Abraham Lincoln - A Tribute (Ashokan Farewell) This is a tribute to the 16th President of the United States -- Abraham Lincoln. This president has become more central to America's image of itself than any chief executive before or after him. He has been called "Self-made man," "savior of the union," the "great emancipator" -- he is perhaps the most beloved president in American History. The Music is from Ken Burn's Documentary - "The Civil War" (1990). The Song is called "Ashokan Farewell", which was composed by Jay Ungar. NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED!!! ashokan farewell pickin in pickens rehearsing for a show, going over the tune ashokan farewell In the wee hours of April 21, violinist Philippe Quint did something very bad: While carrying his luggage across the street to his Manhattan apartment, he left his $4 million Stradivarius in the back of a taxi cab he'd taken from the airport in Newark, N.J. "I turned to get the violin, but I only saw a cab driving in the distance," the Grammy-nominated musician recalled. "I almost fainted, but at the same time I instantly knew that I had to do something, so I composed myself very quickly and I started making a lot of a lot of phone calls." Luckily, the taxi was a minivan, which allowed workers at the taxi commission to narrow the search to eight possible vehicles. The next day, they found the cabbie — who discovered the violin, untouched in the back of his van. Upon returning it to Quint, he got an enthusiastic response. Quint also decided to reward the cabbies for their help with a private concert in a parking lot near Newark Airport. Roughly 100 drivers attended the performance Tuesday, which also evolved into a farewell celebration for Khalil. As it turns out, the night he drove away was his last night in the business. "[Quint] was my last customer," the new retiree says. "And this is it. It's a happy ending for me and a happy ending for him, too." The Ashokan Farewell and Contradiction This video is for my friend Chris - hope you enjoy it Chris :-) Pictures of the Ashokan Reservoir, Ulster County in USA set to music from Celtic Woman followed by "The Contradiction" Ashokan Reservoir At noon of June 19, 1914, the blowing of all the steam whistles in the reservoir area for one solid hour announced the completion of the dikes and dams of the reservoir. The farms and villages were left to the rush of the oncoming waters, under which, to this day, the foundations of old houses and sites of well-remembered orchards and gardens are visible at low water. Communities -- Nine villages were either removed or obliterated forever in order to make this reservoir to supply water to new York. These included West Hurley, Ashton, Glenford, Brown's Station, Olive Bridge, Brodhead, Shokan, West Shokan and Boiceville. Eleven miles of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad tracks were taken up and relocated. Sixty-four miles of highway were discontinued, including a long stretch of the famous Plank Road, and forty new miles of boulevard built, mainly of macadam. Ten new bridges were constructed. A sensational feature was the removal from thirty-two cemeteries of two thousand eight hundred bodies or skeletons, including those of many soldiers of the Revolution, and their reinterment in new pine boxes in neighboring graveyards. Three-quarters of the land needed for the project was obtained by condemnation proceedings. Tags: Ashokan Farewell Celtic Woman Reservoir |

Virginia Tech Tribute (Ashokan Farewell) No questions, no politics, no blame games. Just a video essay using media photos about the incident and it's immediate aftermath. This one is for VTech, because today, we are all Hokies. The music is Ashokan Farewell, which was made famous by the Ken Burns Documentary, "The Civil War." Edit: 5 November 2008 - Today I came back and decided to watch this video again. Around the time I made this I was angry, confused, and sad at what happened on that April day. I chose to create this video because as a college student I felt a connection to what happened at VTech - I have often wondered if it could indeed happen here at Appalachian State. This video even to this day brings me to near tears, a welling up of sadness in the soul. I chose this song because as a child my father would play the Sullivan Ballou letter that made this song famous. This song has always brought up a deep emotional reaction in me, and I am not an emotional person. Thoughts of people who live and laughed, who had hopes and dreams, that are now no longer on this Earth. I believe Major Ballou said it best: " But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the garish day and in the darkest night—amidst your happiest scenes and gloomiest hours—always, always; and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath; or the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah, do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for me, for we shall meet again. " Should there be those that feel as I do about the shooting at VTech, may this video comfort you in your darkest hours. Above all, do not mourn but cherish the dead. We never know how blessed we are until we lose the very thing we take for granted. Tags: Virginia Tech Ashokan Farewell Hokies Tribute VTech VT Shooting loss grief comfort hope sadness |
