JAMES O TOOLE BALCONYTV.COM 21/08/2006 James O' Toole is a well known Dublin street musician who has decided to start working on getting his numerous original songs out to other musicians and the public. James was born in Dublin's Fatima Mansions flats complex. James has been writing songs for many years and has taught himself to play numerous instruments. "Music has been and will always be my rope if i ever feel like i'm going under, i feel like i've built up so much anger and fire in my belly because of the state of the world, maybe because of where i grew up, but music is the soothing balm, it's my release valve, it stops me from exploding!...in the last year i've really felt that i've been discovering my voice gaining the range i needed to express myself completely..." GREEN CARNATION BALCONYTV.COM 26/08/2006 As with its namesake blossom's first appearance, peering from beneath the permafrost of Norway's winter, each successive Green Carnation album is a welcome sight in the dreary sameness of today's metal scene. With Light of Day, Day of Darkness, the six piece format recorded one of the most ambitious (and critically praised) projects of all time, Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness. The hour-long platter is comprised solely of the title track. Recorded on 150 tracks, employs thirty musicians (including a children's choir), and more than 600 distinct samples, many reviewers were at a loss to pin down precisely what they heard, but there was no denying the brilliance within the sounds, declaring Green Carnation amongst the most innovative acts in metal's history. 2005 saw Green Carnation members Tchort and Kjetil Nordhus starting their own record-company, Sublife Productions. They signed Green Carnation, and the band recorded their very first acoustic album. NIGEL PLACE BALCONYTV.COM 16/08/2006 Currently recording songs with Len Arran as producer Nigel Place, a singer and writer of songs, Nigel first started to 'play' guitar in a metal covers band at the age of 14. Having checked out the Singer/Songwriter scene in Dublin, Nigel decided that he was no worse than the worst and first played at one of Dave Murphy's infamous tuesday nights upstairs at the International Bar, becoming a regular there and was one of the guests selected to play at the special closing shows to mark that era. Another one of the nights Nigel played often was Molloy's Open Mic in Christchurch, hosted by Ken Burke. Both of these nights saw such acts as Ken Burke, Damien Dempsey, Mundy, Paddy Casey, Declan O'Rourke, Roesy and Gemma Hayes all take the stage on a regular basis. Now after a numbers of years out spent getting to grips with being a family man, Nigel has ventured out again with a new batch of songs and a resurgent love for music and writing. SCOTT MAHER REMASTERED BALCONYTV.COM 27/09/2006 In Scotts words - I fell off my bike when I was 15 and broke my left arm and sprained my right - It was then I realised how much music meant to me 'cos I couldn't play the chord of C properly on the guitar. Music is my work and music is my love - I've been lucky enough to be in different bands and travelled far and wide, up and down and I've played some really great gigs and met some amazing people (Sir George Martin, lots of people I admire and ..... the Queen of England - weird ! I love that music makes me laugh so hard 'cos of the stuff that happens and the strangest people in the most unlikely places you meet along the way - Of course I want to sell 40 million records and be on the tip of your tongue but for me it's about the journey and not the destination and so far the journey is on the up .....I released my debut album Cartoon Moon last year to surprisingly great reviews likening it to a mix of Jeff Buckley/Beatles/Crowded House and I have two songs on movies coming out this year and early next year 07 in the USA Light Years Away and Lost On The B-Side. I spent March and April this year in New York playing in clubs with a full band and getting to know the place and playing some great gigs and getting very pleasing reviews. EBO BALCONYTV.COM 10/09/2006 With influences cited as varied as, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, Pearl Jam and The Beatles, and from Beethoven through to Crosby Stills & Nash, Nick Drake and David Kitt. Ebo's music has been described as alternative rock, still keeping in touch with their acoustic roots and giving particular attention to dynamics and the structure of their songs. Based in Dublin, Ebo have been gigging regularly in venues around town, and playing on local radio stations. To date, they have produced two demo EPs of 5 tracks each. Ebo are a hard working, new young band with a unique and original approach to the music they create. Through each of their songs can be seen a direct line of artistic progression and development. In which all parts and instrumentation are combined to get the full benefit of harmonies, counter-melodies and other musical features. The band was formed inSummer 2004, since they have been writing, recording, and working hard to produce the sound they now have. Last year saw the band play support to many of Irelands prominent leading acts, such as Stoneocean, Jalopy, Mainline and The Shakes, and develop an ever growing loyal fan base. Ebo's live shows are intense, energetic and passionate, yet always conscious of still maintaining the subtleties of their carefully crafted sound. Prompting one critic to write "...The night was polished off perfectly by a new band [Ebo] Their tight well rehearsed set matched The Romoanes for sheer chaotic power and energy, yet seamlessly blended a softer side, reminiscent of Nick drake..." Ebo have just finished their first recordings of 2006, with a view to releasing a two track single later in the year. Ebo will also be embarking on a short tour to promote the cd and to build on their successes of last year. ROGER GILLEN BALCONYTV.COM 6/10/2006 In Rogers own words - I grew up in the Hazelwood, in Co. Sligo. On a perfect spring morning in 1980, I auditioned for The National Talent Search of Ireland. What happens next becomes my own piece of history as I ended up winning the talent search. On a Saturday night in April 1981, the final was broadcast on Gay Byrne's Late Late Show. After a stint with Maureen Potter at the Gaeity Theater in Dublin and a pantomime at the Cork Opera House, I was bound for America. I met Mignon, a dancer from New Orleans. It was 1986 when we married and packed up the trunk again for the "Big Apple". I took any job I could while playing the round of open-mike nights in Greenwich Village. After landing an agent I toured the college circuit in the 90's and managed to get myself reviewed as Rookie of the Year in Rolling Stone Magazine. Then in January, 1993, our first son Michael arrived. But Michael's time with us was to be short and when he passed away we were broken-hearted. And a year later, as if an angel coming to heal our pain, Daniel was born. But when Daniel was only four weeks old we learned that this little angel was blind. Thankfully, in this world of contradictions, something called "Grace" took us by the hand and led us along. So I learned that the most precious thing we can offer each other is our true selves. And once I started I didn't stop until I was performing a show called Love's Pure Light on an Off-Broadway Stage. With musicians and dancers from places as far away as Cameroon, Brazil and Puerto Rico, Loves Pure Light was a breath of joy. And so, here I am at the end of 2006, with a sense that "anything is possible" again. I have Mignon, Daniel, and now Gabriel too. A family in New York and Ireland, a circle of friends and teachers who continue to believe in me. Presented by Tom Millett Loves Pure Light DVD goes on sale in stores throughout Ireland on October 20th. COLM LYNCH BALCONYTV.COM 01/09/2006 Colm Lynch is one of the very few singer-songwriters out there who one can truly expect to be the next big thing. Colm Lynch is a native of Killiney in Dublin and has been writing songs since his early teens. Now in his twenties, he has quietly established himself as a prolific and talented songwriter. No one else is currently writing material of this quality. Strong clear melodies and lyrics as up to date as todays headlines, sometimes uncomfortable, sometimes darkly comic. Playing innumerable live gigs throughout Dublin and the east coast, his distinctive guitar style has been described as both impressive and aggressive. Add to that his exceptional singing voice with its power and range and the package is complete. During the nineties, Colm played with various bands and also picked up a number of talent contest wins, including the Wicklow Song Contest in 1999. He recorded a number of his songs for the first time in 2003 and, although done primarily for gigs, it picked up airplay from among others John Creedon on RTE Radio 1. Later, in 2005, he independently released a four track EP featuring the single Why Must I Apologise, described by Dublin Singer Songwriter.com as ..a masterpiece. Now, Colm Lynch is set to bring his incredible talent to a mass audience with a recording deal through Universal Musics independent affiliate label Xcentury. The first single The Storm is due April 21st with his debut album A Whisper In A Riot planned for the summer of 2006. KARAC FROM STONE OCEAN BALCONYTV.COM 23/09/2006 STONEOCEAN are a 3 piece based in Kildare. Their music is a combo of dance beats and tricks mixed with rock guitar and licks, and they are currently touring their debut album "STONEOCEAN" which is out on american indie label Ghost Train Records. The band nearly had some bad news recently when Glenn Cummins (Bass) was almost killed in a road accident near their house in Celbridge, Kildare. The bands Mercedes Benz spun out of control on a run to the shops for some eggs after a late night show, and collided with a tree and a phone box. Luckily he was not badly hurt but the car was demolished. Karac (Vox and Guitar) and Al(Drums) have subsequently got Glenn a hair band to keep his mammoth wig out of his eyes while driving..... With all that on board and the success they had around the country with the first single, "My Home", it seemed only natural that "Good News" (out sept 24th)was the next offering... During a performance at the Oxegen Festival, the trio sparked the interest of US indie label Ghost Train Records. Within a couple of months the band were signed and brought over to record their debut album in New Yorks prestigious Club House Studios with acclaimed producer Paul Murphy, following up with mastering pro Chris Athens (Cold Play, Limp Bizkit) and design artist Sean Evans (Maroon5, Aerosmith, AC/DC). The album and band have recieved critical acclaim from home press and djs with HMV selecting "one scratch away" for their playlist cd and Alison Curtis of Today fm hailing the band as one of her top bands for 2006... DESERT INN BALCONYTV.COM 17/08/2006 Formed sometime around 2004/5 by two smoking buddies, Moe and Finny, who enjoyed playing old-school blues tunes in a haze of blue smoke and had an ambition to play and rock as hard as their idols. After many many months of jamming in bedrooms and running out of Rizlas the boys decided to invest in a bong and perhaps recruit a drummer. After auditioning zero potentials an older brother dropped by who reckoned he had rhythm. And luckily, so it proved. All that was left was a vocalist, located in the form of one Kieron "Cozzie" Costello, a nearby neighbour with good taste in tunes, a good voice and most importantly, some great pot. They spent the next few months rehearsing, adopted the moniker Desert Inn, and set about getting their sound down. A mix of bayou blues and hard rock, Desert Inn are the bastard son of CCR and The Datsuns and aim to spend 2006 further refining this sound and bringing it to an appreciating audience.
