Improving China-Taiwan Business Relations ANCHOR: Former president of Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp., Robert Tsao, met with supporters of Taiwan's ruling party, the Guo Min Dang, over the weekend. He talked about his ideas for easing the strained relationship between Taiwan and mainland China, ideas that have brought out many different opinions amongst the public. Here's NTD's Ben Hedges with the story. STORY: These are the 15th anniversary celebrations for the Xin Dang, a political party with close political ties to Taiwan's ruling Guo Min Dang, held in Taipei. Robert Tsao a leading Taiwanese businessman speaking at the celebration received a positive reaction from high level officials in Taiwan's Xin Dang and Guo Min Dang parties. Yet Mr. Tsao's ideas may be a step too far for many, he proposes holding a vote on whether Taiwan should be re-unified with mainland China, and believes that the re-unification would bring certain benefits to Taiwan. [Robert Tsao, Former UMC President]: "We believe re-unification is possible, but if the CCP doesn't take seriously the Taiwanese people's public opinion, how can they use the method of peace to unify the two sides. How can we display Taiwanese citizens' opinions, of course we need public voting. If we set this peace law, there is hope to solve the issues between the two sides, and contribute to the next stage of modern development. What is the biggest issue today in mainland China? The CCP must earn its political rights through voting rather than through weapons." Mr. Tsao believes his so-called law for peace between the two sides of the Taiwan Straight, will give China less reason to attack Taiwan and help speed up modern development in China's interior provinces. He plans to form an organization to promote his ideas in society. [Wang Jin-pyng, Parliament Leader]: "They can select their future based on their ideas. There are different points of view, yet we will be glad to see these things happening in the future." [Yok Mu-ming, Xin Dang Party President]: "With regard to the foundation for improving peace between the two sides, I am not involved in this organization but I believe many people will be glad to see anything that can improve the peace between the two sides of the Taiwan straight." Although Mr. Tsao has high expectations of his two sides peace law, business is his main motivation. He didn't give any indication as to whether China's communist regime is promising to maintain the current level freedom and human rights in Taiwan would be a prerequisite for re-unification. [Robert Tsao, Former UMC President]: "It depends on how we think about it, I actually feel, for Taiwan, we don't need to judge how mainland china is. The two sides peace law, it will be enough for Taiwanese if we earn what we need, we don't need to talk about what mainland China will do to Taiwan in the future." [Robert Tsao, Former UMC President]: "I hope that scholars from the two sides can talk about the issues together, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Qinghua University, Chengchi University Center for East Asian Studies most of them have departments that do research on Taiwan." Mr. Tsao says he has reached the same opinions with mainland Chinese scholars. Tsao's views raise many questions among Taiwanese about, how to strike the fine balance between maintaining a stable relationship with China and bowing to the communist regime.
