Tactile Communication Cards & System For Deaf-Blind Beth Koenig director of deaf-blind services at OCDAC explains out the tactile communication cards and the system for communicating with the deaf-blind. http://www.deafadvocacy.org Transcript: Hi, my name is Beth Koeing. I'm the director of deaf blind services at the Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center. And today I'm going to show you our Tactile Communication System that we have for lower functioning deaf blind people. Now over here we have our board and we have different consepts and stuff represented. Now this is just the begining because we are actually going to end up having much more than this, which is why the board is so big. We're going to be having a lot more but we have to find the matterials to make the cards first. So these are... This is our places cards, they are red and have a certain shape on them. And they have texture, this happeneds to be a spoon with stuff in it which stands for cafateria. So like dorm and these are different places. This repersents different people. We have physical theripst, VI Teacher which stands for visual impaired. O & M which stands for their cane teacher. And the person cards are repersented by this shape here. I'll show those closer up later. The music keyboard, and these are all objects. TV, CD, soda, water, toy, all these diferent things. Objects are repersented by the white cards with a dome shape. These are actions. We have eat, play, clean, dress, drink. And so if they want to do something they will give us one of these cards. It's kind of like the picture exchange system, also known as PECS. And over here we have today, tommorrow, yesterday, and of course we'll have all the days of the week by the time we finish. This is to give them a kind of calendar. So we can make a calendar and show them which activity we are doing which days and what times. This is misc catagory, umm no actually I think this is the abstract concepts catagory. Cancel, Yes, No, good bye, hello, yuck. I don't know why they have this for yuck but anyways. This is the other catagory. We have birthday, hot, cold, happy, sad, these kind of express feeling, events and things that other wise don't fit in the other catagroies. That's our tactile card communication system that we have for our deaf blind people. And let me do a close up on some of these cards. Here's clean for instance. And you can see this has the shape on top of it. And then also on the back is the velcro so that it sticks to the board. Now down in this area here we will have the sign. So that people that maybe don't know the sign for that word can reinforce it. So we have 4 different ways of expressing the word clean. You have of cource the tactile repersentation, we have it in print and in braille, and then we're going to have the sign on the back. And we'll have these pretty much all over the place eventually when we get more of them. So that's our tactile communication board and hopefully I'll get to shoot another video when it's finished. Carol B. Saylor DeafBlind Artist (Part 2 of 2) Carol B. Saylor, DeafBlind Artist, talks about National Exhibits by Blind Artists and living a full life as a deafblind grandmother, mother and Art Instructor. She is an award winning artist and member of National Exhibits by Blind Artists (http://nebaart.org/). She uses Phonak hearing aids, a dog guide and her remaining senses to create beautiful artwork that is meant to be touched by hands, hearts and spirits open to seeing the world. A Brief History of NEBA National Exhibits by Blind Artists, Inc. (NEBA), is a Philadelphia-based, nonprofit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to showcasing the work of artists who are blind or visually impaired. National Exhibits by Blind Artists was founded in Philadelphia in the belief that talented blind artists deserve the same recognition as writers, musicians and other sighted artists. The primary objectives are to educate the public with the quality of work by blind artists and to create a demand in the professional field of art, furthering the careers of blind artists and making them part of the mainstream of life. Several blind artists who frequented Philadelphia's Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped enlisted the help of Michael Coyle, Library Director, who organized a pilot show in the summer of 1975. The show at the Library was a great success, and many works of art were sold. Encouraged by their success, it was decided to build upon the foundation of this show. In 1976, under the leadership of Mrs. Hester Pepper, the founding president, and Michael Coyle, National Exhibits by Blind Artists was incorporated. With the support of the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, the first show was assembled and presented in both the Museum's Nevil Gallery and the Library for the Blind. Nearly sixty thousand people visited this exhibit, created as a Bicentennial Project. The newly established enterprise was provided an office at the University Museum where two subsequent exhibits in 1977 and 1978 were mounted, again rotating the artwork with the Library for the Blind. The exhibits met with enthusiastic public support. Since NEBA's founding, many exhibitions of outstanding works of art have been presented in prominent museums and galleries in the United States and abroad. This pioneer concept art by the blind has produced an enlightened forum for developing projects with similar intent. With its 30-year history of major shows, National Exhibits of Blind Artists has blazed the trail, winning wide recognition in the art world with its promise to continue carrying its message of bright, new prospects for the blind artist. Focus on Art and Vision Art Beyond Sight National Exhibits by Blind Artists presents the 2007-2008 exhibition of work by artists who are legally blind. For thirty three years NEBA has offered the public the opportunity to view not only intriguing works of work, but works of the human spirit as well. Blind artists bring to their work a unique interpretation of the world. Tags: DeafBlind Artist Exhibits Artists |
