San Francisco -- Exploring Coit Tower and Fisherman's Wharf After our very informative, entertaining and filling North Beach culinary tour on February 22, 2008, we proceeded up a very steep section of Filbert Street to reach the top of Telegraph Hill. In the mid 1800s a semaphore or signaling tower was located here that would announce the arrival of ships to local financiers, merchants and speculators. This signaling system was later replaced with an electrical telegraph in 1862. The 360 degree view from atop Telegraph Hill is amazing, we could see the downtown financial district with the Transamerica Pyramid, the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, the northern waterfront with Alcatraz and the Marine Headlands in the background, the Golden Gate Bridge and the western half of the San Francisco peninsula, stretching out towards Golden Gate Park. The crowning jewel of Telegraph Hill is the Coit Tower, built in 1933 with donations from Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a well-known volunteer firefighter and unusual female character who lived from 1842 to 1929. The main floor of the Coit Tower holds a series of murals that adorn all sides of the building, featuring vignettes of Californian life in the 1930s. The famous murals were created in 1934 as part of the Public Works of Art Project, a federal employment program for local artists. The content of the murals is fascinating as they depict scenes from industry and business as well as street scenes and agricultural images. Anyone interested in the history of the 1930s will be fascinated by the depiction of society during the Great Depression. The views from the parking lot of the Coit Tower over San Francisco Bay are exquisite. After an extensive visit we headed down the hill, taking the hidden-away Filbert Steps on the eastern side of Telegraph Hill. These wooden staircases and walkways are embedded into a residential neighbourhood that is patched against the steep flanks of Telegraph Hill. Once arrived at the bottom we continued our way up to Pier 39, one of San Francisco's most popular tourist areas that features a variety of retail stores, attractions and eateries. Highlights of Pier 39 include the historic carousel, which was handcrafted in Italy and is the only carousel in the United States that features artistic renderings of its home city. On the west side of Pier 39 another attraction awaits: the famous sea lions that started congregating here in 1990, shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Initially there were only a few dozen sea lions. But over just a few months the population grew to more than 300, and today the sea lions are perennial favourites with locals and tourists alike. Fortress No Tower Of Power In '07 - March 26 Fortress Investment Group is likely feeling the pain of airing one's once-private information. Also, in an effort to avoid having to file for bankruptcy protection, Thornburg Mortgage has changed its bylaws so that an individual investor may purchase up to $300 million of stock. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs Asset Management reportedly has its eyes on London-based Trafalgar Asset Managers. Finally, before launching in India, art funds need first to register, according to the Securities and Exchange Board of India. Tags: EMII Institutional Investor |

Austria 2008 - Lookout Tower in Western Styria On my last full day (May 7, 2008) in my home region of Styria my brother and I decided to go on a country driving tour. We took the A2 Highway and continued west past the provincial capital of Graz to the region of Western Styria. Our first stop was Schloss Stainz, a former monastery of Augustine monks with a history dating back to the 13th century. We continued on to the district capital of Deutschlandsberg, where we visited the Castle of Lonsperch, located on a rocky promontory over the River Lassnitz and providing a perfect vantage point to overlook the rolling vineyards of Western Styria. This entire area was first settled through the Late Neolithic, and the castle was first mentioned in local records in the 12th century. Our driving tour continued through the gently rolling hills of the Styrian Wine Route whose southern portion hugs the Slovenian border. Kitzeck, a quaint local village, is one of the highest altitude winegrowing villages in all of Europe. I had a chance to climb the 6-story lookout tower called Kreuzbergwarte and got a perfect 360 degree of the picturesque countryside. We also stopped at the historic Castle of Seggau, a 12th century castle that has been turned into a spiffy seminar hotel. From here we drove to the historic border town of Bad Radkersburg, located on the River Mur which forms the boundary here between Austria and Slovenia. Bad Radkersburg is situated in an area of ancient volcanism, and abundant thermal springs have turned the area into a hotbed of spa tourism. The core of the town dates back to the 13th century and the town, being located in a border area, has long been surrounded by a protective wall and is one of the most picturesque cities in southeastern Austria. Montreal: On the Olympic Tower - overlooking the city Day two of our Eastern Canada bus tour started with an early morning wake-up call on August 9, 2008. For our 8 pm bus departure we did have enough time to go for a quick breakfast just steps from the Hotel Le Concorde in Quebec City where we had been staying. A quick stroll south on Rue Grande Allee Ouest, location of many restaurants and nightclubs, took us to a restaurant by the name of St. Hubert which featured an extensive breakfast buffet. Punctually at 8 am our bus drove us five minutes into the centre of Vieux Québec where we had about an hour and half to explore the old part of the city. I walked down into the old port area where historic limestone buildings house dozens of restaurants, boutiques and specialty shops. On Place de Paris I came across a TV shoot for the local weather station that featured the host of the show all dressed up in historic French attire, surrounded by a quartet of singers and several other extras, also sporting 17th century dresses. A walk on the waterfront allowed me to take in views across the St. Lawrence River as well as a glimpse back up to the majestic Chateau Frontenac. For $1.75 I took a ride in the funicular, which whisked me back up the hill to the Place dArmes within mere seconds. Shortly before 10 am it was time to leave for our next destination: Montreal. After a quick lunch in St. Hyacinthe, we reached our first destination, the Olympic Stadium, at around 2 pm. We took the cable car up the tallest inclined tower in the world from where we enjoyed a perfect 360 degree view of the City. Right next to the Olympic Stadium we had a chance to visit the former Olympic vecodrome which was converted into the Montreal Biodome in 1992, a nature museum that features replicas of four eco-systems: a tropical South American rain forest, the Laurentian Forest, the Saint Lawrence Marine Eco-system and a polar area featuring animals from the Arctic and Antarctic. The penguin feeding was particularly popular among the audience. At our next stop we were able to ...
