Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and ASEAN. The struggle for democracy and human rights in Burma is a struggle for life and dignity. It is a struggle that encompasses our political, social and economic aspirations. The people of my country want the two freedoms that spell security: freedom from want and freedom from fear. AUNG SAN SUU KYI - Only Nobel Peace Prize Winner Imprisoned U.S. Campaign http://www.uscampaignforburma.org/ UK Campaign http://www.burmacampaign.org.uk/aungsansuukyi.php Burma Campaign http://www.burmacampaign.org.uk/mtvaction.html National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi I am very humbly requesting any fellow youtubers out there if they will take it upon themselves to make their own video to continue to increase awareness, to share it with everyone, because I truly believe there is strength in numbers. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. It can be short and simple. Knowing she's been imprisoned for years, and for no reason It's cruel and pitiful that she stay confined when she knew her husband was very ill. She was not able to be by his side when he died of cancer, but I know in my heart they were both in each other's thoughts and souls during Michael's last days of life. I'm sure they both were in one another's minds and hearts every single day. Write a school paper on her if you are allowed to pick the person. To any teachers out there -- Please have one day of awareness, teaching your students about what democracy is, how precious freedoms are. Introduce your students to Aung San Suu Kyi. Have the students write letters for her. She represents freedom, democracy, elegance and grace. Fight the good fight, and this is one of those good "fights". Aung San Suu Kyi is about 62 years old now. She's done absolutely nothing wrong. She is a graceful, humble, decent caring human There are no regular visiting hours for her. Than Shwe is Burma's leader of one of the world's most BRUTAL regimes. Than Shwe should not be in power. He lost the election. Perhaps the person that replaces him will show the world what a great leader is by freeing Suu Kyi, and all of the political prisoners. This will be a man history will look back on with fondness, a leader the people of Myanmar (and the world) will respect. Last month she celebrated her birthday, isolated. I can't help but think about her sons, how they worry about her and hurt for her. This is their mother, and she's been unjustly imprisoned, for years. I think about if that were my mother or my father, wrongfully imprisoned. Tags: aung san suu kyi nobel peace prize Chomskyno1 burma myanmar jesus savior humanitarian democracy |

Free Burma, Free Aung San Suu Kyi, part 1 of 2 Free Burma. Aung San Suu Kyi, born 19 June 1945 in Yangon (Rangoon), is a pro-democracy activist and leader of the National League for Democracy in Myanmar (Burma), and a noted prisoner of conscience and advocate of nonviolent resistance. Aung San Suu Kyi was the third child in her family. Her name "Aung San" derives from her father, "Kyi" from her mother and "Suu" from her grandmother.[6] A Buddhist, Suu Kyi won the Rafto Prize and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. In 1992 she was awarded the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru peace prize by the Government of India for her peaceful and non-violent struggle under a military dictatorship. She is currently under detention, with the Myanmar government repeatedly extending her detention. According to the results of the 1990 general election, Suu Kyi earned the right to be Prime Minister, as leader of the winning National League for Democracy party, but her detention by the military junta prevented her from assuming that role. She is frequently called Daw Aung San Suu Kyi; Daw is not part of her name, but an honorific similar to madam for older, revered women, literally meaning "aunt". Strictly speaking, she has only the one name, though it is acceptable to refer to her as "Ms. Suu Kyi" or Dr. Suu Kyi, since those syllables serve to distinguish her from her father, General Aung San. You can either follow the guidelines at your university or participate in our campaigns unofficially. A very cool link with cool people: http://freesuukyi.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma have many joining the cause every single day. It's a worthy cause and one that millions of people in Burma (Myanmar) are begging other people to help them with. Don't think that her 'house' arrest is a pleasant experience. She's isolated, no communication, rarely a visit, and the place is barricaded way behind a wall, fence, barbed wire and guards. Even letting it known you wish to visit her can cause a serious problem, especially if it is a citizen of Burma. My intention is simply to bring awareness. It's very touching, humbling, and heartbreaking when another, of grace, integrity and moral character, requests in a sincere and gentle plea, begging other people to "Please, use your liberty to promote ours". Free Burma and Free Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Coldplay, U2, Bono, Avril Levine, Eric Clapton, Pearl Jam, Damien Rice, and many other people, every day, are becoming aware and joining the cause. Join us, become a peaceful freedom fighter. Make history, make a difference. ************************************ Fact Sheet Bureau of Public Affairs Washington, DC September 19, 2006 Narcotics Trafficking The United States determined this year that the Burmese regime has again "failed demonstrably" to meet international counter narcotics obligations. Burma remains a source of deep concern because it is the second largest producer of illicit opium, and it produces and trafficks Amphetamine Type Substances (ATS). A 2005 U.S. Government survey found 40,000 hectares producing 380 metric tons of potential heroin. Within the Burmese regime and military, there are serious problems of official corruption, complicity, and lack of control over high-level drug traffickers, and amphetamine production and consumption. U.S. counter narcotics assistance was suspended in 1988, when the military regime began suppressing the pro-democracy movement. Trafficking in Persons The United States has designated Burma a Tier 3 country under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act because the regime does not fully comply with the minimum standards to eliminate trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so. Burma trafficks women, children, and men for forced labor and sexual exploitation, both internally and to several Asian countries. The regime's economic mismanagement, human rights abuses, and forced labor policy contribute to Burma's large human trafficking problem. After the regime began arresting opponents of forced labor, the International Labor Organization (ILO) stopped accepting new cases documenting these abuses in Burma. In 2005, the regime imposed new restrictions on all NGOs and international organizations, undermining their ability to care for trafficking victims. The Burmese government uses internal forced labor, with reports of the Burmese Army forcibly enlisting thousands of children. Free Aung San Suu Kyi The speech was remarkable. That day changed me. Let this speech rise. Let Aung San Suu Kyi inspire you... About Daw Aung San Suu Kyi: ( From http://www.USCampaignForBurma.org ) Daw Aung San Suu Kyi (pronounced Daw Aung Sawn Sue Chee) is one of the world's most renown freedom fighters and advocates of nonviolence, having served as the figurehead for Burma's struggle for democracy since 1988. Born on June 19th, 1945 to Burma's independence hero, Aung San, Aung San Suu Kyi was educated in Burma, India, and the United Kingdom. Her father was assassinated when she was only two years old. In 1988, while living in London, she returned to Burma to nurse her dying mother, and was plunged into the country's nationwide uprising that had just begun. Joining the newly-forming National League for Democracy political party, Aung San Suu Kyi gave numerous speeches calling for freedom and democracy. The military regime responded to the uprising with brute force, shooting and otherwise killing up to 10,000 demonstrators â€" student, women, children, and others â€" in a mater of months. Unable to maintain its grip on power, the regime was forced to call for a general election in 1990. As Aung San Suu Kyi began to campaign for the NLD, she and many others were detained by the regime. Despite being held under house arrest, the NLD went on to win a staggering 82% of the seats in parliament. The regime never recognized the results. Aung San Suu Kyi has been in and out of arrest ever since. She was held from 1989-1995, and again from 2000-2002. She was again arrested and placed behind bars in May 2003 after the Depayin massacre, during which up to 100 of her supporters were beaten to death by the regime's cronies. She has moved from prison back into house arrest in late 2003 and has been held there ever since. She has won numerous international awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize, Sakharov Prize from the European Parliament, United States Presidential Medal of Freedom, and Jawaharlal Nehru Award from India. She has called on people around the world to join the struggle for freedom in Burma, saying "Please use your liberty to promote ours."
