We have the functional manager and the project manager, the scrum master and the black belt, the product owner and the customer-on-site, the technical leader and the architect, the product manager and the chief engineer. Clearly that's too many leaders. So how many leaders should there be, what should they do, what shouldn't they do, and what skills do they need? This will be a presentation and discussion of leadership roles in software development -- what works, what doesn't and why. Speaker: Mary Poppendieck Mary Poppendieck started her career as a process control programmer, moved on to manage the IT department of a manufacturing plant, and then ended up in product development, where she was both a product champion and department manager. Mary considered retirement 1998, but instead found herself managing a government software project where she first encountered the word "waterfall." When Mary compared her experience in successful software and product development to the prevailing opinions about how to manage software projects, she decided the time had come for a new paradigm. She wrote the award-winning book Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit in 2003 to explain how the lean principles from manufacturing offer a better approach to software development. Logging Lord - Laos June 1996 On the Nakay Plateau of Laos, the logging trucks of General Cheng's Mountainous Area Development Company (BPKP) are a 24 hour concern. Ironically, he is also in charge of the Human Resettlement Programme, moving native people out of the forest into the modern world. The BPKP says traditional 'slash and burn' cultivation is destroying the forest, justifying the relocation of 20% of the population. After work Cheng often wanders into his own private zoo. With many rare animals caged-up, Cheng seeing no contradiction in saving a few specimens whilst destroying their natural habitat. The General is also fascinated by the diverse cultures in the forest and has plucked 95 children away from their families to receive an education at the BPKP's expense. 9 year old Noy tells of being frightened as the General whisked her away in his Russian helicopter, to study in Lak Xoa. Si Tea, as Village Chief, has been given the largest house in a BPKP model village, but whilst the BPKP claims Si Tea 'owns' his new home, he is not allowed to sell it. The first families live in relative comfort, but as the rest arrive, there simply won't be enough land to resettle everyone. HHMI description: Mature organisms have stem cells of various sorts, called adult stem cells. Adult stem cells supply cells that compensate for the loss of cells from normal cell death and turnover, such as the ever-dying cells of our skin, our blood, and the lining of our gut. They are also an essential source of cells for healing and regeneration in response to injury. Some animals, such as sea stars, newts, and flatworms, are capable of dramatic feats of regeneration, producing replacement limbs, eyes, or most of a body. It is an evolutionary puzzle why mammals have more limited powers of regeneration. Researchers are interested in pinpointing where adult stem cells reside and in understanding how flexible adult stem cells are in their ability to produce divergent cells such as muscle and red blood cells. Understanding the sources and the rules for the differentiation of adult stem cells is essential for tapping their therapeutic potential. Since consenting adults can provide adult stem cells, some people think that adult stem cells may be a less controversial area of research than embryonic stem cells.
