Nystrand breaks world record a second time Sweden's Stefan Nystrand completed a clean race in the men's 50 free to set a record he previously thought he owned after an earlier stop in the series. After taking down the 100 free world record yesterday, Nystrand did not mess around in the splash-and-dash as he nipped Roland Schoeman's standard with a 20.93. Earlier in the World Cup, Nystrand touched well ahead of the world record of 20.98 set by Schoeman of South Africa. Nystrand, however, was disqualified due to a problem with his start. Record Breaking Art Auction Kean Wong: A portrait by a British artist went for a whopping $33.6 million at Christie's in New York, shattering the previous record by $10 million set last November. Lucien Freud's portrait of a nude woman sleeping on a sofa has shot into the record books after selling for the highest figure ever paid for a painting by a living artist. The British artist's 'Benefits Supervisor Sleeping' woke the art world with a start as it sold for more than 33.6 million dollars. The price tag was ten million dollars ahead of the previous record set only last November. It was one of eight records smashed at Christie's in New York on Tuesday. The auction offered less than 60 lots which Christie's officials say was purposely low. [Brett Gorvy, Christie's Art Specialist]: "We cut down the number of works within the sale. We also concentrated more and more on quality and went out into the market looking for works, very pro-actively looking for great material." The sale, driven predominantly by American buyers, defied erratic financial markets to bring in a total of 350 million dollars. Mark Rothko's No. 15 went for over 50 million, way above its pre-sale estimate. Andy Warhol's Double Marlon sold for more than 32 million. Almost all the lots on offer found buyers despite fears by some auction officials that the spring sales could mark the start of a market downturn. French modern art sets auction record at Christie's Anna Chan: Christie's art auction on Tuesday has proved that the art world is not short of cash. In New York works from French impressionists Monet and Rodin were sold at record prices. Let's take a look at all the action. The art world can take heart. A Monet and a Rodin pulled in record prices at a Christie's auction Tuesday, putting aside fears for now that the global credit crunch would crush art prices. The auction of Impressionist and Modern art reaped 277 million dollars. The highlight: Monet's painting of this railroad bridge from his early period. "Le Pont du chemin de fer a Argenteuil" sold for $41.5 million, topping the previous high for a Monet by nearly $5 million. Christie's auctioneer Christopher Burge says this is the finest of the four bridge paintings done by the impressionist master. [Christopher Burge, Christie's Auctioneer]: "It's very rare to get an 1870s Monet of this quality on the market and the result proved that tonight." The hammer shattered records for Giacometti's bronze sculpture of a standing woman. It pulled in 27 million, nine million more than the previous record. And this Rodin sculpture called "Eve" went for nearly 19 million, more than double the previous record. [Christopher Burge, Christie's Auctioneer]: "Generally speaking, for the very best things, the market was still red hot and top prices were more than we expected." Top prices, but cheaper in the eyes of many foreigners. Aided by the weak dollar, Europeans accounted for more than half of the purchases last night. Everest Mountaineer Beats His Record WONG: A Nepali sherpa climbed the world's highest peak for the 18th time on Thursday, beating his own record set last year. STORY: 48 year old Apa Sherpa reached the 8,850-meter summit of Mount Everest again on Thursday. Though Apa declared six years ago that he will retire from mountaineering to be with family, he has still been scaling Everest every year, recently to support civic causes.[Apa Sherpa, Mountaineer]:"There is only one Everest in the world, we must think of how we can best protect it by keeping it clean. "Apa's ascent last Thursday was sponsored by the Asian Trekking Agency and the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). The aim is to promote eco-tourism and urge climbers to clean up their waste not only in the base camp but also on the increasingly polluted mountain top. He also wants to educate the locals about the mountain. [Apa Sherpa, Mountaineer]:"They don't know what is global warming, or how the glacier lake bursts out. Even today the people of our remote areas construct hotels just beside the streams without knowing its consequences. They invest their savings without knowing when the glacier lake might burst. "Apa was born in the same village as Tenzing Norgay, and used to work as a porter on climbing expeditions. He climbed Everest for the first time in 1990 and has done so every year since then, except in 1996 when harsh weather conditions killed 15 mountaineers including his mentor.
