The Battle of Britpop (Oasis vs Blur) 1995 french television The Battle of Britpop is the unofficial title given to the 1995 singles chart battle between two popular Britpop groups, Blur and Oasis. The two bands had had a long-running feud with each side expressing their hatred for the other. On one occasion Noel Gallagher of Oasis said he wished that Damon Albarn and Alex James of Blur would "catch AIDS and die" (he later apologized for his comments). The feud between the two bands came into the mainstream in 1995 when Blur decided to release their single "Country House" a week early to coincide with Oasis's single "Roll With It". In the end, Blur won the battle by 58,000 sales: "Country House" sold 274,000 copies to 216,000 copies sold of "Roll with It". Blur and Oasis have distanced themselves as much as possible from this event, as Oasis say they considered it over-hyped nonsense that they never really took seriously and accused Damon Albarn of merely trying to promote Blur by over-hyping the situation. Britpop - The Story Of 'Blur vs Oasis' Blur's label 'Food Records' moved the original release date of 'Country House' to be on the same day as Oasis' "Roll With It". The British media had already reported an intense rivalry between the two bands and this clash of releases was seen as a battle for the number one spot. "Country House" won Blur the Battle of Britpop ("Roll With It" coming in at No. 2 and having significantly smaller sales) but they lost the war as The Great Escape was beaten by Oasis' album (What's the Story) Morning Glory on sales. Incidentally, "Country House" features the lines "He's got morning glory/And life's a different story" which is largely assumed to have been a jab at Oasis. However, Blur actually recorded the song before Oasis had completed, let alone released, the Morning Glory album. With dance act Jamiroquai also having recorded a song named "Morning Glory" in the mid-1990s, it is possible that may have been the influence behind that line, while some have suggested that the line was a jibe at Julian Cope, who was known for using LSD. It may, however, simply have been a reference to waking up with an erection (an event for which "morning glory" is a British slang expression).
