California Colloquium on Water - Mike Taugher California Colloquium on Water Mike Taugher, Environmental Reporter, Contra Costa Times "When the Environment and Politics Collide: Recent Developments in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta" In early 2005, scientists noticed that fish populations in the Delta were mysteriously collapsing. It was the latest and loudest environmental alarm for what is perhaps the most important source of water in a state that this utterly dependent on being able to move water around. The ecological crisis in the Delta was also a sign that the policies in place to protect the Delta and California's water supply were failing. Walter Brueggemann visit: Environment, Bible, Sulfide Mine Environmental crisis and religion: Proposed sulfide mine, other northern Michigan environment issues among topics to be addressed by Biblical scholar/author Walter Brueggemann Noted biblical scholar and author Walter Brueggemann will hold free public talks in the Marquette area during early October on the "connection of Bible and environmental crisis" including Upper Peninsula issues like a proposed sulfide mine. Dr. Breuggemann said "my presentation will consider the way in which the Bible empowers and calls us to care about our environment ... The connection of Bible and environmental crisis is an invitation to a new, responsible sanity - after too much economic insanity." Earth Keeper volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson previews Dr. Brueggemann's visit to northern Michigan: Time: 7:20 (Marquette) - Noted biblical scholar and author Walter Brueggemann will hold free public talks in the Marquette area during early October on the "connection of Bible and environmental crisis" including Upper Peninsula issues like a proposed sulfide mine. "My presentation will consider the way in which the Bible empowers and calls us to care about our environment," Dr. Brueggemann said. "The connection of Bible and environmental crisis is an invitation to a new, responsible sanity - after too much economic insanity." Dr. Brueggemann will speak and lead workshops in the Marquette area on October 8 - 9, 2007. All of Brueggemann's appearances will be followed by a chance for public questions and comments. Brueggemann will touch on Upper Peninsula environmental issues like the proposed sulfide mine in Marquette County. "Among those issues are mining that wrecks the land, deforestation and all the temptations to exploit our God-given resources," Brueggemann said. "My work will be to show the biblical texts that matter - those texts draw very close to immediate issues of abuse." Rev. Warren Geier, pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, said Brueggemann has the "unique ability to speak to general audiences and to bring out the truth of Biblical texts as they relate to our contemporary religious, cultural, political and economic situation." "Using the Bible he will challenge the assumptions and certainties of both conservatives and liberals - issues like sulfide mining are not just about economics versus care of the environment," said Geier. "For people of faith there is a theological component to environmental issues and Dr. Brueggemann will help all of us to understand it." Brueggemann will hold a free public lecture at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8 at the University Center at Northern Michigan University on "Theology of Creation and the Environmental Crisis." A preaching workshop for clergy and lay church workers led by Dr. Brueggemann will be held on from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday Oct. 9 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette. The cost is $20 with lunch included and a reservation is required. The discussion will focus on "Biblical Preaching in the Shadow of the Empire." Brueggemann will hold a free public talk at 7 p.m. on Oct. 9 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming entitled "Journey to the Common Good: Reading the Bible Towards God's Future" which will address issues concerning how we interpret scripture. The events are co-sponsored by Lutheran Campus Ministry and the departments of Philosophy and English at NMU, the Northern Great Lakes Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. Israeli Water Technology Exhibition Global water shortage and environmental pollution is a growing problem. This prompts local authorities and commercial companies to search for different solutions. An exhibition in Israel had to offer just that. Here's more from our Israeli correspondent. Israel, having suffered water shortage problems since its early days, is a pioneer and leader in developing and implementing water and environmental technologies. The International Water Technologies and Environmental Control Exhibition attracted thousands of local visitors as well as delegations from about 80 countries, including 35 ministers and vice-ministers. The exhibition presented methods for improving the quality of the environment such as reducing environmental nuisances and using alternative energy sources. [Anat Halgoa, Vice-President GES Israel]: "We are in the business of energy with waste water plant for animal manure to treat the waste in order to produce bio-gas and from the bio-gas we reproduce green electricity. It is again one of the big projects in the world using aerobic technology." The trend today is to switch to using non-polluting energy sources like solar energy. [Dr. Alexios Paiziz, Mechanical Engineer, SOL/Chromagen]: "In any building 80% of the energy consumption is given for heating and cooling goals. So if one tries to minimize this consumption by setting passing energy means and by doing clever mechanical engineer design then you save a lot of energy. This building covers all the heating and cooling goals by alternative energies plus covers a part of the electrical goals through photo voltage. So we achieved about 95% energy saving compared to a domestic application or even an office commercial application." The exhibition also presented computerized drip irrigation systems and technologies for recycling sewage water for economical usage of water in dry areas. Bush At War With Environment - Richard Nixon's EPA Head Bush has declared war on the environment - says Richard Nixon's former head of the Environmental Protection Agency, Russel Train. "We're at war in Iraq. They tell us we're at war against terrorism. I'd say that George W. Bush has declared war on the environment. And I think that people ought to stand up and be counted in opposition to that. The first National Park, Yellowstone, was created in 1872. Now that was a Republican year, right after the Civil War. General Grant, then the president, was the person you have to give credit to for Yellowstone. You can go back to Teddy Roosevelt and say he Roosevelt was a great conservationist. He created our National Forest and our national wildlife refuges and he took a strong interest in conservation. You get to Richard Nixon and you get a fantastic blooming of environmental interest and initiatives on the part of the administration. The EPA, the Environmental Protection Agency, was a creature of Richard Nixon. The Clean Air Act of 1972, the Clean Air Act of 1970, ocean dumping controls, clean drinking water, the Noise Control Act, the Toxic Substances Control Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, you name it. So, during the Nixon administration and the Ford administration we accomplished a great deal. I was never officially part of the administration of George H.W. Bush -- Bush the First. We were good personal friends and our families were friends. He asked me for advice on the environment; he asked me to explain the environment to him, although that wasn't exactly an easy thing to do in a short while, but we sat down and talked in Florida for an hour or so. He really wanted to know. He entered the presidency with the intention of being a good environmental president. He sponsored the Clean Air Act amendments of 1990, and that's the law under which we live today. He had a very good environmental record, and his heart was very much in the right place on the issue. I feel George W.'s heart is in the wrong place on this issue. Calling something the Clean Air Act, the Healthy Forest Act when what you're really doing is opening up the forest to logging. It's almost an ideological antagonism. And there's no understanding, I feel, of the importance of this issue. It's addressed from the standpoint of, "What is such-and-such a regulation going to do to a particular industry that is a pretty good contributor to our campaign cause. And I think that's what's motivated its approach to environmental matters. There has been a tendency on the part of this administration, this White House, to -- some call it -- distort science. And if they don't like the science, they take out that particular finding. As I understand it, the EPA did do a study -- at least a preliminary study, in New York, which showed some very troublesome, hazardous air pollutant problems. And they were told by -- I don't know whether the White House or the Council on Environmental Quality -- to change those results. I think this administration is not a conservative administration. I think it's a radical administration. It represents a radical rollback of environmental policy going back to a period many, many years ago. It's backward." Sakhalin: Extraction or Extinction - Russia Nov 2006 Russia claims its decision to stop Shell building the world's biggest oil and gas development was motivated by environmental concerns. So why will it let work resume if Shell pays more money? The impoverished islands of Sakhalin are noteworthy for two reasons. Their coastal waters are the only feeding ground for the critically endangered Western Grey Whale. And it's here that the world's largest integrated oil and gas facility is being built. This development is increasingly unpopular in Russia. As Julian Lee from the Centre for Global Energy Studies explains; "It's the only major project in Russia that has no Russian company involvement." Many believe the Kremlin is using environmental concerns to wrest back control of the Sakhalin development. Tags: Sakhalin Oil Gas Kremlin grey whale reserves shell Journeyman Pictures |
