Irene Cara - Flashdance... What a Feeling Flashdance is a musical and romance film released in April 1983, and was one of the most successful films of the early 1980s. The film was the first collaboration of producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer and its presentation of some sequences in the style of music videos was an influence on other 1980s films including Top Gun, Simpson and Bruckheimer's most famous production. Flashdance opened to poor reviews by professional critics but was a box office success, becoming the 3rd highest grossing film of 1983 in the USA.[1][2] Its soundtrack spawned several hit songs, among them Maniac performed by Michael Sembello and the Academy Award-winning "Flashdance... What a Feeling" performed by Irene Cara which was written specifically for the film. _______________________________________ From the time she recorded her first solo album at the tender age of eight, it was obvious to all of those who surrounded and supported Irene Cara that she was bound for a fate well beyond that of most young singers. Taking the stages of Broadway by storm two short years later, Cara cemented her status of child prodigy by boldly performing with such musical legends as Stevie Wonder, Sammy Davis Jr., and Roberta Flack -- and by confidently holding her own alongside the seasoned showbiz veterans. Irene Cara was born to a Cuban mother and Puerto Rican father in New York City in 1964. The rising starlet undoubtedly showcased her wild ambitions when, after recording two albums (one in English and the other in Spanish) and making an unforgettable Broadway debut, she turned her attentions to acting with the 1975 interracial relationship drama Aaron Loves Angela. Though she had previously appeared in such television series as Love of Life and The Electric Company, Aaron Loves Angela provided the notable springboard toward more dramatic roles for Cara. The following year's rags-to-riches musical drama Sparkle utilized both Cara's skills as an actress and a dramatist, though it wasn't until after supporting roles in Roots: The Next Generations and Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones that Cara would truly realize her potential. Cast in the lead of Alan Parker's breakthrough 1980 musical Fame, the film became nothing less than a cultural phenomenon and launched Cara to national stardom. A Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress accompanied her singing of two hit singles on the multi-platinum soundtrack to the film, and both songs -- "Fame" and "Out There on My Own" -- were later nominated for Best Song at the 1981 Academy Awards (with "Fame" ultimately taking home the Oscar). Subsequently Grammy nominated as both Best New Female Artist and Best New Pop Artist and named Top New Single Artist by Billboard Magazine, it seemed that there was little stopping Cara from achieving all of her wildest childhood dreams. Cara's work on Flashdance just three years later netted the stratospheric starlet two Grammies, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe, marking the apex of a remarkable career. At around the 3 minute mark, her song is interrupted, and she has a nasty breakup scene with the man she loves. She then finishes the song in tears. "Antigone" (1961 Film) With Irene Papas: sealed in a Cave from the play by Sophocles Irene Papas ... Antigone Manos Katrakis ... Creon Director: Yorgos Javellas (George Tzavellas) in Greek with English subtitles Much of Antigone's humanity comes thru in this scene, though more by Papas' acting than the words. Antigone clearly does want to live, and laments her impending death. Missing from this filmed except are the famous (or infamous, around line 1000) comments where she provides rather unconvincing reasons for her actions, and furthur confesses that she would not do all this over the body of a husband or son--repudiating her earlier stance. Some scholars have argued that this passage isn't authentic, but their reasons are rather subjective, and no less an authority than Aristotle quoted them and gave no hint that they may be spurious. In any case, her actions and words are those of a young woman, filled the certainty and righteousness of youth (Oscar Wilde "I am not young enough to know everything") who, moreover, has not experienced a husband or a child. Antigone is closer to her dead family than anyone living anyway. She is in a rather disraught state now, but like any fine Greek, has to find reasons. But her "reasons" were always more emotional, or to be more exact, pre-rational, anyway. In her cross-examination by Creon (lines 550-570 or so), he zeros in quite effectively on her "reasonings" and she has to retreat into dogma. Remember that at no time does Tiresias say her stance is correct, and the proper burial of her brother would have taken place without her intervention.
