2010 Jaguar XF-R Exclusive Spy Video FOR MORE ABOUT THE JAGUAR XF-R: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=130969 After seeing prototypes running around England, we figured it was only a matter of time before we would catch up with the 2010 Jaguar XF-R in Death Valley. Running solo in a new shade of silver, this high-performance version of the standard XF sedan is designed to give Jaguar a true super sedan to compete with the likes of the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. This latest XF-R prototype wears many of the same upgrades as the earlier test mules. The deeper airdam up front is the most obvious upgrade, as the air intakes appear slightly larger than those on the standard model. It also looks like a pair of hood intakes have been added as well. There are new, more aggressive rocker-sill extensions as well, although the wheels appear to be the same set of optional 20-inch items available for the standard XF. In back, a set of quad tailpipes is another obvious tip-off to this XF's high-performance engine hardware. So what's under the hood? All indications point toward a new supercharged 5.0-liter V8. It's an all-new engine that will filter down to the entire Jaguar lineup in one form or another, not to mention Land Rover's upcoming SUVs. In the XF-R, it will likely produce around 500 horsepower, a number that will put it right in line with the rest of the luxury super-sedan crowd. 2010 Porsche Panamera Exclusive Spy Video DOES PORSCHE GET IT RIGHT WITH THE PANAMERA? FIND OUT AT: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=130326?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..3.* Our spy shooters have caught the 2010 Porsche Panamera once again, this time during some hot-weather testing in Death Valley, California. And once again, the upcoming four-door Porsche has left us scratching our heads over its design. Incorporating elements from both the 911 and the Cayenne, the Panamera looks like it's having a hard time pulling off the whole "four-door coupe" idea. The high window line makes it look bulky in profile, while the massive hatchback window does little to slim down the big rear end. We'll assume for now that the car will look far more elegant when all the tape comes off, but for now the Panamera looks like it could take over from the Cayenne as the least attractive Porsche in the Stuttgart company's lineup. Three direct-injection gasoline engines are expected to be offered from the start of North American sales, which now look likely to begin in late 2009. At the bottom end of the scale will be a 300-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 sourced from Volkswagen. Positioned above that will be the Panamera S, with a Porsche-developed 4.8-liter V8 that makes 405 hp. Rounding out the lineup will be the Panamera Turbo, challenging the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG with a turbocharged 520-hp 4.8-liter V8. Porsche has also confirmed it will add a gasoline-electric hybrid version of the Panamera to its lineup in 2010. It is expected to receive an adapted version of the full parallel-hybrid system that Porsche is developing in cooperation with Volkswagen for the second-generation Cayenne and Touareg. Average fuel economy, Porsche claims, will top 25 mpg. The entry-level V6 is expected to be sold exclusively in rear-wheel-drive guise. The V8-powered models are set to have an adapted version of the Cayenne's Haldex-style four-wheel-drive system with multiplate clutch. Among the gearbox choices will be a standard six-speed manual and an optional six-speed automatic. Prices in Europe are expected to start at around $125,000 for the Panamera V6, ranging up to $195,000 for the Panamera Turbo. 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid Spy Video CHECK OUT THE X6 HYBRID SPY ARTICLE: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=129486?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..4.* First shown as a concept at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, the 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid is now headed for production. Far from a fuel-sipping economy car, this gasoline-electric hybrid is designed to take the edge off fuel costs without giving up much in the way of SUV practicality or performance. Prototypes spotted in Death Valley reveal few significant styling changes from the recently introduced X6 other than an obvious bulge in the hood. Subsequent photos show a maze of electrical connections beneath the protruding sheet metal. All the extra hardware is necessary to control what's expected to be a two-mode hybrid system similar to what's found in GM's current Tahoe and Escalade Hybrid SUVs. BMW partnered with GM and Daimler in the development of the system. The two-mode system essentially combines electric motors with a sophisticated automatic transmission and traditional gasoline engine. It is able to provide pure electric power like a Prius, but most of the time it's a mix of both gasoline and electric power. A fuel mileage improvement of around 10-15 percent is about all you can expect given the added weight of the hybrid system's batteries combined with the X6's already substantial curb weight. With full production of the V8-powered X6 just now starting to ramp up to full speed, the introduction of the 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid (as BMW calls it) is probably at least a year away. Expect a substantial price bump, one that could put this hybrid BMW's base price in the $70,000 range. So much for saving money on gas. 2010 Honda Hybrid Spy Video LEARN MORE ABOUT THE 2010 HONDA HYBRID: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=129607?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..4.* It's been in the works ever since the Honda Insight went out of production in 2006, but this is the first time the 2010 Honda Hybrid Sedan has been caught out in the open. Designed as a direct competitor to the forthcoming 2010 Toyota Prius, this new Honda hybrid sedan is expected to debut early next year. The styling is intended to mimic Honda's FCX Clarity, a hydrogen-powered sedan that Honda began leasing to the public this summer. The Clarity fuel-cell vehicle is closer in size to Honda's Accord sedan while this hybrid will fall somewhere between the Accord and the smaller Civic. More important, this new hybrid sedan is expected to cost less than the Civic sedan. In a press conference earlier this year, Honda CEO Takeo Fukui told reporters that although the company's Prius fighter won't have next-generation lithium-ion batteries, the batteries it will use are lighter and more powerful than the current nickel-metal hydride variety. John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda, added, "These new advancements in Honda's technology and production systems will result in cost reductions that will allow us to make hybrid technology available to a whole new generation of buyers." In other words, even if the new 2010 Honda Hybrid is seen as nothing more than a Prius knockoff, it could still do well in the marketplace based on its rock-bottom price alone. Add in the fact that it could realistically get 45-50 mpg and this new entry-level hybrid sedan could eclipse the Prius as the best-selling hybrid in America — that is, it will be if Honda decides to bump up production. At the moment, Honda expects to ship only 100,000 units to the U.S. per year beginning in the fall of 2009. Spy Video: 2010 Ford Mustang by Inside Line http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=126178?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..3.* You have to look closely to see the changes in the 2010 Ford Mustang, the car that will be battling the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro for our attention. Our spy shooters were able to capture video of several prototypes on the streets of Michigan, and the cars all wore several layers of heavy camouflage. There are some visible changes to the 2010 Mustang's grille, as some of these prototypes show some extra brightwork around the headlights. The hood has a slightly different shape as well, but it's probably nothing more than a little Styrofoam to hide the true design. It doesn't appear as though heavy sheet metal changes are in the works for the rest of the car, since the overall greenhouse appears unchanged. Both the coupe and convertible test mules were wearing a new set of double-spoke wheels along with relatively low-profile tires. Changes to the rear end are harder to discern. Multiple pieces of disguise hide the true shape of the rear bumper, while the lights appear unchanged from the current model. Most of the changes are expected to come under the hood. A 5.0-liter V8 will replace the current 4.6-liter V8, which should result in a decent bump in horsepower. It's not an all-new engine, though, merely an enlarged version of the 24-valve SOHC V8. The real news will be the introduction of Ford's new EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6. Its twin-turbo setup should deliver more than 300 hp while delivering superior mileage compared to the 5.0-liter V8. How Ford will pitch the new high-tech engine is tough to call, but expect some sort of special edition to highlight the new power plant. As finished as these prototypes look, the 2010 Ford Mustang isn't expected to go on sale until the fall of 2009. The EcoBoost-powered version will come even later. It sounds like a long way off, but the timing should give the new Mustang a little bit of breathing room after the introduction of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro earlier in the year. 2010 Ford F-150 Raptor Spy Video http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=128474?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..1.* It wasn't in the initial product plans, but the 2010 Ford F-150 Raptor looks as though it has progressed into a full-scale production vehicle. Originally an under-the-radar project championed by a few dedicated engineers at Ford, the Raptor has already been shown to dealers and is expected to go on sale next year. The existence of the Raptor has been a well-kept secret until Sean Holman, an editor at Four Wheeler magazine, spotted a prototype testing in the California desert last year. Since then, Holman has been tracking the development of the new truck, and now we can show you the first spy video of the Raptor trolling the streets of Dearborn. A dedicated off-road truck, the Raptor will feature a fully customized suspension with unique wheels and tires, Holman says. Front-wheel travel is said to be increased by 4 inches thanks to Eibach springs and Fox remote-reservoir dampers. The tires appear to be 35-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/As mounted on 17-inch wheels, and an electronically controlled locking rear differential will come standard on the four-wheel-drive truck. The engine that will power the F-150 Raptor is still unknown. The Raptor was originally scheduled to introduce the new Boss V8, but that program has been scaled back due to fuel-efficiency concerns. It's possible that the planned 6.2-liter V8 will still make its way into the Raptor, but a carryover engine from the current lineup is a more likely scenario. Ford's 5.4-liter V8 is currently the biggest engine available in the F-150 and the most potent version is the supercharged motor in the Harley-Davidson edition. It uses a Saleen supercharger to make 450 horsepower, but the prototype in our video clearly pulls into a Roush facility. It shouldn't make much of a difference though, as the big V8 should make at least 400 hp regardless of which supercharger it uses. Then again, all of this speculation could be rendered useless if Ford decides that plummeting truck sales will make the Raptor a tough sell. Sales of the redesigned 2009 Ford F-150 have already been pushed back by two months, and the Boss engine program could be cancelled altogether if fuel regulations continue to tighten. Let's hope this is not the case, as the Raptor is one of the coolest factory-built specials we've seen in a long time — at least in prototype form. How else would you explain the presence of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze on the Nürburgring? An all-new chassis is probably the main reason why the Chevrolet Cruze is undergoing such heavy development testing. Dubbed Delta 2, the new platform is expected to filter down to several other GM products like the Chevrolet HHR and Opel Zafira. It remains front-wheel drive and from what we're told, it will feature a torsion-beam axle in back to keep down costs. That's a shame, really, as both Ford and Honda have figured out how to put independent suspensions in their compact sedans without breaking the bank. Of course, Chevrolet's engineers claim that the Cruze will ride and handle every bit as well as a Civic, Focus or Mazda 3. We'll see about that. In Europe, the Chevy Cruze will be offered with a choice of four-cylinder gas and diesel engines. For the U.S. market, GM intends to fit a turbocharged, direct-injection 1.4-liter that will deliver up to 40 mpg in highway driving. We presume that number is for models equipped with a manual transmission. Hopefully Chevrolet will find a way to specify a six-speed automatic for those who don't want to do their own shifting, but given the cost reductions found elsewhere, don't count on it. A replacement for the current Cobalt compact, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is scheduled to be unveiled this October at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. The tuning arm of Mercedes-Benz is rapidly approaching its peak in terms of horsepower, so cleaning up emissions while maintaining performance is the key for the future. This 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG spotted testing on the Nürburgring could be the first of AMG's new green machines. Mercedes-Benz officials have gone on record saying that all of the company's future engines will be turbocharged, so it's likely that AMG will follow suit. With that in mind, this sedan might not be an E63 at all, as the addition of one turbo (or maybe two) would likely mean a smaller-displacement engine. Either way, there will be at least 500 hp and a healthy amount of low-end torque to ensure that this super sedan can keep pace with its German rivals. Like the other E-Class sedan prototypes we've seen before, this test mule reveals only evolutionary changes to the overall shape of the midsize sedan. A redesigned set of headlights is the most dramatic change, but this AMG version also gets a deeper airdam with a pair of brake-cooling ducts at each front corner. They feed air to a serious-looking set of drilled rotors fitted with oversize calipers. There's not much of a body kit, and the rear fascia shows only minor changes compared to the current model. And like almost all AMG models, there are quad tailpipes poking out from the relatively clean rear fascia. It's a tame-looking setup, but the sound coming from the four pipes proved to be pure AMG as this sedan circled the Nürburgring. The public debut of the standard Mercedes-Benz E-Class isn't expected until early next year, so you probably won't see the 2010 E63 AMG until late 2009 at the earliest.
