Macedonian Film - Goodbye 20th Century! (8) Macedonian movie from 2000 "Goodbye 20th Century!" unfolds during three periods of time - it begins in post-apocalyptic 2019, continues 100 years earlier, and ends on December 31st, 1999, the last night of our time... It is 2019, after global destruction and descent into savagery. The immortal Kuzman, overburdened by the sins of incestuous love, tries to discover his destiny in order to learn how to die. As he enters the whirling cycles of time, we discover the blasphemy of our century - and how it is to close its' circle... The merry Santa Claus 2000, whose rage destroys our world, who condemns those still alive to immortal life, will engulf us all into oblivion. This is a film of a generation which has grown up and lives at the threshold of a war that neither begins nor ends... Directed by Aleksander Popovski and Darko Mitrevski from their own compilation of childhood myths, and set amidst the confusing background of time turmoil, mixed styles, opulent imagery and deliberate quotations, "GOODBYE 20th CENTURY" is a visionary tale which condemns the decayed century to a very scary death. At the first awards ceremony of the B-Movie Film Festival 1999 in Phoenix, New York, the Macedonian movie "Goodbye 20th Century!" won Best Set Design and Best Editing. Legnala Dana, zaspala - Kostadinka Palazova Macedonian Traditional Folk Song Song lyrics in English: Dana lay down, fell asleep, O God, in a little garden, in a little garden, O God, under an olive tree. The wind blew from the sea, O God, and broke off an olive branch, and broke off an olive branch, O God, it hit Dana on the face. Dana cried out and began to weep, O God, "Oh dear me, O my God, I had just fallen asleep, O God and was dreaming a sweet dream. In the dream three wild youths came, O God, Three wild youths, three untried youths; the first gave me a gold ring, O God, the second gave me an apple; the second gave me an apple, O God, the third kissed me. The one who gave me a gold ring, O God, may he crawl through it. The one who gave me an apple, may he remain green till the grave. The one who kissed me, may I spend my life with him. Macedonian Film "Happy New '49" (1) Movie from 1986, Director Stole Popov The action of the film takes place in June 1948. A group of Yugoslav students sent in USSR to be educated are coming back after the conflict between the two countries. In its visual foundation the film actually presents the atmosphere existing in a family which having been placed in such historical circumstances begins not to disintegrate but rather reintegrate itself in a ring of evil, imposed by the times and the incomprehensible situations which it begins to manifest. However, the principal subject matter of the film is the reaching of the Resolution of the Inform-bureau and the repercussions it had on our environment. Thus, this family represents an average social cell, typical of that time, the tragic destiny of which is just as characteristic. Its most outgoing member is Dragoslav Bota, a young man sent to study economy in the USSR. However, the consequences of the Resolution interrupt his studies and like many others he is forced to leave the USSR together with his fiance. The tragic misunderstandings and the prediction of certain dramatic tensions begin as early as his trip in the train, which takes these protagonists back to Yugoslavia. These events, this malice will above all threaten their spiritual state of mind, it will start to undermine their mutual contacts and relationships and it will devastate what we call humanistic space. These are roughly the traumatic whole, which constitute the dramatic structure of "Happy New '49". These are of course distributed in a series of basic dramatic posts, which belong and are carried by the various protagonists of this drama. Refugee children from the Greek Civil War (1946-49) The Macedonian child refugees (Detsa Begaltsi) from the Greek Civil War (1946-1949) The Macedonian child refugees (Detsa Begaltsi) - ethnic Macedonians born in Greece - fled their ancestral homes as children during the Greek Civil War (1946-1949). For many this was the first time they were able to be with their families in 55 years. Greek officials callously misrepresent this group as "enemy collaborators and criminals," even though the refugees were small children when they fled. As a matter of fact their return home had been blocked by Greek authorities because of their refusal to deny their Macedonian ethnic heritage. Those political refugees who agreed to misrepresent themselves and declare as "Greeks by genus" were allowed to repatriate in 1982. In this way the facade of "Greek purity" could be preserved. The change of policy to allow entry to "non-Greek" political refugees was the result of a new decision by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After more than five decades of separation the political refugees were allowed to enter Greece for a maximum of 20 days from August 20, 2003 to October 30, 2003. Many refugees were turned away by Greek border authorities because their passports listed their birth village using the old Macedonian name. Tito and Khrushchev visit Skopje after earthquake 1963 Nikita Khrushchev, the then First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito visited the Macedonian Capital Skopje after the earthquake hit in 1963 Thousands of people were feared dead after a massive earthquake rocked the Macedonian capital Skopje of the then Socialist Republic of Macedonia. The first quake occurred in Skopje (with a population of 200,000 people to that time) at about 5:00 pm and lasted for 20 seconds. Tremors from the earthquake were felt some 90 miles along the Vardar valley. More than 100,000 people were made homeless immediately as three-quarters of the city's buildings were damaged or destroyed. Early reports suggest hundreds were trapped beneath the rubble. The city's hospitals were already at breaking point and medical supplies and blood plasma were urgently required. The city's main railway station was destroyed as was the post office, cutting off all communication with the outside world. Rescue teams from across Yugoslavia were making their way to the stricken city. Eye-witnesses said buildings collapsed like packs of cards and people were running through the city to flee the carnage. President Tito of Yugoslavia said in a message of condolence sent immediately after the tragedy: "Together with all the peoples of Yugoslavia we will endeavour to mitigate the misfortune that has befallen your Republic." Seismological stations in Yugoslavia recorded the strength of the earthquake as 9.0 on the Mercalli scale (equivalent to 6.9 on the Richter scale.) Ethnic Macedonians protest in Melbourne, 24th May 24.05.2008 Thousands of Macedonian Australians have marched through Melbourne demanding the federal government formally recognise Macedonia's sovereignty. Organisers said an estimated 20,000 protesters turned out at the city's Carlton Gardens for a rally before the crowd marched to the Victorian Parliament. Rally spokesman Jordan Gruev said the Australian government had failed to recognise the Republic of Macedonia in its own right, adding that references such as "former Yugoslavia" and "Slav-Macedonians" were insulting, derogatory and "an abuse of our human rights". "(Prime Minister) Kevin Rudd and his foreign minister (Stephen Smith) can stand up to China, a modern superpower, and confront it over the Tibet issue, he can stand up for the East Timorese and he can stand up to the Burmese authorities but he can't stand up for Macedonia," Mr Gruev said. "Referring to our people as 'Slav-Macedonians' is insulting and derogatory. It's time the Australian government reversed its outdated and unfair foreign policy towards the Republic of Macedonia." Mr Gruev said many Macedonians who held Australian citizenship had also been denied entry to their birthplace by Greece, despite travelling on Australian passports. Protest organisers also urged Mr Rudd to encourage the Greek government to follow the prime minister's example in saying sorry to Australia's Aborigines and apologise to indigenous Macedonians in Greece whose human rights had been violated. "We have human rights too and we should be allowed to visit our birthplace if we want," Mr Gruev added. "This protest will go on until there is change - we will never waver."
