The King's pathway hike in Spain I think this hike is more dangerous than the Plank Walk trail I did in the Hua shan mountains of China and it makes the Angels Landing hike in Zion look like a cake walk. The construction of this walkway lasted 4 years and was finished in 1905. The walkway has now gone many years without maintenance, and is in a highly deteriorated and dangerous state. After a four people died in 2000 (and several prior) the local government closed the entrances. Adventurous tourists still find their way into the walkway. Hike to Cedar Creek Falls I decided to put this video up I made about two years ago, because my city has only seen 0.04 inches of rain this January(and no predicted rain for the rest of the month). This, the rainiest month of the year, and yet its so dry here -- we really have not had much rain this year. San Diego is a normally sunny, arid place, averaging about 9.9 inches of rain annually. This year(the season so far: measured from July 1, 2006 to today, January 20, 2007) we've only seen 1.71 inches of total precipitation, very, very dry! I made this video in Spring of 2005 near the peak of the third rainiest season in San Diego Californias' history. That year, 22.35 inches of measured rain fell at Lindbergh Field(the main SD airport near downtown) which was the most rain seen here since 1940-1941, when 24.74 inches of rain was measured which is second only to the rain measured during the year, 1883-1884, at 25.97 inches--most rain ever recorded since rain measurements have been kept(1850). The most rainfall in over sixty years -- the most I've ever seen in San Diego, EVER in my life, so what? What happens in a once in a lifetime rainfall? Never seen before HUGE WATERFALLS! Waterfalls that my eyes, or your eyes, may never EVER see happen like this again! Cedar Creek Falls are in a remote part of San Diego County. Incredible natural beauty, but so well hidden, most locals don't even know it exists! About 10 miles from the historical gold rush town of Julian, CA, the falls can be found only after taking a long bumpy country back road where you average about 15 - 20 mph due to the poor quality of paved and unpaved roadway. From the parking lot at the end of the road, you have about an hour moderate to strenuous hike to the Cedar Creek Falls. If you ever decide to hike there it is ADVISED to BRING ENOUGH WATER WITH YOU! I usually bring a gallon just for myself. Call the rangers for the latest updated conditions and heed all warnings they give. I have only been there twice, once on March 20, 2005, and then I returned six weeks later, May 15, 2005. It was a comfortably cool time of the year and I had no problems. During the warm and hot dry time of the year people can get dangerously dehydrated, and conditions can be FATAL in some instances. It's that serious. This canyon is like the "Grand Canyon" of San Diego. It is that big and remote. In 2003, sheriff's helicopter crews rescued 30 people and one dog from the canyon. Beware: Cell phones don't work here because of the topography and remoteness. Cedar Creek Canyon(where the falls are) is the site where the infamous Cedar Creek Fire of 2003 started. The 2003 Cedar Creek Fire, THE LARGEST FIRE TO EVER BURN IN CALIFORNIA, threatened 25 communities in San Diego County and burned nearly 275,000 acres, taking 14 lives and nearly 2,300 residences. To complicate matters more, two additional fires burned 102,000 acres in the county. If you look at my pictures you will see isolated fire charred blackened trees(from the 2003 fire) scattered about the lush greenery. I discoverd the falls by chance. After reading about the falls in a local newspaper, I cut out the article and actually video edited/pasted/faded a color photo of the falls (that I shot) over the black and white photo seen in the newspaper article (as seen around 4 minutes and 30 seconds into this video). The volume of water is the key to the spectacle! I took these photos on March 20, 2005 when the cloudbursts of winter rain had just dumped the most rain on San Diego since 1940-1941! I went back six weeks later on May 15, 2005 and even though there was still many storms since the first visit(3/20/05) the volume was down and the falls had been diminished by a third already!!! The ranger at the parking lot that charged us $5.00 for the day visit said that during the summer and just before the rain season begins the falls are reduced to "just a trickle." The start of the 'road trip' part of the video animation shows the car near the mouth of the San Diego River at the Pacific Ocean. The Cedar Creek Falls flows into the upper San Diego River drainage. Mildred Falls can be seen at the start of the hike, as seen in this video. It was bigger than I'll probably ever see it again(on March 20, 2005) and its the tallest, longest waterfall in San Diego County at about 125-150 feet long, but it's volume is significantly smaller than Cedar Creek Falls. It wasn't much more than a trickle already by May 15, 2005 when I returned. The sounds of water from Mildred falls echoed for miles and miles of the Cedar Creek Falls canyons and trails, very enjoyable. The Cedar Creek Falls are tucked away and when you finally come upon them when they are raging in the full glory of the very peak of a historic rainy season it is TRULY a sight to behold. Hike to Captain Cook's Monument, Big Island, Hawaii Captain Cook Monument Trail Trailhead: 19^ 29.528', 155^ 55.075'; Monument: 19^ 29.941', 155^ 55.976' Hiking: This hike is a fine walk through tall grass, open lava fields and dense, dryland forest, opening onto one of the most pristine ocean beaches in the world. Hiking down to the Captain Cook's Monument from Highway 11 is a great deal of fun—great scenery, wonderful trail that involves complete immersion in Hawai'ian pre- and post-contact history and offers the opportunity for some of the finest snorkeling anywhere on the planet. However, the return hike is hot, thirsty and strenuous; but it is also highly rewarding, granting panoramic views all up and down the Kona Coast. The trail leaves the Napo'opo'o Road just 500 feet below where it drops off Highway 11 near a large avocado tree, right across from a group of three coconut trees, right at telephone pole number 4; parking is tight, but safe. The parking spots and trailhead will show signs of obvious use, usually in the form of recently deposited horse apples from the many trail riders frequenting the area. The first avocado tree is the harbinger of wonderful things to come, as the trail passes through an area rich in guava, mango, papaya and avocado that are free for the gathering. The 2.5-mile hike takes about 1-1 1/2 hours to descend, somewhat more time to come back up. After following a jeep road for about 50 feet, the trail turns left when the jeep road turns right onto private property. Although overgrown by tall grass for the next half mile, the trail runs more or less straight down the left side of a rock wall to the sea. As the pitch straightens out, keep to the left when the trail first forks and proceed to the beach. You will strike shore several hundred feet northwest of the monument—stroll through the remains of Ka'awaloa Village along the beach on your way to pay homage to Europe's most prolific explorer, James Cook. Remember to bear right at the trail junction when returning uphill, or you will face a long, hot and unpleasant time wandering the a'a fields of Napo'opo'o. It is also possible, but much less pleasant, to hike most of the way to the monument along the shoreline from Napo'opo'o. This hike is an uninteresting exercise in scrambling over boulders along the beach and contains at least two places that have to be swum in rough water; as such, the safety of this trek is totally at the whim of ocean tides and swells. Highly not recommended. Signs of Porcupines ~a hike I take a hike in my woods... show the climb and find signs of recent porcupine action. While I wasn't specific, please realize that I can tell that it is residue from fresh feeding as it was loose matter and it had recently rained. Discoloration from sun and elements become apparent after awhile. The den I had identified earlier upon return from a previous hike and much research. The only thing that I couldn't find was why I think that raw porcupine meat keeps well - the rest was correct. In several states they are still protected for those who become lost or stranded as an easy kill with a blunt blow to the nose. Fuel and Electricity Price Hike Demo - 29 May 2006 - Video 1 It was supposed to be the climax of a series of anti-fuel hike demonstrations, yet it ended on a tragic note when police today forcefully broke up the protest with at least two seriously injured. At 10.30am, the 500-strong crowd gathered near the Jalan Ampang entrance of the iconic Kuala Lumpur City Centre and began their peaceful protest with noisy chants and fiery speeches. One of the protest banners said: "Cronies get rich while workers are oppressed". The protestors also slammed a government's decision last week to raise electricity tariffs by 12 percent - the first hike in nearly a decade. Some 100 riot police wielding batons and rifles stood guard in front of KLCC Twin Towers, alongside several water cannon trucks, as helicopters flew overhead. "Everybody is suffering from the fuel hike. Now electricity prices are also up. These two hikes will hit us hard, whether our pay is large or small," chief protest organiser Dr Hatta Ramli told the crowd. Things took a turn for the worse when the third speaker at the demonstration, DAP representative Ronnie Liu, expressed his gratitude for the support given by voters to the opposition at the recent Sarawak state elections. Immediately, the police through loudhailers issued an order for the crowd to disperse. The crowd ignored the warning, and five minutes later, water cannons were fired. Despite being drenched profusely, most of the crowd defiantly held their ground, prompting plainclothes police officers to move in and make random arrests. Those arrested include Liu, PAS Kubang Kerian member of parliament Salahuddin Ayub and Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy information chief Badrul Hisham. As the crowd moved out of the water cannons' range, the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) charged at them sending many protestors, including women and children, running for cover as shocked Sunday shoppers looked on. Excessive violence Eyewitness reports tell of excessive violence being used by the FRU on several protestors, including PKR deputy secretary-general Zahir Hassan (left and below), who was kicked a number of times while sprawled on the road. Zahir was walking away from the protest venue with his two daughters when he was repeatedly shoved from behind by a FRU officer using his shield. The FRU officer then turned to Zahir's two daughters, both in their 20s, pushing one of them. Enraged, Zahir attempted to protect his daughters from the police officer. Instead, Zahir was assaulted by several FRU personnel. He was thrown to the floor, endured several blows of police baton and at least three kicks - two on the back and one on the abdomen - prompting his daughters to scream hysterically. All this while, Zahir was clutching onto the anti-fuel hike booklet that was distributed at the protest. According to PKR information chief Tian Chua, Zahir - who was arrested by the police - had been sent to the hospital for medical attention. An X-ray was taken before Zahir was sent to the Pudu police station where other detainees were held. http://www.djnovin.com/column/minyak/2006/05/protes-harga-minyak-fru-polis-belasah.html http://www.jeffooi.com/2006/05/ngos_this_is_why_we_need_ipcmc.php Tags: malaysia kuala lumpur petronas ipcmc ganas demo minyak dap pas bn barisan tenaga nasional badawi |
