Mike Huckabee: Speech 12/20/08 Mike Huckabee Speech Manchester, IA TRANSCRIPT: MIKE HUCKABEE: [to college student] First of all, if we dont do anything about Social Security, there wont be enough for you so I hope you have another plan. You need a Plan B. We can take care of the people who are getting into the system right now but theres going to come a point where the younger people paying in, it wont work. And there are several key factors; and the first one is when the Social Security system was developed it was developed based on actuarial tables that said that you would retire at 65 but the life expectancy is 67 years old, so the actuarial tables said you retire at 65 at 67 you would die so we have about a two year obligation, you would pay in for 40 years, we would pay you back for two . . . people started living longer you know and just messed up the whole thing . . . so it looks like the only other option is that we have to, sort of, make the system realistic. And heres the secondary problem: right now, we have fewer and fewer people in America who actually earn their money by wages and the current Social Security system is funded by wages, not just by the overall economy, second thing is we have more people getting into the system . . . baby boomers are retiring at the rate of 10,000 a day . . . wait until all those aging hippies find out they can get free drugs when they retire . . . this is not a Republican or a Democrat problem . . . and several things that will start fixing it. One, change the way we fund it . . . itll be funded out of the general fund . . . another thing is to come up with creative ways so that those of us who are getting near the Social Security age have some options. Let me give you an example: many of us have probably made plans that say that we know that Social Security is not going to be enough to completely sustain us so we have pensions, retirement plans, 401(k) . . . we may not need the monthly check from Social Security to get by but nobodys going to just say well, dont send me the check after all . . . but what if the government gave you an option for a one-time cash buyout . . . ? . . . its your money, you can take it . . . the President had the right idea and I commend him for it, he was courageous to go out and try to push it. The one big change would be, he used a word that scared the daylights out of most Americans. He used the word privatization . . . looking at the corruption in the corporate world its not an easy sell . . . I believe that while its not going to be easy the solutions are within our grasp. McCain Given A Short Life Expectancy Employment Crossing A report released by an actuarial firm, Bragg Associates, was backed by the Associated Press after a life expectancy calculator was used to estimate the number of years senator John McCain may have left to live. According to the report, Senator McCain, who is currently at age 72, has a one in four chance of being unable to serve two presidential terms totaling eight years. While it is fair to say that either candidate could be unable to serve more than one term in office for whatever reason, should McCain become elected he would be the oldest president to begin a first term in office ever. The firm estimates that McCain would have a 24.44 percent chance of dying by the end of his second term in January of 2017, compared to Senator Barak Obamas 5.76 percent chance of death. The report continues by taking both candidates health into consideration and uses actuarial sciences to calculate the number of healthy years both candidates have ahead of them. The firm estimates that Obama can look forward to another 21.9 years of health, while McCains health expectancy is a mere 8.4 years. The firm admits that no matter how sophisticated their technology may be, no one can actually calculate the amount of time an individual has to live. These statistical calculations are traditionally made for insurance companies and are based on large numbers and figures. For more information, click here. CT Uses IT to Match Jobs with Students A new data analysis software system in Connecticut searches online job listings in order to help colleges identify the skills students need to find jobs in today's market. The project uses a web crawler that scours online listings in the financial services and insurance industries, then sends that information to specialized software built specifically for this effort. Ultimately, the data collected is sent to colleges to help them develop relevant curriculum for their job-seeking students. The state of Connecticut used part of a $2.7 million US Department of Labor training grant to develop what is seen as a model project for other states. The state called upon Skillproof, a Bridgeport, CT based labor research organization, for its web crawling technology with data analytics software designed by IBM, Pace University of New York.. Already, the project has proven to be worthwhile. The data collected by the software showed that there were a large number of unfilled openings for high-paying insurance actuarial jobs. When looking for actuaries, employers look primarily for analytic and communication skills. With this information in hand, Connecticut schools were able to respond immediately by expanding their curriculum to teach the specific skills associated with actuarial work. Developers of this software system hope that the success in Connecticut will encourage other states to utilize the system and fill niches in all industries by identifying the skills students need to find high-paying jobs in today's market.
