Full story: Eight teenagers have been arrested in Lakeland, Fla., on charges that they allegedly beat another teen in an "animalistic attack" so they could make a videotape to post on YouTube. Seven of the teens remained in juvenile detention Tuesday, authorities said. A boy who was charged as an adult has been released on bail. Victoria Lindsay was attacked on March 30 by six teenage girls when she arrived at a friend's home, authorities said. One of the girls struck the 16-year-old victim on the head several times and then slammed her head into a wall, knocking her unconscious, according to an arrest report. Later, according to a clip of the video that was released by the Polk County sheriff's office, the teens can be seen blocking a door and hitting Victoria. "When I saw my daughter in the emergency room, I didn't even recognize my own daughter," her father Patrick Lindsay, said a recent news conference in front of their Florida home. "I just walked in and held her. I didn't want her to see me weep." "I've never seen anybody's face disfigured like that." While the beatings took place more than a week ago, Patrick and Talisa Lindsay said their daughter remains scared for her life. "She is having nightmares over it," said her mother, during a news conference outside their Florida home. "She has multiple bruises from it, from her head all the way down." Her parents blamed the Internet for the incident. "These Web sites are creating a space for criminal activity, beating, fights," Patrick Lindsay said. "MySpace, MTV's 'Jackass,' they are enticing our children and desensitizing out children. Now, if they create the best shock video, they are the heroes. They think it is top dollar." They described their daughter as a popular, honor-roll student and varsity cheerleader, who was "very well liked." "She didn't deserve to be beat down like a dog," her father said. Hurricane Andrew - Southeast Florida - August 24, 1992 This is my Hurricane Andrew chase video. The footage was taken during Andrew's landfall on the Southeast Florida coast, at Coconut Grove, south of Miami. Though Andrew was extremely small, moving very quickly and made landfall about 15 miles to the south, my location was right at the edge of the hurricane's northern eyewall. Unfortunately the entire peak of the storm was at night, however, using a portable spotlight, I was able to capture footage throughout the entire event. Even with the challenging video conditions, Andrew's ferocity is clearly obvious in this footage. The roar of the wind is deafening, punctuated by breaking glass and other debris. Peak winds occur between 13 through 17 minutes into the video, and are sustained near 130mph with gusts to 150mph. The anemometer at the National Hurricane Center (about 2 miles west of my location) failed after recording a gust to 164mph. Based on post-analysis, Andrew is now estimated to have had sustained winds of 165mph with peak gusts near 200-215mph at landfall in South Florida, making it one of only three Category Five hurricanes ever to strike the United States. (Wildlife does bring in money over a longer period of time, as that is why so many come down here. or is it?) Even though their numbers are slightly higher than reported in the 1980's after decades of over hunting there are more killed on the roads than ever before. In 2006, 11 endangered panthers were killed by vehicles. And in 2007, a record 15 were killed. *You will hear me say 14 twice in the video as in the time it took from filming to producing another cat was killed. What will be the future of predators here in America? I often look to other countries and wonder why they can't protect their wildlife, and often forget about the poor job we do at it ourselves.
