Spy Catch: 2010 BMW 7 Series http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/FVDP/Preview/styleId=100857691 Although covered in plastic from nose to tail, our latest spy shots give the best look yet at the 2010 BMW 7 Series. Caught during testing on the streets of Munich, the 2010 7 Series looks as though it will maintain a size similar to the current model while cleaning up some of its controversial styling. Expected to start production in 2009, the 2010 7 Series will ride on a new platform with an internal designation of F01. In order to increase passenger space without adding more bulk, the new sedan will get a longer wheelbase without adding any significant length. An even bigger "L" version dubbed F02 will be offered that adds an additional 5.5 inches of length. Slight bulges around the rear wheels of this prototype also suggest a slightly wider track. Most of the styling changes will be evolutionary as this prototype shows an overall shape very similar to the current model. Up front, the twin-kidney grille looks as though it will be slightly larger while the slimmer headlights will be pushed farther to each side. The distinctive trunk design pioneered on the 2002 7 Series appears intact. We expect to see a new taillight design that will further reduce this 7's bulky rear end, but anyone hoping for a wholesale redesign will be disappointed. Like the current 7 Series, there will be the usual range of V8 and V12 engines. The real news for this 7 Series, however, will be its alternative-fuel options. Given BMW's participation in a hybrid development program with DaimlerChrysler and General Motors, it's a good bet that the 2010 7 Series will offer the option of a gas-electric drivetrain similar to the one planned for the 2009 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. By 2009, BMW may also have a diesel engine capable of meeting U.S. emission standards so that could be part of the package as well. BMW Hydrogen Powered 7-Series Imagine if every taxi in NYC were powered by the BMW's hydrogen-fueled V8: The only thing coming out of their tailpipes would be water vapor. I pull the Hydrogen 7 out into traffic and joust my way over to the West Side Highway and trundle up to 40-or-so miles per hour, far slower than its' touted 154-mph top speed. 2009 BMW 7 Series Spied on the Nürburgring http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=127892 Now that most of the camouflage has come off the 2009 BMW 7 Series, we can finally see some of the details. The verdict? Inconclusive, as it still looks a lot like the current 7 Series, judging by what we can see. The overall greenhouse appears almost unchanged, while the front and rear ends show only minor revisions. A taller hood area is the most noticeable difference up front, most likely a consequence of European pedestrian crash test standards. You can see it in the taller, narrower grille and more prominent crease in the hood. If you hate the distinctive trunk design that pioneered on the 2002 7 Series, you're still out of luck, as it appears intact on this prototype. We expect to see a new taillight design that will reduce the 7's bulky rear end, but anyone hoping for a wholesale redesign will be disappointed. Like the current 7 Series, there will be the usual range of V8 and V12 engines. The twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 that debuted in the X6 will most likely power the standard version. With 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, the next 7 Series should be one of the faster V8 luxury sedans around, especially if BMW goes ahead with an eight-speed automatic transmission as the rumors suggest. A V12 version with even more power should follow shortly after. Given BMW's participation in a hybrid development program with Daimler and General Motors, it's a good bet that the 7 Series will offer the option of a gas-electric hybrid drivetrain at some point, too. Diesel is another possible option, although BMW may want to wait and see how the 335d and X5 diesel fare in the U.S. before sending any oil-burning 7 Series our way. Look for the official pics and information to arrive sometime this summer. An official auto show debut is expected at the Paris auto show in October, with European sales beginning later this year. BMW E38 7Series The BMW E38 automobile platform was the basis for the 1994 through 2001 BMW 7 Series automobiles. It replaced the BMW E32 in 1995 and itself was replaced by the BMW E65/E66 for the 2002 model year. The E38 models were offered with either a five-speed automatic or manual transmission; the short-wheelbase 740i only came with a standard 6-speed manual, 740iL and 750i/iL had a 5-speed ZF automatic standard, 730d and 740d a GM-sourced five-speed automatic[1]. The engine variants in Europe were 725tds, 728i, 730i, 730d, 735i, 740i (4.0 and 4.4 L), 740d and 750i (with a 5.4 L 322 bhp (240 kW) engine, as was used in the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph). In the Americas, the models were sold as the 740i, 740iL and 750iL. The 740i and 740iL share the same 4.4 L V8 engine. The 740iL is essentially a long-wheelbase 740i (hence the "L" in the model name). The considerably rarer 5.4 L V12-powered 750iL was only available as a long-body; there was no E38 750i in the US lineup. The 750iL was BMW's flagship sedan. Features of the E38 7 Series included high-pressure headlight washers, auto-leveling xenon HID headlamps, power moonroof, a sound system with 14 speakers and four subwoofers as well as 6-disc CD changer, onboard satellite navigation and rain-sensing wipers. Other features included an automatic climate control system with separate controls for the driver and passenger, a three-position memory system for the driver's seat, safety-belt height, new steering wheel and outside mirrors. Front-seat side airbags and a Head Protection System (HPS) were also standard. The car featured an all-leather interior with burl walnut trim. The continuous-motion Active Comfort Seat technology was introduced in 1998 to improve comfort and reduce fatigue for the driver and front passenger. The base prices in 2001 were US$62,900 for the 740i, US$66,900 for the 740iL and US$92,100 for the 750iL. 740iL and 750iL Protection Line light-armored vehicles were built from 2000-2001, and cost US$99,100 and US$124,400, respectively. These models included body armor, bullet-resistant glass and run-flat tires. A rare executive V12-powered stretch limousine was also produced, called the BMW L7. When the E38 was phased out in 2001 to make way for the new E65, sales of E38s increased noticeably in the car's final months of production as people moved to buy the car before it was replaced. The E65's radical styling and iDrive was not initially well-received by consumers, so used E38s increased in value as demand increased. Also contributing to the E38's continued popularity was its appearance in several films such as Tomorrow Never Dies and The Transporter. Even though it was the only featured car in the series to be replaced the following year, the E38 featured in the BMW Film Ambush. Thank You BMW for creating this awesome BMW Model. BMW 7-series F01 Promo Video The BMW F01 is an automobile platform expected to go into production in late 2008 as a replacement for the current 7 Series (BMW E65/E66) platform. The long wheelbase, codenamed BMW F02, will be longer by 14 cm (5.5 in) than BMW F01. It will be also equipped with a more intuitive iDrive system. The current debate about this car revolves around what styling the car will appear with. This has become a very controversal topic ever since the (BMW E65/E66) platform was released to severe public scrunity for its dramatic departure from traditional BMW styling cues. BMW is expected to release a conservative design and has been showing concept cars that follow in a similar styling trend at autoshows for over a year in an attempt to acclimate the public to the new design cues ahead of the new car's release. The most recent photos of the car reveal a large sedan that maintains the BMW E65/E66 roofline and general cabin size, but returns to the 7-series' roots with shorter front and rear overhangs. Most interesting is that BMW has decided to remove the large trunklid that was the most controversal of the BMW E65/E66's styling and interestingly enough has been one of the most mimicked styling trends in modern car design. Fully undisguised product photos of the new 7 Series appeared on the net on the July 3, 2008. The new 7-Series loses much of its Bangle inspired design and looks more like a larger E60 5-Series, with a front end that takes from the BMW CS Concept. Overall, BMW looks to release a conservative car with modest sporting cues that will be visually pleasing Details are yet to emerge, however as reported BMW plans to use the F01 7-series to spearhead its move into hybrid engine technology. The F01 platform is expected to underpin a smaller Rolls-Royce slotting in below the ultra-luxury Phantom, internally known as the Rolls-Royce "RR4".
