Checkin' On My Baby, Cadillac Dave & His Chicago Redhots Cadillac Dave sings Checkin' On My Baby from his CD of the same name along with His Chicago Redhots and Chico Banks. This is from a photo shoot I attempted in and outside of the Chicago House of Blues. I shot downtown hearing that Courtney Jones, a talented singer/songwriter/pianist from the left coast was turning up at the Back Porch. I experimented with a CJ Music demandit.com on her myspace and either it worked or she was headed here anyhow. Either way, I thought it'd be great to hear her live since I enjoyed her CDs and sure enough, it was. At any rate, some of my favorite shots from the shoot are at the end of this music vid of Courtney, the others she performed with and Cadillac who followed her. My main emphasis was photos but I brought my vidcam and left it running on my cam bag, not a tripod. I had the vidcam trained on Dave and the bass player cuz my son plays bass and I thought he'd love checkin' out some local Chicago Blues and maybe pick up on a bass run or riff or two. But, somewhere in here Chico Banks starts going to town enough that I figure I should drop my Canon and see if I could focus on his fab fretwork. Unfortunately, he was kinda tucked outta the way and I couldn't situate the vidcam to get a great iso on him no matter how hard I tried. Sorry about that as the picture momentarily wanders around the stage and crowd. Some B-roll footage would've been handy but, again, stills were my focus. The place was pretty packed, ppl shot up to the dance floor and got into it on a variety of songs and all the performers put on a great show. I enjoyed even more than the pork chops lol. There was some nutty guy that entertained the entertainers by crossing the stage with some fruity dance to the amusement of the bass player so I popped a quick rerun of him at the end of the vid. After the gig waiting for the valet and getting some shots of the joint well after midnight I ran into Chico Banks. In addition to being seriously skilled on his ax he was seriously friendly and he was interesting to talk to. It was just me waiting and him hanging out on a bench. He talked about his music, website, learning guitar (I was curious cuz I play) and he told me that the band rung him up and he just popped in unrehearsed for this gig. My view of the performance shot up even higher hearing this since practice makes perfect and no practices makes something a lot different than what I caught on tape here usually. If you're up for a good time taking in some live Chicago entertainment I'd be googling HOB, Cadillac Dave and Chico Banks if I were you cuz all would be worth checking out. P.S. I'm not sure I'd recommend strolling around Chicago near Marina City and the HOB with a tripod and an expensive collection of cameras and lenses. Around 2 a.m. or something I ran into what may be one of the most sophisticated panhandlers alive. His story was top-tier and involved and I ended up giving him a ten-spot considering A) the alternatives and B) the involved and complex nature of his ruse. I spent $40 at the theater recently and it wasn't nearly as entertaining. P.P.S. My favorite Courtney shot wound up featured on her website, myspace and promotional materials and might be one of the best of her random and professional shots IMHO lol. I went there trying to get one CD-worthy and I was pleased.
