Lena Zavaroni - Going Nowhere (live 1981) - STEREO Remember Lena Zavaroni? The little 9-10 years old girl with the very strong, powerful, almost adult voice, who in 1973 conquered most of the world with "Mama, He's Making Eyes At Me". Lena continued as an adult with singing, but unfortunately also suffered from anorexia - an illness she couldn't control and which at a young age of 35 took her life in 1999. In many ways her struggling life can be compared to Karen Carpenter, who also suffered and died to anorexia, though Lena died due to complications after surgery in the brain, which was meant to cure her anorexia. But after seeing pictures of her from just before the surgery, I would say she most likely was too weak to do surgery on. Every time I see a video by Lena, I can't help but think her expression of a song can be compared to Edith Piaf. Lena's as well as Piaf's faces and eyes become part of the song and to me - well, they're both two small sparrows with strong voices. They are fantastic. When you see this video, you'll know what I mean. Here's Lena from 1981 - only 18 years old singing live "Going Nowhere" written by Neil Sedaka. A performance can't be stronger than this.
