Lil Wayne's "A Milli", produced by Mr. Bangladesh, anchored Wayne's album into a stunning 1 million units sold in its first week. Otter Fishing - Bangladesh March 1997 In the world's most crowded country, Bangladesh, it's hard to imagine there's any room for nature. But we discover a unique relationship between man and beast. Crashing around in a log box, two otters in rope harnesses are desperate to get to their food. A fisherman lifts the lid and out they dive to munch on the fishtails scattered outside their wooden cage. Bengali fishermen use these otters to herd fish into their nets. Every year Bengali menfolk bid their families farewell and sail downstream to catch their fish. With a sharp smack on the bottom, the otters are dispatched into the water and told to swim for their keep! More often than not, they get caught up in the nets and incur verbal abuse from their masters. As crimson sunset falls, the fishermen cook by their fires and the otters curl up in the boxes and go to sleep. Tags: Bangladesh Otters Logs animals Journeyman Pictures |

The Young Hardworking Poor of Rural Bangladesh The poor aren't lazy. In this video I meet 30 kids who were forced to choose between either putting food on the table or getting an education. They are able to study part-time (for two hours each day) because local community members in this rural village pooled their money to form an informal school. The school teacher teaches these children English, Bengali, and Math all for a salary of $15 a month. Part Two is Available Here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=83edvBwXJKI For more information about what I'm doing in Bangladesh, check out my blog at: http://uncultured.com In the video, one of the kids said he sells "paan". Here is some info on what that is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paan By request, I am including a link for more information on Bangladesh: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangladesh Bangladesh is a small country with over 150 million people (half the population of the USA) in South Asia. It is not Mexico (!?). About My Reaction to the Various Names: This video isn't scripted - those were my genuine reactions at the time. I still have problems pronouncing the various Muslim names in this country. The regional accent made it even harder to understand the names. One of the reasons I asked "You're Muslim and your name is Johnny?" is because Western/European names are usually common with the Christian community that lives in an adjacent town. National Anthem of Bangladesh My golden bangla, I love you Forever your skies, your air set my heart in tune as if it were a flute, In Spring, Oh mother mine, the fragrance from your mango-groves makes me wild with joy- Ah, what a thrill! In Autumn, Oh mother mine, in the full-blossomed paddy fields, I have seen spread all over - sweet smiles! Ah, what a beauty, what shades, what an affection and what a tenderness! What a quilt have you spread at the feet of banyan trees and along the banks of rivers! Oh mother mine, words from your lips are like Nectar to my ears! Ah, what a thrill! If sadness, Oh mother mine, casts a gloom on your face, my eyes are filled with tears! Tags: bangladesh national anthem 1971 tagore pakistan dhaka bangla bengal olimpic 2008 beijing guardian |

Bangladesh - Renewable Technology Opportunities for Women Opportunity for Women in Renewable Energy Technology Use in Bangladesh. This was initiated in 1999 with $175,000 from ESMAP as a project in Char Montaz, a coastal island in Bangladesh, with technical assistance from Prokaushali Sangsad Ltd (PSL). South Asia Partnership, Bangladesh, an NGO provided initial support in social mobilization and micro-credit. The project provided skill and renewable energy technology training to 32 poor women in Char Montaz and assited them in establishing the Coastal Women's Electrification and Development Microenterprise, which now has become a SME with 117 employees. Diversification: Initially, it was assembling of DC lamps and providing services through battery charging station. Now the SME has moved to assembling CFL and LED lamps, controllers and inverters of solar home system (SHS) and mobile phone chargers. It has provided SHS to almost 30,000 households, small enterprises and markets in coastal areas, where grid electrification is not a feasible option. The lessons from this project was taken into a larger project: Bangladesh Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Development ($200m). In this project, nearly 200,000 SHS are provided to poor households in remote areas. Grameen Shaki, Srijani, TMSS and other NGOs learnt from this project and made micro-finance available to the poor households for SHS.
