More information about Christopher Hitchens (from Wikipedia): Christopher Eric Hitchens (born April 13, 1949, in Portsmouth, England) is an Anglo-American author, journalist and literary critic. Currently living in Washington, D.C., he has been a columnist at Vanity Fair, The Nation, Slate and Free Inquiry; additionally, he is an occasional contributor to other publications and has appeared regularly in the Wall Street Journal. His brother is British journalist Peter Hitchens. Hitchens is known for his iconoclasm, anti-clericalism, atheism, antitheism, anti-fascism and anti-monarchism. He is also noted for his acerbic wit and his noisy departure from the Anglo-American political left. He was formerly a Trotskyist and a fixture in the left wing publications of Britain and America. But a series of disagreements beginning in the early 1990s led to his resignation from The Nation shortly after the September 11, 2001, attacks. He is also known for his ardent admiration of George Orwell and Thomas Jefferson, and his iconoclastic criticism of Mother Teresa. While Hitchens' idiosyncratic ideas and positions preclude easy classification, he is a vociferous critic of what he describes as "fascism with an Islamic face," and his critics have been known to describe him as a "neoconservative". Hitchens, however, refuses to embrace this designation. In 2004, Hitchens stated that neoconservative support for US intervention in Bosnia and Iraq convinced him that he was "on the same side as the neo-conservatives" when it came to contemporary foreign policy issues. He has also been known to refer to his association with "temporary neocon allies". Hitchens no longer considers himself a Trotskyist or a socialist; yet he maintains that his political views have not changed significantly. He points out that, throughout his career, he has been both an atheist and an antitheist, and that he has always remained a believer in the Enlightenment values of secularism, humanism and reason. Hitchens has launched a detailed attack on Religion in his book god Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. He has also stated that, while he "was very much in rebellion against the state" during his youth, he is now "much more inclined to stress... issues of individual liberty." LOLOLOLOL newshoundsDOTus writes: Big props to Alan Colmes for pointing out the similarities between John Edwards' infidelity and John McCain's and asking why Edwards is unfit for public office as a result but McCain is not. After soundly denouncing Edwards as unworthy of the presidency because he broke his marriage vows to an ailing wife, none of the conservatives could come up with a decent explanation about why McCain's similar behavior was any less despicable. Sean Hannity was so flustered that he repeatedly tried to interrupt Colmes and carried the argument over to the next segment. More props to Colmes for refusing to back down. With video. In an unbalanced panel, the three conservatives (two guests plus Hannity) worked themselves into a self-righteous lather of sanctimony against John Edwards that included attacks on the so-called liberal media for not going after him harder. It was obvious they were completely unprepared for Colmes' very apt comparison of Edwards to McCain. Chris Wilson, Republican pollster, said, "(Edwards is) running for president on moral values. His wife has been diagnosed with cancer and yet this is a man that we're going to trust of leading the free world? ...That's why this is an issue." Hannity smacked his hands together as he said, "If you can't keep a promise to your family, can't keep a promise to your wife, you're having an affair, you're lying about the affair repeatedly. Why should the American people trust you when you say you're not gonna lie to them? Why should we trust you?" "That's a great question Sean asked," Colmes said as he began his turn. To conservative Amanda Carpenter, Colmes asked, "Amanda, if that's true, you can't trust somebody who had an affair, how can we trust John McCain to be president of the United States since he cheated, by his own admission, on his first wife? He didn't keep his marital vows. He didn't keep his pledge to his first family." That's when the fireworks started. Carpenter dodged the question by saying it's an issue that has been thoroughly vetted. Wilson made the laughable claim that Edwards had attacked Clinton for cheating on his wife. Hannity had a major hissy fit (most likely because he had been caught red-handed with his own hypocrisy) and insisted that McCain's behavior should be viewed through the lens of having returned home from being a POW. The producers clanged a bell to stop the argument at the end of the show. So what's Hannity's excuse for Rudy Giuliani's infidelity? Please consider writing Hannity and asking him. I already have. Democrats Kirsten Powers and Alan Colmes (in another unbalanced panel of two conservatives to one Democrat) did a fine job of arguing that if you're going to condemn Edwards' infidelity, you have to condemn John McCain's, too. Hannity hilariously excused McCain with a melodramatic speech about his POW ordeal and then claimed that McCain "wasn't the same person when he got back, for a short period of time." But in fact, McCain's extramarital affair with now-wife Cindy occurred six years after he came home from Viet Nam and a couple of years into his stint as Navy liaison to the Senate. Meanwhile, Hannity never did explain why Rudy Giuliani should get a pass even though Giuliani had been on the show earlier that night. With video. With maximum Hanctimony, Hannity told Powers, "You can't possibly understand, nor can any of us, what it would be like to be in a POW camp for five and a half years, never knowing if you're gonna get out, getting your bones broken every day and tortured and then think you're gonna be the same person." Powers answered, "Sean, how can you make a case like that? ...He was dating Cindy McCain while he was married to somebody else. He had the capacity to date her but he can't be with his wife? That if you're a POW, you can cheat on your wife?" Hannity said, "You know what? He wasn't the same person when he got back, for a short period of time. And why can't you understand and put that in context?" Uh, maybe because he didn't hook up with Cindy until six years after he got home? According to the New York Times, McCain came home from Viet Nam in 1973. The Arizona Republic reports that McCain met Cindy Hensley (now McCain) in 1979. As this article in The Times makes clear, McCain had been working as a Navy liaison to the Senate since about 1977, two years before he met CIndy. The Times described McCain's life as a liaison: "(He sampled) life in the world's most exclusive club as he escorted its members on trips around the globe — sitting with the sultan of Oman on the floor of his desert tent, or smuggling a senator's private supply of Scotch through Saudi Arabian customs. He had found a sense of purpose in an apprenticeship to some of the Senate's fiercest cold warriors. And in Senator John G. Tower, a hawkish Texas Republican, he had found a new mentor, beginning a relationship that many compared to the bond between a father and son. It hardly sounds like someone in the throes of PTSD. In a sulky voice, Hannity ended the segment by saying, "I love how Democrats and liberals, who've never spent a day in battle or conflict don't applaud what (McCain) did for five and a half years nor did they give him any texture or context to that." Kind of the same treatment the non-serving Hannity gave veteran Kerry, eh? And, by the way, I urge everyone to email Hannity and ask him what the texture and context for Giuliani's infidelities are.
