Pee-Wee Practice This is just some footage I had on tape of me rehearsing a "Magic Show" act in the style of Pee-Wee Herman. I was practicing an act to perform at the Next Best Thing auditions and it should get some air time on ABC, Wednesday, June 20 at 8pm Eastern/7pm Central. It's pretty funny if you have a couple of minutes to spare. There are a few cuts as this was put together from two separate filmings done back to back, so that's why it's choppy at a couple points. Steve Vai - "K'm-Pee-Du-Wee" (Teaser) Performing in countries through Eastern Europe is an adventure. We usually travel over night to the next city after the previous gig. In this situation we were coming from a gig in Vilnius, Lithuania and driving overnight for a day off in Katowice Poland. The day after that we had a show scheduled for Zabrze, Poland. The video goals on the Real Illusions tour (among some other colorful celluloid exploits) was to capture a unique kind of performance for each song on the Real Illusions CD. Since "K'm-Pee-Du-Wee" was already released on a G3 DVD from Japan, I wanted to offer a different type of performance video other than a live concert setting for that song. Never having been to Katowice Poland (oddly enough), I thought it would be a cool idea to just show up and set up a little trio combo somewhere outside of the hotel in the street, unannounced, and just jam on K'm-Pee. The band and crew were real sports about it. Mike Mesker shot some entertaining footage and although the equipment we used to perform with looked a little anemic, it was mic'ed properly and heavily EQ-ed so the sound we captured is actually pretty good. We just jammed through the song a few times and I cut it together. I think it turned out charming with some striking moments. Pee Wee King - Slow Poke (1951) SLOW POKE is credited to three writers: Pee Wee King, Redd Stewart, and Chilton Price. Actually Price wrote the song in 1951, as she thought the song described her friend, King, very well. King recorded the song and Stewart did the vocal. Price gave rights to the other two in exchange for publicity, as she felt she knew nothing about the music distribution business. The song did so well commercially that when Price wrote the song "You Belong to Me" the next year, she felt she could do better by ceding partial credit for authorship to King and Stewart than trying to publicize the song herself, so that song as well was credited to King, Stewart, and Price, though Price was the sole author. The recording by Pee Wee King was released by RCA Victor Records as catalog number 21-0489 (78rpm) and 48-0489 (45 rpm). It first reached the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart on October 21, 1951 and lasted 22 weeks on the chart, peaking at #3. It was his only crossover from the country genre to score on the pop chart. He was born in Milwaukee to a Polish American family and lived in Abrams, Wisconsin, during his youth. King learned to play fiddle from his father, who was a professional polka musician. In the 1930s, he toured and made cowboy movies with Gene Autry. King joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1937. In 1946, while the bandleader of the Golden West Cowboys, King, together with the band's vocalist, Redd Stewart, composed "THE TENNESSEE WALTZ", a song inspired by "THE KENTUCKY WALTZ" by bluegrass musician Bill Monroe. King and Stewart first recorded "The Tenneesee Waltz" in 1948, and it went on to become a country music standard. King's other songs included "SLOW POKE" and "YOU BELONG TO ME".
