He too is desperate; he thinks Laura is dead. Gioconda tries to rekindle the love he once had for her, but it is useless. Offended now, she tells Enzo that she has stolen Laura's corpse. Enzo asks her to explain, but Gioconda is no longer listening to him. All she wants to do now is to die. Enzo is about to attack Gioconda when the effect of the sleeping draught wears off and Laura wakes up and tells Enzo everything that has happened. Enzo throws himself at Gioconda's feet with his beloved Laura, then the two run off. Gioconda is all alone now and is held back from suicide only when she thinks of her mother and the pact she has made with Barnaba. Barnaba arrives bringing the girl's blind mother. Callas - Gioconda 1959 - A te questo rosario I've read quite a bit about the connections between La Gioconda and the life of Callas. It's easy to call someone a bad guy or something something... But there is nothing right or wrong about love... Critics say this and that about Art... And people argue about things... But little's more beautiful than Love, and even fewer is less descripable than Love... Art soudly defends itself... Love remains silent even when an audience rise and some boo, some clap and some sniff and walk away... Another great adaptation from French Romantic dramatist and poet Vistor Hugo, Gioconda is more complicated. For some reason, I favor this story than his "Le roi s'amuse" though they both survive in forms of music and lyric: Also a story about life sacrifice, Gilda sacrfices for love and, as I think, succombs to tyranny, Gioconda, for mercy. Gioconda seems to have more passion in life and more torn apart by opposite ideas--social class and freedom, love and jealousy, tyranny and mercy, forgiving, and filial responsibilities and self-will, etc. I think La Gioconda deserves more attention. That's also one of the reasons I select this presented sequence other than the famous "Suicidio!"
