We don't know how the cars are tuned or which driver has the better hole-shot technique, but we're calling our street race in favor of the Vette. You see, there's no historical basis for a close Corvette-Mustang rivalry. A Corvette of any year is a little too fast and smart to be street racing ratty muscle cars. It's a real sports car, the kind of car that's still fun when you start going around corners. But maybe it's a different story with this 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR and 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Each of these rear-wheel-drive coupes has a V8 rated for more than 500 horsepower at the flywheel. And with the release of the limited-edition 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR, Ford has moved in on Chevrolet's price territory. The GT500KR leaves the Ford factory as a $46,730 GT500 coupe and is shipped as a rolling chassis to Carroll Shelby's facility near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada. By the time the KR cruises out of Shelby's shop, it's an $82,395 Mustang. As such, the King-of-the-Road Mustang must now contend with this $76,920 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. And though the Z06 is a few horsepower shy of the upcoming ZR1, it's not an easy mark. The GT500KR will have to play like a sports car just to keep up. I don't know about you, but I love that." It's the kind of excitement I'm used to hearing from truly motivated Prius owners. By any standard, the hydrogen-fueled Chevy Equinox fuel cell electric vehicle qualifies as alternative-fuel exotica, as rare and fascinating as it is expensive and impractical. You can call it the 2008 Chevrolet Equinox FCEV (FCEV as in fuel cell electric vehicle), but this is no production vehicle. Only General Motors knows what it costs to build these SUVs, but each of these prototypes is probably worth the equivalent of 10 Tesla Roadsters. For the next 72 hours, though, I'm going to drive our Chevrolet Equinox FCEV test vehicle like it's an ordinary, $30,000 Chevy Equinox LTZ. Of course, the FCEV's 150-mile range prevents me from leaving the green dreamland of Southern California. A Chevrolet dealership will probably never be more than five miles away, and specially trained OnStar advisors are waiting to take my call. As a participant in the hydrogen-powered GM Project Driveway, I even have my own Driver Relationship Manager. She tells me I can call her cell any time, day or night. GM's bread-and-butter brand insists that it is making a "strong design statement" with its global vehicle. "Our goal in designing Cruze was to be bold, not evolutionary," said Taewan Kim, Cruze chief designer, in a statement. "We wanted to take a big step forward, making a strong design statement for Chevrolet products around the world." Chevrolet detailed its launch plans for the car, saying that it will debut in Europe in March 2009, followed by other global markets "with regional-specific engine choices." At the same time, General Motors on Thursday confirmed that it will build the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze at its Lordstown, Ohio, facility after a multibillion-dollar investment there. Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager, told WJR-AM in Detroit on Thursday that the Cruze will "sell in over 100 countries. "The market is red hot for small vehicles," he said. Peper also described the Cruze as a "smaller version of [the Chevrolet] Malibu. "It's wider and longer than most of the small cars out there," he said. In a statement, Chevrolet said that the Cruze will be launched in Europe with 112-horsepower 1.6-liter and 140-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engines, along with a new 150-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel. The engines are linked to a five-speed manual transmission or Chevrolet's first six-speed automatic transmission in the compact segment. The exterior design cues on the Cruze include a sculpted hood and two-tier grille. "Inside, Cruze features a 'twin cockpit' design motif, first introduced in the iconic Corvette sports car," said Chevrolet. The Cruze is the replacement for the Chevrolet Cobalt. It will be the first vehicle to use GM's revamped Delta 2 platform, an architecture that will be used on all GM small cars around the globe, including replacements for the Chevrolet HHR and the Opel Zafira and its related siblings. Beth Lowery, GM's vice president of environment, energy and safety policy, told the Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, Michigan, earlier this month that the Cruze will get better gas mileage than the Cobalt.
