Albin Kurti fjalimi ne demostrat History of the Movement for Self-Determination in Kosova (Lëvizja VETËVENDOSJE!) Lëvizja VETËVENDOSJE! is a community of people that refuse to submit, and intend to achieve and realize self-determination for the people of Kosova. The origin of V is in the activities and many actions of KAN (Kosova Action Network) that had as its goal the creation of active citizens in Kosova, dedicated to the promotion of universal values in the field of human rights and freedoms, equality and social justice. Founded in 1997, by a group of international activists led by American writer Alice Mead, now Alice W. James, KAN at the start supported citizens initiatives against the occupation and dictatorship of Serbia in Kosova, such as the case of support for the Independent Union of Students of the University of Prishtina (UPSUP) and their non-violent protest for the release of their buildings and spaces in the university. It continued with documentation of crimes during the war, and reached its culmination during the years 1999 and 2000 with the A-PAL (Albanian Prisoner Advocacy list) campaign for the release of war hostages. In July of 2003, it was decided that KAN should be based inside of Kosova and to create a network here. Since that time, with the considerable participation of activists from all over Kosova, KAN organized a series of activities in order to strengthen individuals all over Kosova, and to create a dynamic and representative society. KAN organized a petition in support of the clarification of the fate of missing persons in Kosova, gathering 236,311 signatures; then, the civil disobedience of the families of the missing (refusal to pay taxes and for public services); we also blocked the road and cross-roads; we placed photographs of the missing on the railings at the government and assembly building of Kosova; then, we published on a sheet -- which the police stole every time -- accusations against the people responsible for murders and massacres in Krushë e Vogël, Gjakova and Reçak. All this was done in cooperation with the families of the missing. On 10th June 2004, with whistles, music and red cards, we protested against Resolution 1244 and precisely on its 5th anniversary, over 1,000 protestors around the UNMIK building pronounced themselves Citizens and activists. (We in Kosova are considered only residents, a status that only refugees enjoy). They read a Citizen's Declaration and promised to struggle against the anti-democratic regime of UNMIK. (This protest represents the conceptual genesis of what is today known as the Movement for Self-Determination.) Later it continued with a tour through the towns of Kosova projecting slides with slogans against the undemocratic regime of UNMIK, on the government and public walls. Later, two times activists of KAN surrounded UNMIK with a yellow tape on which was written 'Crime Scene -- Do Not Pass' and another time, on 13th February 2005 we threw rotten eggs at the President of Serbia, Boris Tadiq. Vuk Drashkoviq, then Foreign Minister of the Union of Serbia and Montenegro was also greeted with rotten eggs during his visit to Prishtina on 27th June 2005. Other activities included opposition to the process of decentralization in Kosova, on which occasion in Gjilan, Dardana, Mitrovica (the most endangered areas) and in Prishtina, we burnt wooden letters of the word 'decentralization' because this project, prior to the achievement of statehood and independence of Kosova, leads to the partition and fragmentation of Kosova. On 12th June 2005, on the walls around the headquarters of UNMIK the slogan 'No Negotiations -- Self-Determination' was written, marking the final transformation of KAN into LËVIZJA VETËVENDOSJE! The action of writing slogans continued in almost all the towns of Kosova, during which time the Kosova Police Service in cooperation with the International Police arrested approximately 130 activists of LËVIZJA VETËVENDOSJE!, some of whom were sentenced to prison or fined. Today, LËVIZJA VETËVENDOSJE! has extended its work in many centers and residential areas of Kosova, it has hundreds of activists, thousands of supporters, all of whom are striving to mobilize and organize the people of Kosova in a mission to achieve and realize the right for self-determination. With maximum determination and commitment. Until self-determination for the people of Kosova. www.vetevendosje.org Tags: Albin Kurti vetevendosje Jonegociata stupcat uck bbc Shqiperia Kosova Luan Albania Prishtina UNMIK SHPK crimes |
