Der Golem (1920) with new original soundtrack The classic 1920 German expressionist black and white horror film "The Golem" gets a new soundtrack by Hollywood composer Carvin Knowles in this original JewishJournal.com video Carvin Knowles writes: In the 16th Century CE Rabbi Judah Loew was said to have created a powerful Golem to defend Prague's Jewish ghetto. Although I composed this segment of of score for the scene in Paul Wegener's 1920 prequel to his silent Golem series in the summer of 2002, I only recorded it during the last weekend of October in 2007. I played all the brass and woodwinds myself, including the oboe solo near the beginning and the gong, all in my small Hollywood apartment. In this scene, Rabbi Loew summons the Sumerian demon Astaroth to learn the word that will bring the Golem to life -- rendered in the most arcane transliteration from Hebrew that I have ever seen, the word is "Aemath" meaning 'emet' (Hebrew)' or 'truth.' I had imagined Rabbi Loew reciting the Shema to hold the ancient demon at bay. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by Der Golem, the great Jewish monster of clay who only comes to life when Truth is in his breast (or on his tongue, in the original text). Whether it is the silent film or the Hammer horror version or even Mozart's "Don Giovanni" (which, incidentally, had it's premier in Prague), the living statue has always terrified and thrilled me. Stone Golem This Stone Golem was constructed using about 5 foam mattresses, over 50 sticks of hot melt glue, and 8 cans of grey and black spray paint. The foam is glued in large thick sheets (approx 20cm thick) to a fabric bodysuit, and the deep cracks are carved into the foam surface. The bodysuit has a zip up the back to allow the wearer to enter it, and the zip is concealed by abutting foam. The soles of the feet are made of corflute that has been sliced in half to expose corrugations that act as grip. The arms are about twice the length of the wearer\'s arms, and act as swinging weapons made entirely of soft foam. The golem took about 100 hours of work to construct, between 3 people. Der Golem -- Analog Man The surviving film of Paul Weggener's trilogy of movies surrounding the Golem, Der Golem is actually a prequel of sorts, thus proving this sort of thing isn't new. Filmed in Germany, 1920, the political and social ramifications of this film are as thick as the expressionistic imagery throughout. I'll leave you to sort all that out, the film is available at the Internet Archive, go and watch it. This isn't quite the film I wanted for the song, but finding free use film of Tesla just wasn't happening. So if I can't showcase that analog man, then I'll swing wildly away from technology to magic. In this scene, Loew wrests from the darkness the word that will give his Golem life while his assistant Famulus ...well, he spends a lot of time fainting. It ain't Harry Potter, that's for damn sure. You are hearing a synthesizer line that our younger son actually created when he was around three or so, playing with the Moog MG-1. (MG-1s, love them or hate them, they're tough enough for your kids.) Tedd took that off beat loop, and went to work on it. You will hear three MG-1s at once, and that fat hiss is the real deal, this was recorded onto a 1/4 reel-to-reel.
