Biointensive Gardening 2a - Deep Bed Prep The second component of biointensive gardening is deep bed preparation. (see John Jeavons' book "how to grow more vegetables", or www.growbiointensive.org) This video is the first of four videos which show the double-digging method. Here, you see us spreading compost about an inch thick over the five by twenty foot bed. Tags: biointensive bed preparation double-digging john jeavons growing soil |

Biointensive Gardening 3 - Composting The third component of this exposee on bio-intensive growing, here's an example of how to help "grow soil" by composting. The general formula is (1) a layer of kitchen scraps or "green", live yard waste like weeds or grasses, (2) A thin layer of soil and (3) a layer of "brown" or mature vegetation, like straw, dead leaves, etc. Tags: garden compost organic permaculture raven john jeavons biointensive |

Double Digging Here is an example of the Double Dig process used to loosen compacted soil with hand tools. Double Digging is recommended by John Jeavons, in his book How to Grow More Vegetables, as a way of rapidly improving compacted soils. We are double digging the Kentucky State University high tunnel in an attempt to encourage salts to leach through the soil more rapidly. (Salt build-up can be a problem in high tunnels, where it never rains.) This two and a half minute video shows about two hours of work.
