Object Capabilities for Security Google Tech Talks November, 30 2007 ABSTRACT Existing systems often do a poor job of meeting the principle of least privilege. I will discuss how object capability systems and language-based methods can help address this shortcoming. In language-based object capability systems, an object reference is treated as a capability; unforgeability of references ensures unforgeability of capabilities; and all privileges are expressed as capabilities in this way. This makes it possible to decompose the system into distrusting "privilege-separated" components, providing each component with the least privilege it needs to do its job; to reason about the privileges and powers available to various program elements, often in a local (modular) way; and to avoid common pitfalls, such as confused deputy and TOCTTOU vulnerabilities. I will attempt to introduce the audience to some work in this area that is perhaps not so widely known, and I will describe some work in progress to construct a subset of Java, called Joe-E, that is intended to enable capability-style programming using a programming syntax that is familiar to Java programmers. Speaker: David Wagner David Wagner is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Division at the University of California at Berkeley with extensive experience in computer security and cryptography. He and his Berkeley colleagues are known for discovering a wide variety of security vulnerabilities in various cellphone standards, 802.11 wireless networks, and other widely deployed systems, and he has published two books and over 90 peer-reviewed scientific papers. David is a founding member of the ACCURATE center on electronic voting. He is active in the areas of systems security, cryptography, and electronic voting. The Xbox 360 Security System and its Weaknesses Google Tech Talks August 11, 2008 ABSTRACT After the disaster of the original Xbox, Microsoft put a lot of effort in designing what is probably the most sophisticated consumer hardware security system to date. We present its design, its implementation, its weaknesses, how it was hacked, and how to do it better next time. Speaker: Michael Steil Michael Steil has been involved with various embedded systems hacking projects, like the Xbox, the Xbox 360 and the GameCube. In 2006, he has spoken at Google about the flaws in the security system of the original Xbox. Speaker: Felix Domke Felix Domke is the principal author of the Xbox 360 hack and the Linux port. He has also significantly contributed to hacking the dbox2, the GameCube and the Wii, and porting Linux to the respective platforms. People & Power - Malaysia's Internal Security Act - 9 Sep 08 Malaysia's Internal Security Act or ISA has its roots in the 1950s, when the country, then under British colonial rule, was fighting a Communist insurgency. Almost six decades on and the Communist threat has gone but the law remains. Opponents say many of the act's original checks and balances have been eroded over the years and the ISA is now being used to stifle political dissent. But the government says the law is a necessary tool in the pursuit of social stability. Aloke Devichand reports on those fighting to have the ISA abolished once and for all. Consumerization of enterprises: A Security Conundrum Google Tech Talks July, 31 2008 ABSTRACT Consumerization of enterprises: A Security Conundrum No one can argue that consumerization is happening within today's enterprises. This is the first time in the computing history that consumer technologies are driving innovation and technology adoption, rather than taking a back seat to enterprise and military technologies. Consumer technologies bring a rich, interactive user experience, which is a powerful draw for workplace adoption. Businesses are also finding compelling use of consumer technologies to foster innovative and new B2C and B2B markets. Today, 25% of all organizations have an enterprise priority to implement Web 2.0 technologies in 2008. But on a larger scale, the use of consumer technologies in enterprises remains spotty and limited. One of the biggest challenges is security and the level of management control to which enterprises are accustomed. This talk presents a vision of full consumerization of enterprises, with ubiquitous adoption of consumer technologies and a seamless experience between consumer and enterprise apps. We'll investigate security implications of such a vision, and more specifically, technological advances that would be needed to support such a vision. The author intends this to be an interactive discussion rather than a presentation and is seeking audience members' feedback to the "full consumerization" vision. Speaker: Dr. Chenxi Wang Dr. Chenxi Wang is a principal analyst with Forrester. She leads Forrester's research in areas including content security, application security, threats and vulnerability management, and software security. Chenxi brings to Forrester years of sophisticated research experience; her previous experience includes a five-year stint as an associate research professor at Carnegie Mellon University, where she published many research papers on network security and distributed systems. Previously, Chenxi served as the chief scientist for KSR, a managed security service startup in the San Francisco bay area. Chenxi also serves as an investigative forensics expert for the Federal Trade Commission. She is the recipient of a Critical Infrastructure Protection Fellowship from the Army Research Office and the Samuel Alexander Fellowship of ACM for outstanding Ph.D. thesis research. Security as a System-Level Constraint Google Tech Talks June 4, 2008 ABSTRACT The essence of system-level design is the need to concurrently consider information from multiple engineering domains across multiple subsystems to assess holistic system properties. The systems engineer is responsible for bringing together all facets of a system for evaluation of system-level requirements and to aid in understanding system impacts of local design decisions. System-level security, encompassing issues such as confidentiality of information, integrity and authenticity of information sources, and availability of critical services, is one of many interacting system-level issues that must be addressed. To evaluate system-level security, we must treat security requirements as system-level properties, addressing their satisfaction in the same manner as traditional system-level issues such as power consumption or safety. Specifically, we must provide support for representing system-level security requirements; composing and integrating information from heterogeneous models; and establishing dependencies between models to assess the security health of a complete system. This talk overviews work surrounding the the Rosetta system-level design language with emphasis on efforts to specify, synthesize and verify software defined radios. Speaker: Perry Alexander Dr. Perry Alexander is a Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department and Director of the Information and Telecommunication Technology Center's Computer Systems Design Laboratory at The University of Kansas. His research interests include system-level modeling, security and assurance, design languages, heterogeneous specification, language semantics, and embedded systems. He received the BSEE and BSCS in 1986, the MSEE in 1988, and the PhD in 1992 all from The University of Kansas. From September 1992 through July 1999 he was a faculty member and director of The Knowledge-Based Software Engineering Laboratory in the Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science department at The University of Cincinnati. He is the chief architect of the Rosetta system specification language and author of System-Level Design using Rosetta published by Morgan Kaufmann in 2006. Dr. Alexander has published over 90 refereed research papers and has presented numerous invited presentations. He has won 15 teaching awards, was named a Kemper Teaching Fellow and won the ASEE Midwest Region Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2003. He is a Senior Member of ACM, Sigma Xi, and a Senior Member of IEEE where he served as Chair of the Engineering of Computer-Based Systems Engineering Technical Committee and currently serves as Chair of the DASC P1699 Rosetta Working Group.
