Japan asks: anybody out there? Is there life in outer space? Some of Japan's biggest observatories are teaming up in a fresh quest to find out. Although Japanese astronomers admit the odds are low. [Shinya Narusawa, Nish-Harima Astronomical Observatory]: "I think we have a fair chance of finding extraterrestrial civilization, but when it comes to probability, I have to admit that it is not very high. We will only be conducting this joint research for one week. And one week is just a blink of an eye compared to five million years since the human race evolved into what it is now. However, I think it is at least worth a try and we have to do this because when nothing is ventured, nothing is gained." The astronomical teams will spread across the country, using powerful telescopes and other equipment to try and detect any "unnatural" activity. The search for aliens and UFOs is something that fascinates many in Japan. This project, which gets underway in September, aims to remove any doubt by having several astronomers filming one planet over a number of nights. "Gliese 880," a planet in the Libra constellation, is most likely to go under the telescope. It's been singled out because it is orbiting around its sun's habitable zone—the place likely to have the best conditions for sustaining life like we have on Earth. Even though experts are realistic about the chances of finding another civilization, they say with all the terrible things going on in our world they hope the project will give people a chance to re-examine their lives. Market Report - Japan, Oz Shares Lower ZHANG: Japanese and Australian shares edged lower Thursday. Banks were the main movers in both bourses. Nearly all financial markets in the region, except for Tokyo and Sydney, were closed for a Labor Day holiday. The Nikkei declined with Mitsubishi UFJ lower, and other banks falling as well. Japanese brewer Kirin Holdings fell after a 46 percent drop in quarterly profit, which came despite a double-digit rise in sales. In Australia, the share benchmark declined amid some banking share weakness. But Westpac, Australia's No. 4 lender, edged up after a 10 percent rise in first-half core profit. And in the U.S., the Federal Reserve, as anticipated, cut the federal funds rate by another 25 basis points yesterday, bringing it down to just 2 percent. The federal funds rate is the interest rate at which banks loan to each other. The Fed is hoping that cheaper credit will boost the flailing economy by encouraging businesses to borrow more money for growth, and helping U.S. homeowners refinance their mortgages at lower interest rates. The goal at this point, say economists, is to keep the U.S. economic downturn from being too severe. But worries about inflation also persist, and the Fed has signaled that this will be the last rate cut for awhile, as long as the markets remain steady. The impact of the Fed's cut on Asian markets may not be fully seen until next week, after several holidays from now through Monday are keeping various Asian markets closed. Logriding Race in Japan Logriders risk their lives in a rare and dangerous festival in Japan. It's log-riding Japanese style, which makes it far more exciting and a little bit dangerous. The race involves five to six men tumbling over a mountain top on a ten tonne log that comes crashing down a steep slope with no guarantees if the rider will still be on he log at the end of the road. Logriding in Suwa city, Nagano prefecture is believed to be a sacred ritual which goes back over a thousand years. It is common for a log-rider to fall and be crushed to death by an oncoming juggernaut during the race-- injuries are common and almost inevitable.
