Howard Beale : Turn off your television sets 1976. Howard Beale played by Peter Finch. "We'll tell you any shit you want to hear. We deal in illusions, man! None of it is true! But you people sit there day after day, night after night, all ages, colors, creeds...We're all you know. You're beginning to believe the illusions we're spinning here. You're beginning to think that the Tube is reality and that your own lives are unreal. You do whatever the Tube tells you. You dress like the Tube; You eat like the Tube; You raise your children like the Tube; You even think like the Tube. This is mass madness! You maniacs! In God's name, you people are the real thing. We are the illusion! So turn off your television sets. Turn them off now. Turn them off right now. Turn them off and leave them off. Turn them off right in the middle of this sentence I'm speaking to you now. Turn them off!" http://www.whysanity.net/monos/network6.html http://www.turnoffyourtv.com/reviews/networkreview.html Plus d'infos : http://souk-fares.blogspot.com/2007/05/network-film-culte.html Tags: television network |

Beale Street Blues - Marion Harris Mary Ellen Harrison aka Marion Harris was born in 1896, probably in Indiana. While in her teens, she performed in vaudeville and movie theatres in Chicago. She was discovered by a talent scout who got her a part in Irving Berlin's "Stop!Look! Listen!" in 1915. In 1916 she began recording for Victor Talking Machine Co. performing such hits as "After You've Gone", and her smash success "Ain't Got Nobody" in August 1916. Her July 1917 recording of "When I See That Jazz Band Play" is probably the first rendition of a jazz song ever recorded by a woman. In her early days, she preferred to sing W C Handy's blues music, and in fact, performed Handy's music so well that he said in his autobiography "Miss Harris had used our numbers in vaudeville for a long time and she sang blues so well that people thought that the singer was colored". In 1920, Victor Records tired of her being a white blues singer and refused to let her record Handy's "St Louis Blues". She left for Columbia where she recorded the music in April 1920 five years before Bessie Smith's rendition of that music which became one of the best blues numbers ever made. Bessie also recorded Marion's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" in 1927, eight years after Harris made her recording of that song in February 1919. Harris appeared on Broadway in the 20s, played the Palace Theatre regularly, appeared in Florenz Ziegfeld's Midnite Frolic, and appeared in several films. In the late 30s, she married a British theatrical agent and moved to London. Their home was destroyed by a German firebomb in 1941. She returned to the safety of the US in '44 but tragically died in a New York hotel fire at age 48. Beale Street-Memphis, Tennessee's famous musical blvd. has nurtured the talent of jazz greats W C Handy, Memphis Minnie, Buster Bailey, Alberta Hunter, Erskine Tate and all the way to R&R artists such as Elvis Presley. Acker has changed the style of his band from trad jazz in the sixties to the more Condon styled Approach. He replaced banjo with piano and here in or around 1990 during a concert somewhere in Germany they play Beale Street Blues. and yes indeed, in the Condon arrangement, nice and loose with the specific riff chorus at the end of the tune.
