Pt 1 Kolpakova coaches Lezhnina debut Kirov Sleeping Beauty The commercial video of the Kirov Sleeping Beauty featuring Larissa Lezhnina in the leading role of Aurora, was filmed during the Kirov's North American tour in Montreal. The producers of that film used a video filmed in Leningrad of Lezhnina's first performance as Aurora, a few months prior to her Montreal performance shown on commerical video, to prepare them for their live filming of her Montreal Sleeping Beauty. The commerical video of Sleeping Beauty was her second performance as Aurora. This video is her coach, Irina Kolpakova, coaching her for her Leningrad (St. Petersburg) debut as Aurora. It was very difficult to film Lezhnina, rehearsing for her debut as Aurora. She was very nervous and unsure of herself. She felt uncomfortable being filmed rehearsing for a major role that she had never performed. She also knew that she was scheduled to be filmed in Montreal for Canadian TV and commerical video. That put extra pressure on her. Her debut in Leningrad was a remarkable performance by her and the Kirov company and Vaganova students involved in her first performance. She overcame her nerves with a performance that must have pleased her coach, Kolpakova, greatly. Lezhnina only allowed filming of her debut rehearsals two times. This is one of those two times. 1/11 1974 Bolshoi Gala Montreal Baryshnikov Defects Kolpakova In April of 1974, the Bolshoi Ballet came to Canada with a small group of dancers featuring two stars from the Kirov Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Irina Kolpakova . The Bolshoi group was led by Raisa Struchkova and her husband, Alexander Lapauri . The two main ballerinas on this tour were in their forties with Struchkova showing tremendous energy at almost age 49. I seem to remember this being his last performance prior to his defection, but if it was not his last performance on this tour, it was one of his last performances prior to his defection. His defection was a great event in the west, but when Struchkova and her husband returned to the Soviet Union, they returned in disgrace and it took her a long time to recover and in her husband's case, he soon died in a car accident, so he never did recover from the effects of the defection. The defection severely hindered any Soviet ballet tours after that, particularly in the case of the Kirov which had defectors in Nureyev and Makarova prior to Baryshnikov. The ballets featured in this performance alphabetically are Don Quixote , Fairy Doll , Legend of Love , Ocean and the Pearl pas de trois from the Little Humped Back Horse , Sleeping Beauty and the complete one act Walpurgis Night from Faust .
