Jumpin' at the Woodside - European All Stars, Lino Patruno Song by Count Basie ANTTI SARPILA (clarinet & saxophones), Christian Plattners (tenor sax), Henry Chaix (piano), Lino Patruno (guitar), Roman Dylag (bass), Gregor Beck (drums). 1988 Bern Jazz Festival http://www.linopatruno.it http://www.cambiamusica.it http://www.michaelsupnick.com William "Count" Basie (August 21, 1904 -- April 26, 1984) was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. Commonly regarded as one of the most important jazz bandleaders of his time, Basie led his popular Count Basie Orchestra for almost fifty years. Many notable musicians came to prominence under his direction, including tenor saxophonists Lester Young and Herschel Evans, trumpeters Buck Clayton and Harry "Sweets" Edison and singers Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams. Basie's theme songs were "One O'Clock Jump" and "April In Paris." "Every Day I Have The Blues" (1955), sung by the deep-voiced Williams, was also a hit. William James Basie was born on August 21, 1904 in Red Bank, New Jersey to Harvey Lee Basie and Lillian Ann Childs, who lived on Mechanic Street. His father worked as coachman for a wealthy family. After automobiles replaced horses, his father became a groundskeeper and handyman for several families in the area. His mother took in laundry, and was Bill Basie's first piano teacher when he was a child. He started out to be a drummer, but the obvious talents of another young Red Bank drummer, Sonny Greer (who was Duke Ellington's drummer from 1919 to 1951), discouraged young Basie and he switched to piano. While he was in his late teens, he gravitated to Harlem, where he met Fats Waller who taught him how to play organ. Basie toured the Keith circuit before the age of 20 and later the Columbia Burlesque and the Theater Owners Bookers Association (T.O.B.A.) vaudeville circuits starting in 1924 as a soloist, accompanist to blues singers Katie Krippen and Gonzelle White and music director for various acts. His touring took him to Kansas City, Missouri, where he met many jazz musicians in the area. In 1928 he joined Walter Page's Blue Devils, and the following year became the pianist with the Bennie Moten band based in Kansas City. It was at this time that he began to be known as "Count" Basie (see Jazz royalty). He started his own band in 1934, but eventually returned to Moten's band. After Moten died in 1935, the band unsuccessfully attempted to stay together. Basie formed a new band, which included many Moten alumni. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Count_Basie Tags: Jazz Dixieland Swing revival |

Donaldson was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of a piano teacher. While still in school he wrote original music for school productions, and had his first professional songs published in 1915. The following year he had a hit with "The Daughter of Rosie O'Grady". After serving in the United States Army in World War I, Donaldson was hired as a songwriter by Irving Berlin Music Company. He stayed with Berlin until 1928, producing many hit songs, then in 1928 established his own publishing company. His company was legally Donaldson, Douglas & Gumble, Inc, but all the publications had Walter Donaldson's name in large letters, and the legal name of the company in fine print. Walter Donaldson published some 600 of his original songs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Donaldson Tags: Jazz Dixieland Swing revival donaldson |

Andrzej Żuławski's The Silver Globe (Na srebrnym globie) # 1 http://www.andrzej-zulawski.com/ Director: Andrzej Żuławski. Screenplay: Andrzej Żuławski, Jerzy Żuławski (Based On His Books). Scenography: Tadeusz Kosarewicz, Jerzy Śnieżawski. Music: Andrzej Korzyński. Cast: Andrzej Seweryn, Jerzy Trela, Grazyna Dylag, Waldemar Kownacki, Iwona Bielska, Jerzy Gralek, Elzbieta Karkoszka, Krystyna Janda, Maciej Góraj, Henryk Talar, Leszek Dlugosz, Andrzej Frycz, Henryk Bista, Wieslaw Komasa, Jerzy Golinski. Year: 1976-78 & 1986-87 http://www.filmweb.pl/o294/Andrzej+%C5%BBu%C5%82awski The labyrinthine plot deals with a group of space researchers who left the Earth to find freedom. Their spaceship crashes and they land on the dark side of the Moon. They all die except one and leave a lot of children who eventually turn to shamanism and fire worship. They call the last survivor the Old Man and simultaneously loathe and revere him. Finally, the Old Man retreats to the mountains, puts his video diary into a small rocket and sends it to Earth. The rocket reaches its destination and the notes fall into the hands of another group of researchers. One of them, Marek, journeys to the Old Man's planet and lands in the mountains. When he emerges from the hills, the aboriginal inhabitants mistake him for the long-awaited reincarnation of the Old Man and look to him to deliver them from the dreaded sherns — strange, winged mutants. The making of this film in 1978 was brutally interrupted by the Polish Ministry of Culture. When about 80% of the shooting was complete, they ordered the filmmakers to destroy all related materials. This decision caused director Andrzej Zulawski to leave his homeland for France, where he spent the next ten years. During the democratization of the Polish political regime in 1986-1987, Zulawski returned to the country to finish the picture. Having lost the sets, costumes, actors, and momentum, the director chose to complete the film from the spared footage, adding a voiceover for the missing episodes and utilizing other actors to dub the original actors who were no longer available. Even in this mutilated form, the film appears as a highly ambitious, if overwrought, sci-fi epic that draws upon philosophical concepts rather than special effects.
