Athletics Politics - Michael Johnson Interview Michael Johnson being interviewed by Sue Barker on BBC Television on 24th March 2006, Day 9 of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. The British 4 x 100m Relay squad had just failed to get the baton around. The text over the interview has been added to emphasise that UK Athletics are the problem. Athletics in the United Kingdom is contested under UK Athletics rules. As administrators, UK Athletics should maintain a role of strict impartiality between athletes, yet they fund some and not others based on subjective criteria. They assist some with medical support and not others. The very existence of UK Athletics undermines the bedrock of fairness and equality for all in athletics. They contaminate the environment have been shown in the long term to harm more than they help the athletes they seek to assist. The AAA of England were the guardians of the sport's values in England. UK Sport and Sport England forced the effective closure of the AAA's and have created a "Son of" UK Athletics, called England Athletics who will do as they are told, and have responsibility for developing talent. What business does any governing body have in identifying and developing talent, unless it develops all talent equally. Athletes must be allowed to emerge naturally, based on equality and fairness in competition. If funding is available, it must be distributed based solely on results in the national championships in a transparent way, not as the result of an interview or the recommendations of a senior coach. See: www.british-athletics.co.uk SLASH foster SLASH altern.pdf for a paper presenting the way forward for the sport of athletics. Tags: Athletics Politics Michael Johnson UK Sport England |

Cal Athletics in Beijing - Part 3 Jigar Mehta, a UC Berkeley alum, is in Beijing and capturing a behind the scenes look of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Here are some of his notes that correspond to the video. For more updates and information, please visit http://calbears.com ----------- Beijing is an enormous town that sprawls in every direction, so you think you would never run into a familiar face. My friend, an entertainment reporter, invited me to join him at the Speedo Parents' Meet and Greet, an opportunity for the press to meet the parents of swimmers sponsored by Speedo. The room was a buzz over Momma Phelps, whose son won another Gold medal that morning. I spotted the Coughlins on the eve of their daughter marquee event, the 100 meter backstroke. While her world record was broken a few hours earlier, they were confidant that Natalie was poised to break it again. Tags: Cal Athletics UC Berkeley Golden Bears Summer Olympics Beijing |

Cal Athletics In Beijing - Natalie Coughlin (Part 6) Jigar Mehta, a University of California alumnus, is in Beijing capturing a behind-the-scenes look at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In today's video feature, he talks to former Cal swimming star Natalie Coughlin, who won six medals in Beijing to set a record for most medals by a U.S. female in one Olympic Games. ------------------ Natalie Coughlin Interview: Well, the swimmers are finally out of the pool and hitting the Olympic party scene. Last night (Sunday) was the famous Speedo Party, which takes place the night of the last day of swimming. All the stars of the pool from Michael Phelps to Dara Torres came, as did Cal's very own six-time medalist in Beijing, Natalie Coughlin. With 11 Olympic medals, Natalie shares the honor with Matt Bondi as being Cal's most decorated Olympian. Natalie looked cool and calm and ready to celebrate with the rest of the U.S. swim team in attendance. She'll be taking a little time off before setting her sites on London in 2012. Cal Athletics in Beijing - Olympic Village (Part 7) Jigar Mehta, a UC Berkeley alum, is in Beijing and capturing a behind the scenes look of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Here are some of his notes that correspond to the video. For more updates and information, please visit http://calbears.com ----------------- It's probably the most talked about place at the Olympic Games, and you can't scalp a ticket to get in, it's for Olympians only. The Olympic village is truly a mini village with housing for 16000 people, a massive dining hall, and lots of entertainment options for the athletes. However, the best part of the village is the opportunity to meet athletes from around the world, if your clever you could make enough friends that you would never have to pay for another hotel room when you travel! Everyone wants to know what it is like on the inside, and since I couldn't get into the village I gave Martin Maric (Discus-Crotia) and Amin Nikfar (Shot Put-Iran) a video camera for a day. China's Soviet-Style Athletics CHEN: The Beijing Olympics brought concerns from many groups that China's poor human rights record was being overlooked. However, they have also brought into China's state-run sporting system, and the often-disturbing lifestyles it imposes on its athletes. Here's more. STORY: Chinese Olympic diver Guo Jingjing won two gold medals at the Bejing Olympics, added to previous wins in Athens. But she suffers from a number of health issues, including eyesight problems rumored to be so severe that she can hardly see the diving board as she competes. She had announced plans to retire after this year's Games, but it's not clear whether she will ever recover her vision. The damage is said to be caused by her intense training. She began diving competitively at age six, before her retina were fully developed. Guo's fellow Olympic diver Chen Ruolin is 15 years old and weighs a just 66 pounds. Her state-appointed coach ordered her to skip dinner for one year leading up to the Games so she could stay thin and make a smaller splash when she hit the water. Such stories abound in a country where top-level athletes are usually chosen at extremely young ages, based on body type, and placed in intensive, state-run training programs to prepare them for eventual Olympic competition. They train all day, everyday in an environment many athletes in the West might consider harsh—or even abusive. But for those in China's athletic system, which is inspired by the Soviet Union, it's just the way of life demanded by the Communist Party. But not all of the athletes' suffering is physical. Gold-medal weightlifter Cao Lei was so cut-off from the outside world that no one told her that her mother was dying. She only found out two months after the funeral, and never had a chance to say goodbye. Gold-winner in judo Xian Dongmei said she had not been able to see her own 18-month-old daughter for over a year. While Olympians from other countries might speak of getting back to their normal lives after the Games, many Chinese athletes will be returning to the camps that have housed them since they were children, away from family and friends, and without the chance to develop any hobbies or outside interests. It is the price they pay in order to realize the Chinese Communist Party calls the "patriotic duty" of getting more gold medals than the United States.
