Tornado Sirens in Blaine,Coon Rapids, MN 11.07.07.01.00.p.m. Another video from my new cell phone from the deck of my apartment. Siren Test Day in Minnesota! these ones are from the Blaine, Coon Rapids area. On the boarder of Blaine and Coon Rapids, Both Blaine and Coon Rapids have overlapping siren coverage as many communities do. I grew up in Columbia Heights and Sirens can be heard from the surounding communities of New Brighton, Saint Anthony, Northeast Minneapolis and Fridley. So in the past when Hennepin County had a tornado warning or winds more then 70mph I could here St. Anthony's siren as if it were within the city limits of Columbia Heights. In most areas in Minnesota, The Sirens run for 1 minute cycle of alert, 1 minute of silence, 1 minute cycle of attack. I just got home from running around so I was only able to get the last 15 seconds or so of the first round. sorry! Sirens of Vinton, Iowa (NOTE: This is the corrected/updated version of my previous video. To the best of my knowledge, all of the information shown in this version is correct. Unfortunately, I was not able to fill in all of the "Unknown"s.) CORRECTION - Big "oopsie" on my part...siren #3 is actually located at the corner of -17th- Street & C Ave, not 16th. I'm not gonna bother with reuploading though, because anyone who tries to go see it at the corner of 16th will still see the siren in it's real location one block away. This is my first (And hopefully not my last) video dealing with tornado/civil defense sirens. This video deals with the sirens located in my hometown of Vinton, Iowa. At the time I made this video (Jan 17, 2008), I was VERY new to the hobby of siren spotting, so please forgive any lack of knowledge or incorrect information on my part. Any information I do not know is labeled "Unknown". I welcome any comments correcting any errors or filling in any gaps in my knowledge. Vinton is a moderately small town with a population of just over 5,100. Four sirens serve the town; one electromechanical, three electronic. Siren #1 is the oldest siren in town, currently located beside city hall. I do not know when it was installed, but I do know it was originally two blocks south of its current position (It was moved in 2000). It is a Federal Signal model STH-10, and is used for tornado warnings and fire calls. It used to be tested every Saturday at noon, but I have reason to believe it is no longer tested weekly anymore (The last several times I have been in town on a Saturday, it sat silent all day). However, it IS operated for the yearly statewide tornado drill, and otherwise is operated fairly regularly (Average of once a week) for fire calls. Sirens #2-4 are all the same model, Whelen WPS2807. All three were installed at the same time, which was approximately 2000. Before the Whelens were installed, there used to be two old mechanical sirens located in the same general locations as siren #2 and siren #3 (I do not recall an old siren being in the area of siren #4). Based on their appearance as I remember them, I believe the old sirens may have both been Federal Model 2. Alas, I have no pictures of them, nor do I know anyone else who does. All three Whelens are tested weekly (Every Saturday at noon), monthly (Every first Wednesday at about 9AM) and yearly (For the statewide tornado drill). Why the STH-10 isn't tested along with them during the weekly and monthly tests, I do not know. The green triangle on the map is a bonus of sorts, shown at the end of the video. It's not a siren, but it's almost as loud as one. It is an air/steam whistle mounted on top of the town's power plant. It's got a deep, rich tone that dominates downtown. I really hope to record it someday, it's one of those kinds of sounds that tells you when you're home. Anyway, I know absolutely nothing about it, other than the fact that it is sounded Monday-Friday at 7AM, noon, 1PM and 5PM. If I had to guess, I'd say it's a remnant from Vinton's long-gone days as a factory town. As mentioned in the video, I hope someday to capture video of all of these sirens (Plus the whistle) being sounded. All I need before I do that though is a good pair of noise-blocking muffs. Matteson, IL Thunderbolt 1000T (Alert & Attack) Well, here it is! I finally got my 1st video of the Thunderbolt 1000T tornado siren after waiting 2 months to get it! This time, it went off at exactly 10:00 AM like it's supposed to during the monthly tests. It runs in Alert mode first, then Attack mode. Man, I was very surprised that it went off because it was supposed to rain during the afternoon. Anyways, enjoy.
