iMovie '08 Rant Apple's new iLife '08 has some great features. Unfortunately though, the new iMovie took a complete step backward. iMovie '08 sucks. I cut together this movie using the new iMovie. It was difficult. Somehow, I survived. Download link for iMovie HD: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html Tags: apple imovie ilife ricky mondello exposay movie |

iMovie '08 update This week's Macworld Video addresses the new features in Apple's recent iMovie '08 7.1 update. Unlike most iLife updates, which are all about bug fixes, this update adds some nice new functionality to iMovie '08. It's a controversial product, this iMovie '08, largely because it's a brand-new product that is lacking many of the features of its predecessor, iMovie HD. However, leaving aside the controversy over Apple's decision to kill iMovie HD, iMovie '08 is very good at what it was designed to do: let users cut down their videos quickly and then share them with their friends and family. If you're someone with a giant pile of home videos just sitting around unedited, iMovie '08 is meant for you. Tags: mac macworld iMovie video |

iMovie Effects Tutorial Recently You Tuber, hazzer123daniels123 asked me about effects in iMovie. I do my level best here to explain them. Hopefully I'll get more articulate as I do more of these tutorial type videos. Edit: Please not this is iMovie 06 which I got with the iLife package. In later versions of iMovie Apple removed most of the effects present in the older versions.. They did this because they are idiots. :) Tags: imovie effects tutorial hazzer123daniels123 |

Gerard Butler fan video "Attila" (made in iMovie '08) A fan video for actor Gerard Butler, using clips from the USA channel miniseries "Attila." (Also stars Powers Boothe.) This isn't that super great of a video—just a bunch of clips strung together—but I was just having fun playing around with iMovie '08. A lot of Mac fans are upset with Apple's new "upgrade" to iMovie '08, and I am no exception—iMovie 6 had some many more features and control over editing. But, iMovie '08 is pretty darn fun to use! I'm just glad that Apple is still making iMovie 6 available for iMovie '08 customers. If you're new to Macs, don't think that iMovie '08 is all there is to it—iMovie 6 has a LOT too offer and you might want to "graduate" to it eventually. Music composed with Garageband's "Magic Garageband" feature. I didn't really "compose" this music myself, but more like choose a few customized settings, added some tracks, used some loops, and this is the end result. I absolutely love Garageband and this new upgrade is several different kinds of awesome! For making quickie videos and something simple, iMovie 08 is rather fun. It's definitely a unique approach to video editing! Tags: imovie 08 '08 apple mac gerard butler garageband magic movie attila atilla atila attilla |

Steve Jobs introduces iMovie '08 http://www.uberpulse.com/us/2007/08/apple_redesigns_imovie_much_simpler_video.php Apple did create a new logo for it to show that it is a completely different version. Just like that engineer, I found the old iMovie too hard to use. And I can't wait to get my hands on it. Two other features I like: being able to add a subtitle (perhaps a logo?) on the whole length of the movie, which you could not do before, at least not easily, and the YouTube upload feature as I upload most of the videos on Google's video site anyway. iMovie vs. Windows Movie Maker: WMM is horrible This video has two parts: The first showcases some more of iMovie's many features, including templates, sound effects, sophisticated adjustment of filters, and very advanced export options, as well as custom frame sizes (so your video will never have that "squished" or "squashed" look often seen on YouTube). The second part of the video shows how Windows Movie Maker is a wretched excuse for a video editor, and how limited its features are. But also, it distorts the aspect ratio in some videos, and makes it IMPOSSIBLE to fix or adjust. For this reason, if for no other, Windows Movie Maker is a terrible program. iMovie 6 and Windows Movie Maker 2 were used in this video. No add-ons or plug-ins were used. Windows Movie Maker vs. iMovie - showdown! There's a myth out there that Windows Movie Maker is the "same" is iMovie. It's often brought up when Mac users praise the iLife suite (which comes free with every Mac), in particular iMovie. Some Windows users will say, "But we've got Windows Movie Maker. That's just the same, right?" NO. It is not. Not even remotely. Windows Movie Maker is very limited compared to iMovie, in the way that it edits and exports video. It can export as WMV (different sizes) and one flavor of AVI. iMovie can export as AVI (XviD and several other codecs), MOV (many codecs—DV, H.264, Sorenson, etc), MP4 (MPEG-4, H.264, etc) and more. iMovie's editing tools are far more sophisticated as well, as I hope this video will further demonstrate. Please note: I am not an expert on iMovie or WMM, just an average consumer. I'm not trying to cover every nuance here—just a few things that are important to me. I welcome rebuttals of this video, but if you're going to do it, please provide specific information and details on where I am wrong. I am here to learn, and if I have been mistaken in some of the information I present here, I would like to know. The site I link to at the end of the video is http://www.animemusicvideos.org They have free software, many tutorials and other information about anything video-related. Their tutorials are not only good for anime—anyone who wants to make the best quality video should read what they have to say! For a more in-depth review of iMovie vs. Movie Maker, read this: http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=408493 Windows Movie Maker 2 and iMovie 6 were the versions used in this video. Edited with Final Cut Pro. Music from the film "Extreme Prejudice," composed by Jerry Goldsmith. *** Yeah, I know this video is a little rough around the edges—that's what you get when you crank out something in the middle of the night! ;-) *** Tags: windows movie maker imovie mac pc os microsoft apple video editing |

Macross Plus AMV, iMovie HD 6 this video features the latest rough cut of my Macross Plus AMV through the eyes of iMovie HD 6 (iLife 07). i want to show off how iMovie processes the videos with the various effects such as cross-dissolves, fade in, fade out, and titling. if more people see how videos and effects are arranged in iMovie, perhaps more will join in on the fun of editing videos especially if making AMVs. along with iMovie, there are a handful of other apps used to make this AMV possible: with Handbrake 0.9.1, i am able to rip a high quality MPEG4 off the DVDs using the "Quicktime" preset . **caveat** the "Quicktime" preset could take up to a whole day to rip one hour of DVD video, but its so worth it when you see how good the MPEG4 video looks. it also has a useful feature of resizing the out-sourced video to meet the required resolution for your project. with Streamclip 1.9, i am able to transcode MPEG4 to DV format. this is important because iMovie edits DV natively. if you simply import MPEG4 into iMovie HD, iMovie will just transcode it to Apple's Intermediate Codec (AIC), which could take a long while. and its not even worth it, because scrubbing through the video to capture the clips you want with AIC is slow and choppy. especially if you are working on a Mac Mini. Quicktime Pro can transcode MPEG4 to DV format too, but StreamClip seems to do a faster job, and has the useful ability to crop the video to get rid of any dark edges. with Quicktime Pro 7, i am able to easily adjust brightness, contras, and color saturation. this is mostly for post production after i have completed my final cut. because i have moved over to Final Cut Express 4 (FCE4) to finish my M.P. AMV, i figured i'd share what my video looks like in iMovie HD 6. both the latest rough cut and final are similar in the editing. but thanks to the advance features in FCE4, the final cut has a much better (higher) video quality, some simple, yet neat, visual effects through video layering. also it has a greater ability to fine tune the fade in's and out's along with the transitions. about the AMV itself: 1. you may notice some new scenes i have added to emphasize the romantic element of the love triangle between the three main characters. 2. if you pay attention you'll notice several large chunks of video sequences that fit into the verses of the song perfectly with no editing. 3. a true 640x480 (edge to edge) video resolution thanks to Handbrake with a little fine tuning from Streamclip. the AMV featured here was edited (from scratch) using the following: Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2Ghz, 2GB MEM, 120GB HDD http://www.123macmini.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-1214 iMovie HD 6 http://www.apple.com/ Quicktime Pro 7 http://www.apple.com/ Handbrake 0.9.1 http://handbrake.m0k.org/ Streamclip 1.9 http://www.squared5.com/ Macross Plus Volume 1, Parts 1 & 2 DVD Macross Plus Volume 2, Parts 3 & 4 DVD and even more time. this video was shot using a Sony Cybershot DCS-H9 w/ 4GB Sandisk Pro Duo enjoy, @riel http://arielistix.blogspot.com/ Tags: Macross Plus AMV iMovie HD Final Cut Express FCE4 Quicktime Pro Mac Mini Core Duo Handbrake MPEG StreamClip |
