Deadly Virus Spreads in China ANCHOR: And the number of deaths from a severe strain of hand, foot and mouth disease are continuing to rise in China. Chinese state media has reported 34 deaths and the number of infected individuals has jumped to 25,000. Here's more. STORY: The latest deaths occurred in the hardest-hit area of central Anhui Province. 22 children have already died of the disease here and over a hundred patients remain in critical condition. Hand, foot and mouth is a common illness among children, but the current outbreak is linked with Enterovirus 71 (EV71). This increases the severity of the disease resulting in high fever, paralysis and meningitis. CCP authorities delayed announcing the outbreak until late April, triggering memories of the deadly SARS epidemic of 2003. CCP officials have now issued a nationwide alert. Beijing has had 1,500 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease this year. Most turn up in children under five and more than half of the cases were found in kindergartens. All this has people like Beijing resident Du Shaochi worried. [Du Shaochi, Beijing Resident]: "We don't go to crowded places. The kindergarten has told us not to bring her to crowded places." Health experts say the number of cases could rise as the peak season for hand, foot and mouth is June and July. We will bring you the latest on this breaking story when more information becomes available. Tags: ntd virus china death disease anhui province enterovirus 71 fever CCP |

China Revokes Gold Medalist's Visa SportsChina Revokes Gold Medalist's VisaChina Revokes Gold Medalist's VisaThe Associated PressFormer Olympic speedskater Joey Cheek had his visa revoked by Chinese authorities Wednesday, hours before he was set to travel to Beijing to promote his effort urging China to help make peace in the war-torn Darfur section of Sudan. (Aug. 6)Former Olympic champion Joey Cheek says he's been told he's no longer welcome at the upcoming Beijing games.SOT CheekA little bit after the close of business hours I got a call from the Chinese consulate here in Washington and they basically told me the visa they had given me a month earlier was revoked and no longer valid.Cheek won gold and silver medals in speed skating in 2006 and now heads a group of athletes that's urging China to help stop the genocide in the Darfur section of Sudan. Some 200 thousand people have been killed in the ethnic clashes there and another two and a half million have been displaced by the fighting.China has strong ties with the Sudanese government and Cheek says while he wasn't given an explanation as to why he's being barred he's sure his role as president of Team Darfur is what's keeping him out.SOT CheekI've been a pretty vocal critic the international community has played in not doing more to protect the citizens of Darfur and I think China has a role as Sudan's largest trading partner.Cheek says he wasn't planning any protests during his visit and had urged Olympians who have signed on to his site not to do anything that would put them at risk. However he says he believes China is breaking the spirit of the games by trying to silence him.SOT CheekIt seems like it about more than sports when it's convenient and only about sports when it's convenient. And I find that frustrating. If you're going to set an ideal you should live up to it.Olympic officials are calling the decision to keep Cheek away unfortunate and the White House says it will log a protest. ___ ___, The Associated Press. 2008 5.12 China earth quake- You can make a difference! China were hit by a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on May 12, 2008. Tens of thousands of people have died so far, while still, many survivors remain trapped in rubble from collapsed buildings, awaiting rescue. The majorities of these people are poor and have been poor for all of their lives. Now they lost their homes and are homeless. While we are lamenting for those who have died, we know that those who survived will still carry on. Food, medicine, temporary shelters...are just a few examples of help that this region desperately needs, to help save more lives, rebuild homes and cure the hearts burned in this sad disaster. We need to show them that love still exists on this earth and encourage them to carry on. Your kind help is highly appreciated! http://www.mercycorps.org/ http://www.ctef.org/EarthquakeRelief.asp http://www.oxfam.org.hk/public/main https://www.redcross.org.hk/donation/user_donation.asp http://www.RedCross.org http://www.worldvision.org/ http://tsinghuafoundation.org/earthquake08/index.html When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears, When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears, I will hold your hand through all of these, and let you know that you are NOT alone! Sunshine Daydream - China Cat Sunflower prt. 1 Sunshine Daydream is an unreleased movie shot at the Grateful Dead's 1972 Veneta, Oregon concert to benefit the Springfield Creamery in nearby Springfield, Oregon. The film is sometimes shown at small film festivals, and bootleg recordings of it have circulated on VHS and DVD and as digital downloads. The concert, recorded on August 27, 1972, was filmed using four 16 mm cameras, in the woods of the Oregon Coast Range foothills, on the grounds of the Oregon Country Fair. Originally even more cameras had been planned, under an ambitious scheme: "The plot was to develop a signature visual style of representing the band: a camera for each of the 16 channels (at least!) emphasizing the visual kinetics of the music making itself as well as the enormous open communication within the band." Ken Kesey and old cohort Ken Babbs emceed the concert. The Dead played all afternoon and into the dark after an opening set by the New Riders of the Purple Sage. The title of the film is taken from the coda section of the Dead song "Sugar Magnolia". Tags: Grateful Dead Jerry Garcia Bob Weir Phil Lesh China Cat Sunflower Veneta Oregon Sunshine Daydream |

Waiting for Micro Miracles - China July 1998 With the help of a micro-credit finance scheme China set itself the target of eliminating rural poverty by the year 2000. It is estimated that 60 million people living in rural and remote areas od China eke out a subsistence existence on a meagre $90 a year. How best to improve their lot though is a matter for debate. AusAid battle it out with the Government. They offer loans of only $80 - an amount they believe will encourage constructive investment in the future. Perhaps a tractor or some fertiliser to increase production. The regional government is in a hurry though and are dishing-out loans of $400 with lower interest and longer pay back time. Not surprisingly these loans are a big hit, it's a chance to buy a few luxuries too. Yet no-one's celebrating so far in Banyalong. With still no cash economy to speak of and in a region renowned for it's poor soil and harsh frosts, the capital injection is not reaping sustainable rewards quite yet. Many have simply immersed themselves in loans they cannot pay back. While the micro-credit advocates claim their scheme is the path to sustainable wealth, others denounce it as a quick fix. Will this be Banyalong's salvation or ruin? Tags: Micro Credit finance loans schemes poverty China interest investment rural Journeyman Pictures |

Eighteen hundred students vie for spots in Beijing's top two universities. Last year only 59 made it. Studying seven days a week, the students' lives are regimented almost every minute of the day as they prepare for the end-of-year exam that can determine their fate.
