Teaching Kids To Code Google Tech Talks March, 7 2008 ABSTRACT Learning to code has become both more important and more complicated in the last decade. We need to make it attractive and easy again. Most western countries currently experience a shortage of skilled computing professionals in the employment market. We have seen a similar problem in the 1990s, but this time the situation is different: While the problem in the 90s was university capacity (we just couldn't educate enough people quickly enough), this time around it is enrolment: Universities have the capacity, but not enough students sign up to study technical, computing related subjects, such as computer science or software engineering. The real problem lies before university: at school age, students decide against computing as a subject, because it is perceived as geeky, tedious, intellectually not challenging, and most of all boring. At the same time, programming in schools is on a sharp decline. We need to counter this trend by bringing programming back into schools, and make it an engaging, challenging, relevant and enjoyable activity. To be successful, the public sector, academia and business should work together to make this happen. At the University of Kent, we have developed two successful development environments, named BlueJ and Greenfoot, and educational material to address these challenges. In this presentation, we will discuss both, with the main focus on Greenfoot, a system for beginners to learn Java programming through development of interactive graphical applications. Greenfoot and its associated materials can be used to teach programming in schools, computer clubs, or to your own children. Kids develop computer games, and -- almost as an aside -- learn object- oriented programming in Java. In this talk, I will present the software, strategies for learning of programming, and the benefits and drawback of Java as a first language. Speaker: Michael Kölling, Computing Laboratory, University Michael Kölling is the lead designer of the BlueJ and Greenfoot programming environments. Both environments are designed for beginners to learn the basics of Java, and are widely used by schools and universities all over the world. Michael is also the founder of the Sun Center of Excellence in Object-Oriented Education at the University of Kent. He works as a Senior Lecturer in the Computing Laboratory at the University of Kent, where he teaches Java to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and is co-author of a successful Java textbook, "Objects First With Java." E-teaching Can you teach music over the Internet? How? Can you teach with Youtube? Nirvana? Piczo? Audacity? Billboard? Newsfeeds? Can you teach in a way that is engaging for the learner? What does it mean to be a learner-centered teacher of music in a technology-mediated context? I created this video to answer this question. The video is a knowledge mobilization outcome that is part of of a collaborative inquiry in which Andrew Mercer(the teacher profiled in the video) and Andrea Rose, School of Music, Memorial University are participating. The project is funded through a grant for a Community University Research Alliance (CURA) on e-learning from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canada. Visit http://www.killickcentre.ca for the project information. To discuss learner-centeredness of teaching with technology, visit http://www.learnercenteredeteaching.blogspot.com/ On a technical note, the original file was well in excess of the allowable 100 megs. I uploaded the converted wmv file of 17 megs to youtube which converts it to a swf-flash file. Unfortunately swf does not render the transitions very well. You can view youtube videos of the e-teacher profiled in the video if you search under buckydurddle. We have been relying on youtube to conduct reflective sessions and conversations about learner-centeredness in teaching. Why youtube? because it is a symbol of user-centeredness and of the democratisation of knowledge. Youtube is a part of the WEB 2.0 which provides so many tools for social knowledge construction and sharing (Blogs, Wikis, podcasting etc). Social knowledge construction and sharing is, I believe, at the heart of learner-centeredness. Teaching Creationism in Schools Creationists all over the country are trying to push creationism into schools and package it as science under the guise of Intelligent Design. The National Center for Science Education is here to put out those fires and keep religion out of our public school science classrooms. We are here to call out Ben Stein and his ludicrous ideas that are the spotlight of his new movie Expelled, about Intelligent Design. Expelled is a manipulation of lies that repackages religious creationism as Intelligent Design and teaches it as science in public schools. We must stand up to keep religion out of our public schools' science education. Go to www.ExpelledExposed.com to find out more! The Visiting Teaching Movie This is the "official" version of the ever so popular Visiting Teaching Movie. I'm so happy that people are able to find inspiration in this video. It has COMPLETELY surpassed my expectations. This was supposed to be a simple video for my ward, but through the power of technology, it is now being seen by Church memebers around the world. I encourage you all to use this in your lesson, I really have only one request: PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS YOUTUBE VERSION IN YOUR LESSONS. The quality is so poor, that it makes me cringe knowing that people are using it. Soon, we will be launching a new website where you can download this video and burn to DVD or sync to your iPod. THANKS: Thank you to mormonweb.tv, who has posted this video under their account until I could get my act together. They have done a lot to encourage people to watch. Their video will continue to be posted for at least a few more weeks. ---------------------- UPDATE: I am still working on getting a website together, but in the meantime you can download either the MP4 (for iPod) or the .ISO file, which can be burned to a DVD from any standard CD/DVD Burning software, here: http://drop.io/visit Comment if you need help with burning the .ISO to DVD. WINDOWS: you should just be able to add it to Roxio or Nero. You can also download the FREE IMGBURN software, which I know will burn the file. MAC: you'll need to change the .ISO extension to .IMG and then double click to moount the image, then burn with Disk Utility. Teaching in a Digital Age Teaching in a Digital Age: How Should Technologies Shape Our Learning Space and Pedagogical Practices? According to a recent YouTube video, a student today will read 2,300 Web pages and 1,281 Facebook profiles this year, and 8 books. He or she will write 42 pages for class assignments this semester, and more than 500 pages of e-mail. Having grown up immersed in technologies such as the Internet, iPods, PDAs and cell phones, most of today's undergraduates are "digital natives" and so enter our classrooms with different experiences, expectations and learning styles than previous generations of students. This workshop will explore some of the challenges and opportunities provided by technology and the students who use it. Many of today's Web technologies can be powerful tools for creating effective, engaging learning environments, yet some argue that the use of such technologies in the classroom is problematic in various ways. For example, handling different levels of technological expertise or different access to technological devices on the part of different students may be challenging, as may a faculty member's own skill and comfort level with various technologies. To what extent are faculty responsible for learning about and using these new technologies, and to what extent should they (or should they not) coax students away from technology for certain purposes, such as increasing their attention spans, introducing different modes of learning, or just simply reading pages from a book? Join us for a lively discussion of these and other issues around the use of digital technologies in the classroom. Panelists: Patricia Armstrong, Assistant Director, Center for Teaching; Jay Clayton, William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of English; Matt Hall, Assistant Vice Chancellor for ITS Co-sponsored by the Center for Ethics. Teaching Vietnam (trailer) Dr. Robert Arnoldt and Dr. James Brask, the two subjects of the film, are Vietnam vets who co-teach a college class about the Vietnam War. They met in the early 1990s as professors (one in history and the other political science) and developed a class about the history and politics of the Vietnam War. Their work with students, in and out of the classroom, will be used to relate the story of this difficult war and to tell the complex story of their very different experiences as soldiers and veterans. Dr. Arnoldt served at the beginning of the war (1965-1967), and Dr. Brask served near the end (1970-1971). Although their experiences were markedly dissimilar, they both found their path to reconciliation confirmed through teaching. In their classes they compare and contrast their war experiences and their sometimes-opposing opinions. The dynamic relationship of Brask and Arnoldt energizes these classes and makes them fascinating to watch. They regularly invite guest speakers to illustrate the wide breadth of the Vietnam experience and the variety of opinion on the subject. Guests in their classes have included American veterans, Vietnamese veterans, and anti-war activists such as Bernadine Dorn, a member of the Weathermen who was on the FBI most wanted list for 11 years. All guest speakers are being interviewed for the film.
