Sally Shapiro - Jackie Jackie Directed by Jamie Milligan for Tarantula Productions, the video shows a pop-besotted, long haired child pulling a Sally Shapiro record out from between albums by Cyndi Lauper and Duran Duran. Like someone straight from the Smiths' "Rubber Ring", the kid lies in awe on the bed, sings into the phone at Sally, and dances around the bedroom giddily, completely transported. - Marc Hogan, PitchforkMedia.com Tags: Sally Shapiro Jackie Disco Romance Italo ItaloDisco Electro Johan Agebjorn Dance Paper Bag Records Diskokaine |

Miss Shapiro 801 Terre Shapiro Blaine School District Terre Shapiro is the 2006 Regional Teacher of the Year from the Northwest Educational Service District 189. She teaches in Blaine School District at Blaine Primary School. Terre has been teaching for 19 years, all of which have been in self-contained, primary aged classrooms. Terre was a Summa Cum Laude graduate from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN in 1985 with a B.A. in Elementary Education and a Science Teaching minor. Upon graduation, she relocated to Lincoln County School District in Lincoln City, OR and taught 3rd grade. In 1989, she moved to Blaine School District where she taught in 1st and 3rd grade classrooms. Terre received her Master's of Education Degree in Science Education for Elementary Educators from WWU in 1992. Terre has supervised a number of student teachers and practicum students during her career. From 1997-1998 Terre was an adjunct professor at WWU where she taught Science Methods courses to Elementary Practicum students in the Science Education Department. Terre also is an ELIC ( Early Literacy In-service Course) Facilitator. She has taught ELIC classes to teachers in Blaine, Ferndale, and Nooksack School Districts. Terre has a passion and enthusiasm for education that she radiates to her students. She believes that children are capable of learning much more than what is typically expected of them. When students are shown a personal purpose for learning, they approach activities with a positive attitude and enthusiasm. For this reason and to address the academic diversity in her classroom, Terre uses a wide range of instructional techniques including: a balanced literacy program, facilitating the use of multiple intelligences, using hands-on inquiry based learning, integrating the curriculum to show real life connections, using cooperative learning, simulations, and active student participation. Her authentic assessment techniques underpin her daily objectives to individualize her curriculum for all students. Mrs. Shapiro's class is known as "Shapiro's Heroes!" She is most effective by creating a strong team sense among her students and their families. This team extends beyond the walls of the school as "Shapiro's Heroes" travel all over Blaine to learn about their community, discover new careers and opportunities, and find local heroes. The students also learn about citizenship and behavior expectations as they represent their school on these walking field trips. The "Shapiro's Heroes" theme is woven throughout the year, as the students recite the Student Pledge of Success daily and use these concepts when solving problems that arise. Her teaching career has also brought her a variety of accolades and awards. Besides the 2005 Blaine School District and 2006 ESD 189 Regional Teacher of the Year awards, she was awarded the 1995 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, the 1994 Washington State Conservation Teacher of the Year, the 1991 Washington award for Excellence in Education (Christa McAuliffe Award), 1989 Oregon Reading Association Teacher of the Year, the 1988 Business and Professional Women Regional Young Careerist award, the Rachel Royston Scholarship, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Sigma State Scholarship. Robert Shapiro Ph.D - Air date: 09-18-08 Robert Shapiro is Professor Emeritus and Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Chemistry at New York University. He is author or co-author of over 125 publications, primarily in the area of DNA chemistry, and in the origin of life. In particular, he and his co-workers have studied the ways in which environmental chemicals can damage our hereditary material, causing changes that can lead to mutations and cancer. His research has been supported by numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation and other organizations. Further details can be found at the following website: http://chemistry.fas.nyu.edu/object/robertshapiro.html Professor Shapiro was born on November 28, 1935 in New York City and obtained a BS in chemistry, summa cum laude (1956) from the City College of New York He received a PhD degree in organic chemistry from Harvard, under the supervision of Nobel Laureate R.B. Woodward (1959), postdoctoral training in DNA chemistry at Cambridge with Nobel Laureate Lord Todd (1959-1960). After an additional year of postdoctoral study at the NYU Medical School, he joined the NYU Chemistry Department in 1961. He has held a Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health and has been awarded (with physicist Paul Davies) the Trotter Prize in Complexity, Information and Inference for 2004. In addition to his research, Professor Shapiro has written four books and several magazine articles for the general public. The books include: 1. "Life Beyond Earth", co-author with Gerald Feinberg, (Morrow 1980). This book advanced a very positive view about the possibilities for life elsewhere in the Universe. For example, it discussed the possibility of life in underground niches on Mars, in oceans beneath the frozen surfaces of the satellites of Jupiter, and in various environments within Titan, a satellite of Saturn. Today, these sites rank at the top of NASA's agenda, in searching for life within our Solar System. In addition, it described a number of exotic possibilities for life based on substances other than carbon or water. Timothy Ferris, commented in a front-page review in the New York Times Book Review: "Informative and authoritative yet venturesome and readable, 'Life Beyond Earth' is one of the best books on Earth about life elsewhere." The New Yorker observed: "For people who like to rerad about solid scientific speculation, this is an exhilarating, informative, and ultimately liberating book." 2. "Origins, a Skeptic's Guide to the Creation of Life on Earth", (Simon & Schuster, 1986). This work is described elsewhere in this web site. 3. "The Human Blueprint", (St. Martin's Press, 1991). This work described the current and future course of the Human Genome Project. It anticipated the use of DNA testing to resolve the Thomas Jefferson-Sally Hemings paternity question, and the Anastasia controversy, as well as the use of DNA analysis to track the historical movement of human populations. It was an alternate Book-of-the Month Club Selection for Sept. 1991, and in German translation, this book was selected by the jury "Bild am Wissenschaft" as the "Wissenschaftbuch des Jahres" (Science Book of the Year). 4. "Planetary Dreams", (Wiley, 1999). This work is described elsewhere in this web site. Professor Shapiro has commented: "obviously, I have developed a taste for very large scientific topics". When he is not involved in research, lecturing or writing, he enjoys running, hiking, wine-tastings, raquetball, and travel. He and his wife Sandra, a clinical psychologist practicing in New York, were married in 1964. Their son, Michael, born in 1971, composes music for films (http://mikemusic.com).
