Tom Perkins - The Greatest Sailboat Ever - Maltese Falcon Tom Perkins, the venture capitalist behind such companies as Google, Genentech, Amazon, and AOL, doesn't do things halfway. When he collected vintage cars, for instance, he had the world's largest collection of Bugatti automobiles. And when he decided to pursue a lifelong dream and build a sailing yacht, he went the whole nine yards: He decided it would be the world's largest yacht--big enough to fit Noah's Ark on its deck. 75: Barcelona World Race, Miami Mermaids, Sailboat Sinkings http://www.TheBoaters.TV EP 75 -- First UP: Last week in the Barcelona World Race, team Hugo Boss had a scary near collision with a merchant cargo ship. Skipper Alex Thomson had spotted the oncoming ship when she was still a good five miles away, but the cargo ship failed to see the black Hugo Boss monohull -- and consequently, was at fault in the incident. According to the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) also states that "Except in narrow channels, traffic schemes, and when overtaking, a power-driven vessel must give way to a sailing vessel." Again, fault goes to the cargo ship, whose responsibility it was to steer away from the sailing Open 60. The duo aboard Hugo Boss tried to avoid the collision by altering their course a few degrees, which caused the vessel to end up on its side. Not only did Hugo Boss recover, but from December 6th--7th, the team set a new 24-hour record for monohulls up to 60 foot -- 492.7 miles. Next up: Meet the Miami Mermaids. Daysailer King Fisher III 12ft SAILBOAT SAILING DINGHY LI NY This is the first chapter of our little day sailer; recently bought on eBay. This film was taken the day I brought it home after purchasing it in Southold, New York. We live very close to Bellport Bay on Long Island. It is very shallow here, and we cannot have a boat with a large keel (ours has a swing keel). This boat also easily becomes a little motor boat, as you will see in my next video, cruising around our bay with a classic 1973 Johnson 4 hp 2 stroke motor. At the time of this video, new sails are being made at Doyle Sails in Huntington, NY. Through researching, I found that Philip L. Rhodes was the original designer of this boat in 1960 an the original builder was Atlantic Fiberglass , although this version was built by American Fiberglass Corp. in February of 1974. His 12 Meter Weatherly won the America's Cup in 1962. David Stanton of American Sails, SC was also very helpful in providing information about this boat. I am hoping to deal with him soon for more parts for this classic sail boat. If you have any information you may be able to share or photographs or your own American Kingfisher III, that would be greatly appreciated. You may contact me at cdalego@aol.com. I hope by posting this I may inspire other King Fisher III owners to write about or film their boats as well. There is not much information to be found online at this point in time -- they are almost forgotten about. sailboat trouble This incident takes place in the harbour of Egersund, Norway summer 06. A guy tries to take out his sailboat, but fumbles and falls overboard. His boat, however, continues at full revs astern, goes into a spin .. and misses other boats between the two piers by less than a meter. The boat continues 4 full turns (still without crashing!) before we get our video camera ready to shoot. Note the owner (now being pulled out of the water) trying to jump back onboard again on the 5th turn, and the two guys in a dingy performing a Mc Gyver style rescue operation. Enjoy.
