 'Arati plate' around a person or idol and is generally accompanied by the singing of songs in praise of that deity or person (many versions exist). In doing so, the plate itself is supposed to acquire the power of the deity. The priest circulates the plate to all those present. They cup their down-turned hands over the flame and then raise their palms to their forehead - the purificatory blessing, passed from the deity's image to the flame, has now been passed to the devotee. The arati plate is generally made of metal, usually silver, bronze or copper. On it must repose a lamp made of kneaded flour, mud or metal, filled with oil or ghee. A cotton wick is put into the oil and then lighted, or camphor is burnt instead. The plate also contains flowers, incense and akshata. The purpose of performing arati is to ward off evil effects and the malefic influence of the 'evil eye'. Arati is hence performed on people of high social or economic status; small children during various ceremonies; on people who are going on or are coming back from a long journey; on a bride and bridegroom when they enter their house for the first time; at harvest; on anything else of importance. It is also performed on newly acquired property, or before an important task. It is believed that the idol of a deity too is susceptible to the evil eye, and needs regular arati, with the singing of special arati songs. These songs laud the glory of the deities and describe the benefits that one might gain by praying to them. Sometimes they also contain snippets of information on the life of the gods. Arati songs are particular to each deity. The most commonly sung arati is that to Vishnu. In most temples in India, arati is performed at least twice a day, after the ceremonial puja, which is the time when the largest number of devotees congregates. Buddhist Blessings (Added Images) The Buddhist blessing in Pali on this posting contains the Honouring of The Lord Buddha, Honouring the teaching; The Great Dhamma and the Honouring of The Great Maha Sangha, the Blessings then provide the precepts (guidance) that everyone voluntarily try to follow on a day to day basis. You do not need to be Buddhist to follow these precepts; it is for everyone without exclusion. It may be simpler to start with the following and can be seen as easy to remember: I) Do not Kill II) Do not Steal III) Do not Commit Adultery IV) Do not Lie V) Do not Drink Intoxicants My interpretation of the precepts are: I) refrain from harming (this includes taking the life of or killing) any being II) refrain from taking what is not given, refrain from taking what one does not own i.e. refrain form stealing III) refrain from any form of sexual misconduct IV) refrain from gossip, false speech, lying and uttering of profanities V) refrain from taking any false intoxicants that may affect judgement It is the goal that all slowly master each of these 5 very logical precepts. These are not commands and there is no pressure for an individual to follow these principles. It is up to the individual alone to realise and apply effort to voluntarily practice these principles. It is said those who can adjust their lives according to these five principles could on the one hand live happily and peacefully and on the other automatically help others to live happily and peacefully. Some will find most of these precepts or guidance very easy to observe, some may find this observance very difficult, as long as we try and make the effort to observe these precepts diligently, at some stage in life, all of us and others around us will benefit greatly.
