Zorba the Greek Yolngu style Aboriginal interpretation of Zorba the Greek. Frank Djirrimbilpilwuy from Milingimbi has been in the Indigenous Media Industry for many years and has been a long-standing member and supporter of the Top End Aboriginal Bush Broadcasting Association, TEABBA Radio. He has worked Independently in Music and Film for many years also. As the man behind the camera and release of the video, Frank is also representing the dance group who call themselves "The Chooky Dancers". Frank has said that he filmed the footage at this years Ramingining Festival on the 30th September 2007 and knew it would be "something special" as soon as he saw the boys rehearsing. "The crowd went wild as you can see in the video, and the classic song Zorba the Greek has now become a hit overnight in the communities and now it seems, everywhere else too" Frank said. In just one week of being released onto "You Tube" by the staff at TEABBA Media Services, the video has received rave reviews been given a 5 star rating and has now been viewed well over 15,000 times. "The phones have not stopped ringing at the TEABBA offices, all from people who want to know more about the footage," a TEABBA staff member has said "even the honorable Kon Vatskalis with the Territory Labour party has commented on the video and suggested that they perform at the Greek Glenti next year." The Chooky Dancers are a group of 10 energetic young men who had healthy living in mind when they choreographed the performance. Franks son Lionel is the lead dancer in the video footage at front and center. "They (the Chooky Dancers) begun working on this just after this years Garma Festival in Gukula and worked very hard on it, they also do a Bollywood style performance which is also fantastic" Frank said. It seems that talent runs in Frank's family, with Franks Daughter also in an all Indigenous Line Dance Group also who Frank actively plays a role in. The "Zorba" video, which has not yet been given an official title, is just a sample of Franks works "I edited that footage on "imovie" at the TEABBA Media Services video workshop and now have plans to make a documentary about my Yolngu families connections to the Greek culture". Franks feelings towards the Greek culture have been reinforced by his daughter Pricilla, who requires constant care and is currently being cared for by a woman of Greek heritage in Darwin. "Lillian is a selfless woman, who cares for my daughter" Frank said " she takes Priscilla to church, weddings and all kinds of functions within the Greek community and they are all lovely people with strong cultural identity also which Yolngu people can identify to. I want to show through this documentary how 2 cultures can mix and this dance video is a fabulous start", Frank said. If anyone would like to enquire about Frank's work or "The Chooky Dancers", Frank can be reached on f_garawirrtja@yahoo.com or 0427 801 699 or if difficulties are experienced with getting through, messages can be left with TEABBA Radio on 89 390 400. The Chooky Dancers will appear on Channel 7s Australia's Got Talent which is currently screening on Tuesday nights. Tags: aboriginal dance zorba greek yolngu |

Overlander.tv - Aboriginal Tent Embassy, Canberra Travel Documentary - Canberra - Capital of Australia (pop. 310 000) Home of our politicians and maybe the most well planned out city in the world. The story goes that when deciding on a National Capital, those in Sydney and Melbourne wouldn't give an inch, so decided to locate a city between them. Arrived in Canberra by the red eye Thursday night. You could spend a week in Canberra just seeing exhibitions. You can visit the National Gallery, the National Museum, the National Library, the National Science and Technology Centre, Old Parliament House, New Parliament House, the Australian War Museum, the National film and sound archives, the national museum of erotica etc etc, I think you get the picture! Canberra is the first location where a story has fallen through. I wanted to take a light hearted look at Canberra's sex and drug laws, which are the most liberal in Australia. I tried to set up an interview with a Mistress, but had great difficultly getting a response. Strange... My back up story is on the Aboriginal Tent Embassy. Although you won't find it listed on any maps, it has been located at the front gardens of Old Parliament House for close on 30 years. I spoke with Darren Bloomfield, the appointed keeper of the Sacred fire. Tags: travel video documentary mark shea overlander.tv canberra aboriginal tent embassy |

Jabiluka: The Aboriginal Swindle - 40 min doc December 1997 The lure of Uranium has proved irresistible to successive Australian governments and Australia's Environment Minister has dismissed the Mirrar people's objections to the Jabiluka mine. This lucrative project could sever the Mirrar people's spiritual links with the earth and the sights of sacred significance throughout the valley. "I was born in the bush" Yvonne Margarula tells us, "sleeping on the ground with the fire". Twice Academy Award nominated director, David Bradbury, explores the effects of this cultural devastation on the lives of a people and a land inextricably joined.Rare archive footage shows how Yvonne's father and his people were bullied into giving their legal consent to a lease over Jabiluka. The traditional landowners were encouraged to consider not just their own wishes but that of Australian progress as a whole. But they thought they were negotiating for a land claim, not another uranium mine. Yvonne's father Toby was weakened by stress and spent most of the fateful meeting lying down. His sigh "I'm tired now, I can't fight any more" was taken as all the consent needed for the mine to go ahead. He received a silver plated pen for his trouble.Today, Yvonne continues his struggle. The issue of land rights is clearer to her: "We know we own the country." But the question remains, what are land rights worth when the Mirrar people are powerless to stop the destruction of cultural tradition? They have gained little from the development of their country, despite promises from the mining company. They receive 4.2% of gross sales from another mine, Ranger, but bureaucracy eats up most of that budget and basic services are conspicuously lacking. Today, Aborigines suffer from rampant alcoholism, a symptom of powerlessness. They receive an annual payment of $400 as a royalty for the lease for the Jabiluka mine, but now they want to give that money back to the mining company and to annul the old agreement. If Jabiluka goes ahead, it will be below the floodplain in a tropical wetland, and the fear is that radioactive deposits may be carried far with the rains. The land is a World Heritage sight, attracting 300,000 tourists a year. The Jabiluka mine project has been condemned by scientists and environmentalists, yet Energy Resources asserts that the risks of radiation are "absolutely negligible". "We do not add any radiation to what's already there naturally," he adds. But contaminated water supplies may be causing birth defects in Aboriginal children. Environmentalists are also concerned that the tailings will remain active for the next 250,000 years, and that mining increases the chances of stable uranium moving. It is the first of 26 Uranium mines awaiting government approval.Stunning footage of this threatened land reinforces the sadness felt for what could be lost. Now other Australians are supporting the Aborigines in what many see as standing up to what mounts up to an outright swindle of their land. Yvonne Margarula's fear grows more acute: "Money's not going to fix anything. They can take it back. White man money, not black fella money. Money's going to kill us." Protesters struggle to hang a banner on the proposed mine site. As the helicopter lifts away, the hilltop banner makes a poignant Image. In the struggle to protest in a language that will reach the white people, maybe the Aborigine voice will finally be heard.
