Authors@Google: J. Maarten Troost Maarten Troost visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "Lost on Planet China: The Strange and True Story of One Man's Attempt to Understand the World's Most Mystifying Nation, or How He Became Comfortable Eating Live Squid." This event took place on July 16, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series. Lost on Planet China finds Troost dodging deadly drivers in Shanghai; eating Yak in Tibet; deciphering restaurant menus (offering local favorites such as Cattle Penis with Garlic); visiting with Chairman Mao (still dead, very orange); and hiking (with 80,000 other people) up Tai Shan, China's most revered mountain. But in addition to his trademark gonzo adventures, the book also delivers a telling look at a vast and complex country on the brink of transformation that will soon shape the way we all work, live, and think. As Troost shows, while we may be familiar with Yao Ming or dim sum or the cheap, plastic products that line the shelves of every store, the real China remains a world—indeed, a planet--unto itself. Maarten Troost brings China to life as you've never seen it before, and his insightful, rip-roaringly funny narrative proves that once again he is one of the most entertaining and insightful armchair travel companions around. J. MAARTEN TROOST is the author of Getting Stoned with Savages and The Sex Lives of Cannibals. His essays have appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, the Washington Post, and the Prague Post. He spent two years in Kiribati in the Equatorial Pacific and upon his return was hired as a consultant by the World Bank. After several years in Fiji and Vanuatu, he recently relocated to the U.S. and now lives with his wife and two sons in California. Google Developers Day US -Google and the Geoweb "Google and the Geoweb Michael T. Jones Do you want to reach the largest possible audience, in the most innovative ways, with your geospatial data? If so, then KML is the answer. KML is a file format used to display geographic data in a geo-browser, such as Google Earth, Google Maps, and Google Maps for mobile. We'll give you a tour of what is possible in KML and show you how to create your own custom map layers. We'll also talk about how you can help Google to index your geospatial content (KML, GeoRSS and more) so that we can send more search traffic your way. Speaker Bio: Bent joined Google in January 2006 and is a software engineer working on KML and KML tools. Previous to Google Bent worked at Opera Software and Silicon Graphics. Lior is the Product Manager for geo search in Google, where he is trying to help the world around us get mapped using the power of the masses. Before joining Google, Lior co-founded a medical device and a search startup, and served in various managerial positions in the Israeli Intelligence, where he worked on GIS and search problems. Lior holds an MBA from Stanford and BSc and MS from the Technion - the Israeli institute for technology. Michael Jones is Chief Technology Officer of the Google Earth service for distributed geospatial visualization to users worldwide. Authors@Google: Steve LeVine Steve LeVine visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "Putin's Labyrinth: Spies, Murder, and the Dark Heart of the New Russia." This event took place on July 15, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series. Drawing on new interviews with eyewitnesses and the families of victims, LeVine documents the bloodshed that has stained Putin's two terms as president. Putin's Labyrinth is more than an immensely readable exposé. It is highly personal, with the flavor of a memoir. It is a thoughtful book that examines the perplexing question of how Russians manage to negotiate their way around the ever-present danger of violence. It calculates the emotional toll that this lethal maze is exacting on ordinary people, even as they enjoy a dramatically heightened standard of living. Most ominously, it assesses the reopening of hostilities with the West, and the forces that are driving this major new confrontation. Steve LeVine is the author of The Oil and the Glory: The Pursuit of Empire and Fortune on the Caspian Sea. He is the chief foreign affairs writer for BusinessWeek and is based in Washington, D.C. He was a foreign correspondent for eighteen years, posted in the Soviet Union, Pakistan, and the Philippines, reporting for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Newsweek, Financial Times, and other publications. The nice man at the balloon store calculated the helium required by doing some mathematical equations that used Pi and Avagadro's number I think. Authors@Google: Mital Shah and Mark Leibowitz Mitah Shah and Mark Leibowitz visit Google's headquarters in Mountain View, CA, to discuss the project "Well Souled". This event took place July 29, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series. For more info on Well Souled, visit http://www.wellsouled.com/frameset.html At the heart of Well Souled is the belief that lasting impressions are those that come naturally through the people you meet on your travels and how they connect you to the context, sharing their perspectives on the attitudes, sounds, colors, and textures that surround you. This is how travel becomes emotional -- soulful. Well Souled translates this kind of cultural immersion into lifestyle products that celebrate the sensory experience of travel. In each country, Well Souled has identified a primary social initiative and will join forces with an established non-profit partner to implement its vision with integrity and transparency. First stop: South Africa. Here, township style pulses to kwaito beats and "the mountain" is covered by a tablecloth of clouds. Here, you find people living on laughter, luxury alongside aspiration, and children, orphaned by AIDS, embracing the future. In South Africa, Well Souled will partner with leaders in HIV/AIDS research, prevention, and treatment to help these children do so. Google Developer Day Sydney - Lars Rasmussen Open Source, Google APIs, Google Web Toolkit Presented by Lars Rasmussen Why Google supports and uses open source, why it is good for us, and why you should use it too. Followed by an overview of Google's extensive collection of APIs for use by third party developers including the Google Maps API, the Google AJAX Search API, the Google Gadgets API and much more. This session will then explore the Google Web Toolkit (GWT), a Java-centric framework for creating AJAX applications. GWT cross-compiles Java source into JavaScript, allowing Java developers to use their existing Java skills and tools to easily create AJAX applications with virtually no learning curve. Lars will contrast using the toolkit with his experience 'hand-rolling' the AJAX of Google Maps, and if time allows, demonstrate building a simple application with GWT. Lars Eilstrup Rasmussen is a member of Google's technical staff and a lead engineer of the team that created Google Maps. He currently works out of Google's young but growing Sydney engineering office and is actively working to expand Google's engineering presence in Australia. Lars holds a Ph.D. in theoretical computer science from the University of California at Berkeley, which nominated his thesis on approximate counting for the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award. In early 2003, Lars co-founded with his brother Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen a mapping-related startup, Where 2 Technologies, which was acquired by Google in October of 2004.
