Independent Truckers Protest High Gas Prices You may have noticed fewer big rigs on the highway Tuesday. It's because some of the nation's independent truckers are parking them instead of driving them. Truck drivers are protesting the sky-high cost of diesel fuel. Truckers can pay up to $1,000 for just one fill-up, which is about $300 more than this time last year. There are about 500,000 independent truckers nationwide. A truck driver in Carrollton, Mo., told KMBC's Jere Gish that he shut down his operation for the day. In a complaint posted online, he blamed high gas prices for Tuesday's protest. Some drivers said they're doing OK with the fuel costs because of surcharges that are added to shipping costs. Other truck drivers complained that middlemen are pocketing most of that extra money, so that they see little of it. The surcharges mean that the consumer will pay more for items in the stores. Truck drivers said they want lawmakers to step in and do something to keep gas prices lower. Truck drivers also protested gas price during the Arab oil embargo in the early 1970s, and some said they're frustrated that 35 years later, things still haven't improved.
