A New Approach to Design of Massively Parallel Systems Google Tech Talks August 13, 2008 ABSTRACT Based on insights derived from theory of global optimization, we have made a major breakthrough in physical design of several massively parallel systems. These include: New design of parallel supercomputers based on massively parallel quantum tunneling, electron optics and finite projective geometry. This approach overcomes the bandwidth and latency obstacle faced by other contemporary designs. Other advantages include large improvement in teraflops per kilowatt, significant reduction in programming complexity and broad applicability to many domains, including those requiring a lot of pointer chasing. Our design can be implemented using known fabrication techniques. New design of low latency, multi-ported secondary storage based on magneto-optics that implements shared memory directly at physical level. This feature is highly valuable to business data bases as well as applications requiring frequent shared access to massive amounts of common data such as google earth. New design of high bandwidth switches required for building next generation internet infrastructure. Speaker: Narendra Karmarkar Dr. Karmarkar received his B.Tech at the IIT Bombay in 1978. Later, he received his M.S. at the California Institute of Technology, and his Ph.D. at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He published his famous result in 1984 while he was working for Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. Karmarkar was a professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay. Speaker: Terence Taylor Terence Taylor is the Director of the ICLS and the Chairman of its Board of Directors. He has held leadership positions at The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the United Kingdom 's Ministry of Defense and the United Nations. Mr Taylor established the US office of the IISS and served as its first President and Executive Director for 5 years. He was a career officer in the British army with experience in many parts of the world including UN peacekeeping and counter-terrorist operations. He is an expert in international security policy, with a special emphasis in risk assessment and non-proliferation. Mr. Taylor served as the co-director of the project entitled "Safeguarding the Advances and Managing the Risks: the Future of the Life Sciences" during his time at IISS -- US. This effort, over the period of three years, led to the emergence of the International Council for the Life Sciences as an independent organization to help develop and promote global biosafety and biosecurity standards. He serves on the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Forum on Microbial Threats and is an adviser to the International Committee of the Red Cross. Mr. Taylor was also a member of the National Research Council Steering Committee on Genomic Databases for Bioterrorism Threat Agents and served as Chairman of the Permanent Monitoring Panel on Risk Analysis of the World Federation of Scientists. Terence Taylor is a regular contributor to a variety of publications including The Washington Quarterly, International Herald Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal, in addition to authoring numerous book chapters on humanitarian law and biological weapons. He frequently conducts television and radio interviews on the major national and international broadcasting networks including CNN, BBC, and NPR. In October 2006, Mr. Taylor was appointed to the five-member special advisory group for the UN Secretary-General's initiative on biotechnology. Speaker: Rafe Sagarin Rafe Sagarin is Associate Director for Ocean and Coastal Policy at the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University . Rafe is a marine ecologist who has studied responses of marine communities and wetlands to climate change, illegal fishing, pollution and other human impacts. He received his doctorate from the University of California, Santa Barbara where he studied the large scale distribution of marine organisms on the Pacific coast of North America. He has served as a Geological Society of America Congressional Science Fellow in the office of U.S. Representative Hilda Solis. He has also convened a working group and is publishing a volume on using biological evolution as a guide for improving societal security systems. Rafe has taught ecology and global change science and policy at California State University Monterey Bay and at University of California , Los Angeles . His research has appeared in Science, Nature, Ecological Monographs, Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Foreign Policy and other leading journals. A Formal Approach for Developing Reliable Service-based Systems Google Tech Talks November, 29 2007 ABSTRACT Service-based systems are increasingly being used for deploying large-scale applications in mission-critical environments. In such a system, applications are built by combining services, which are platform independent components running on different hosts of a wireless network. Prime concerns in such systems include, among others, adaptability to unforeseen situations (e.g., behaviors of services can be modified due to unforeseen events such as node failures or distributed denial of service attacks), situation-awareness (in order to detect changes in the environment and adapt accordingly) and security. In this talk, we present a formal approach to developing adaptable, situation-aware, secure service-based distributed systems. To this end, we first present a process calculus-based programming model for such systems. The operational semantics of the model combines external behaviors with internal computation for accessing current situation and dynamically adapting and reacting to it. Continuation passing is used for handling asynchronous service invocations. In order to declaratively specify properties of such systems, we introduce an intuitionistic hybrid modal logic. The logic not only has modalities for expressing both temporal and spatial behavior but also constructs for describing communication and knowledge and atomic formulas for describing relations between variables. We show how intelligent agents can be automatically synthesized from declarative specifications in the logic and deployed wirelessly. In order to deploy the synthesized agents, we have developed, jointly with the Naval Research Laboratory, the Secure Infrastructure for Networked Systems (SINS), a middleware platform built on the top of JHU's Spread group communication toolkit. In the last part of the talk, we provide a demo of a mission-critical application for intelligent management of a power system developed using the approach mentioned above and deployed on the SINS platform. E3 2008 Summary: A Positive Approach In this video, I give my thoughts on Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony's keynotes at E3 2008. I was saddened by the lack of substance in each of the keynotes. I wrote about this last year on bwana.org and hoped things would improve this year. Unfortunately, all of the presentations were yawn fests. Rather than repeat last year's negative tone, I tried my best to find the positive things of each keynote. For Microsoft, I was impressed by their dashboard update and avatar system, and obviously I was floored by Final Fantasy XIII's move to the Xbox 360. For Nintendo, Wii motion Plus and Wii Music were positive highlights, while Sony's PSN video offerings and announcement of MAG. I'm hoping next year's E3 will be much better than this poor offering.
