In his first public appearance on behalf of ETIRC, which poured more than $100 million into Eclipse, Dutch business magnate Roel Pieper told AVweb in a video interview at EBACE 2008 that a perfect storm of crowded airports in Western Europe and primitive transportation in burgeoning Eastern Europe is creating major opportunities for the charter/air taxi business. Cirrus SR22, the Perspective Avionics Package EBACE 2008 It's more accurate to call the Perspective an options package rather than a new model, since Cirrus will continue to sell the mainstay Avidyne Entegra-equipped SR20s and SR22s. The Perspective is an SR22-only upgrade—at about a $48,000 premium—that has what might best be described as a gen-and-half Garmin G1000. The new EFIS has been, in the words of Alan Klapmeier, "Cirrusized" with 12-inch rather than 10-inch screens and is thus the ideal platform for Garmin's recently announced SVT synthetic vision upgrade, which the perspective has. Terrain depiction is detailed almost down to rubber skids on runways and the new display also has highway-in-the-sky (HITs) boxes and an airdata-driven flight path indicator. To simplify operation of the EFIS, the Perspective has an alphanumeric keyboard which resides on the pedestal between the pilot seats, where a pair of GNS430s are found in an Avidyne-equipped airplane. Besides the keys, some of G1000's knobs and joystick have also been relocated to center section control. Cirrus has also directed Garmin to simplify the GFC700 autopilot control panel and it has one neat new feature: a dedicated blue button labeled LVL. By pushing that, the pilot commands the autopilot to level the wings and nose on the current heading and altitude. Although it's not billed as a recovery-from-unusual attitudes button, our sneak preview of the system at Duluth last week suggests it has that potential. Other Perspective upgrades include a yaw damper, brake temperature systems and spiffy new paint schemes. AVweb Short: EBACE 2008 — Where Everyone Can Fly a 787 One of the most popular booths at EBACE 2008 has nothing directly to do with business aviation, but it's attracting crowds of people. Boeing has put up an elaborate flight simulator with controls approximating a Boeing Business Jet and a wide screen depiction of the ILS to Nice, France. Most people who try it, like this fellow, do a pretty credible job of planting the virtual 787 on the centerline. Tags: EBACE flightsim Boeing aviation airplanes flying |

AVweb Short: EBACE 2008 — Wrap-Up from Geneva The European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE) recorded 21.5 percent more visitors and 35 percent more exhibitors at this year's show in Geneva. Officials say 13,762 people went through the doors of the PalExpo Convention Center at Geneva International Airport. For first-time exhibitors like Cirrus Design it's a permanent mark on the already-busy show calendar. "You just have to be here," said Cirrus spokeswoman Kate Dougherty. Cirrus rented prime exhibit space in prestigious Halle 7, which included booths from virtually all major business jet manufacturers. Many companies significantly upgraded their booths this year as they welcomed some of the richest and most powerful business people, political leaders and royalty from all over the world. Outside, the cheek-by-jowl static display is a harbinger of challenges to come. Tags: EBACE airplanes aviation |

AVweb Short: EBACE 2008 — Hawker Unveils Premier II The next generation of Hawker Beechcraft's composite Premier is faster, goes farther and gets to a new maximum altitude of FL450 faster than its already-revolutionary predecessor and it only costs 10 cents per nautical mile more to operate. The rejuvenated Wichita planemaker unveiled a mockup of the aircraft in a pre-show press conference at EBACE 2008 in Geneva on Monday. The new plane adds winglets, Williams FJ44-3AP turbofans that produce 3,000 lbs. of thrust and goes 1,500 nm on the same size tank of gas, compared to 1,150 nm on he earlier model. "This is truly a revolutionary aircraft," said CEO Jim Schuster, who appeared at the news conference with Gerry Schwartz, chairman of Onex Corp., which took over Hawker Beechcraft more than a year ago. ANN/Aero-TV Special Feature: Cirrus Gets 'Perspective' ... Full Garmin Avionics Suite Now Offered On New SR22-G3s ANN REALTIME SPECIAL REPORT 05.20.08 0500 EDT: We don't mean to overstate the importance of the following news item... but this is a marriage many in the aviation industry have been waiting for. Cirrus Design and Garmin International announced Tuesday at EBACE 2008 that the Duluth, MN planemaker will offer Cirrus Perspective -- an all-glass, fully-integrated flight deck tailored by Garmin specifically for the SR22-G3. "Cirrus and Garmin have worked together since the development of the first SR20 in the late 1990s when the GNS 430 was selected for the SR20's panel, and we are very excited to expand our relationship," said Gary Kelley, Garmin's vice president of marketing. "Both companies are equally committed to bringing customers a safe and quality aircraft, and we are confident Cirrus pilots will enjoy flying with Garmin's industry leading, all-glass integrated flight deck." Check Out Aero-TV's FLIGHT TEST In The Cirrus SR22 G3-GTSX... With Perspective!!! "As a pilot, you sit in a cockpit and experience the world in ways others can only imagine. So naturally, as leaders in technology and innovation, Cirrus and Garmin sat in the cockpit together and worked to truly redesign the pilot-airplane interface" said Cirrus CEO Alan Klapmeier. "Ultimately, with Cirrus Perspective pilots fly smoother, smarter and safer." Cirrus Perspective isn't "just" a G1000 panel fitted to an SR22... but rather a fully integrated, model-specific avionics platform. All information -- from aircraft attitude and air data to engine instrumentation, real-time weather data link, traffic and terrain -- is integrated and digitally depicted on the 12-inch primary flight display (PFD) and multi-function display (MFD). ANN Editor-In-Chief Jim Campbell test flew the fully-equipped airplane recently for ANN and Aero-TV and noted that, "This is the real deal... right here and right now, this has to be the most capable GA piston single in the business. The avionics/airframe integration is exquisitely executed and the airplane truly surpases our great expectations for the 'latest and greatest' of the Cirrus line. I really can't wait to see someone top this... but no matter who does it, the entire industry benefits when companies like Cirrus keep raising the bar. While some may call it a party trick, the addition of the "LVL" capability is going to be (at least) a major convenience and possibly a life-saver. The Dual AHRS, beefed up electrical system, magnificently monstrous displays, and those GREAT new seats make this a really cool way to fly. The airplane just plain defines what is now state of the art for GA." The Perspective is the first single engine piston aircraft with an all-glass Garmin cockpit to utilize dual, solid-state Attitude and Heading Reference Systems (AHRS) that can align while in motion, including in-flight dynamic restarts. This turbine aircraft style architecture provides Cirrus pilots with an extra level of redundancy and safety. Perspective cockpits also include seamless integration of Garmin's GFC 700 automatic flight control system. This standard two-axis autopilot (three-axis autopilot optional) makes it possible for pilots to maintain airspeed references and optimize performance over the entire airspeed envelope. New features of the autopilot system include increased roll and pitch engagement attitudes. Cirrus Perspective will also come standard with Garmin's Synthetic Vision Technology, which presents a 3D depiction of terrain, obstacles and traffic on the PFD. SVT includes helpful features like a flight path marker (displays projected path of the aircraft), Pathways (Garmin's implementation of highway-in-the-sky), and unique runway highlighting and airport signs. With the system already certified by the FAA, Cirrus expects deliveries of SR22-G3 Perspective-equipped aircraft to begin next month.
