Made in Germany | Slovenia - booming economy, low wages On January 1st, 2008 Slovenia will be the first new Eastern European member state to step into the rotating EU presidency TOf the 10 nations that joined the European Union in May 2004, Slovenia's economic policies made it a a model "new member candidate": reform-opriented and with a strong political will. But things have changed; a divisive internal dispute has paralysed reform and hurt the economy. Growth is still 6%, but the future looks bleak: inflation has risen dramatically and foreign investment has stagnated. Banking and insurance sector reforms are moving forward - but slowly. Karl Harenbrock travelled across the country to find out what ails Slovenia. He met with captains of industry and union leaders in the capitol city Ljubljana, sensed dissatisfaction on the streets of Maribor and saw what's working in Koper - the city with the fastest growing harbor on the Adriatic coast. Eurobasket 07 - France vs Slovenia 05/09 05 September 2007 Slovenia Top Group D A defiant Slovenia side edged France 67-66 to clinch top spot of Group D. With Slovenia leading 67-65 with 0.1 seconds left to play, France had a chance to take the game to overtime but Tony Parker only made one of two attempts from the charity stripe to give their opponents their third straight win. With Jaka Lakovic heavily marked by Les Bleus, Slovenian guard Domen Lorbek came up strong for his team on the night. Lorbek sank the crucial free-throws to give his team the lead for good with 12 second left on the clock. The 22-year-old finished with 15 points and was a pefect five for five from the field and four of five from the charity stripe. "We were lucky in the end and we won the game," said Lorbek. Slovenia felt unjustly punished when the official threw out captain Rasho Nesterovic of the game after a foul on Parker three minutes into the third quarter but it by no means hindered his team. "I am very proud of my team-mates for what they did tonight," said Nesterovic. "They showed a lot of character and unity to come from 15 points down and win the game." The center's disqualification saw France go up 48-33 but a never-say-die Slovenia hit back with a 16-3 run to take a 52-51 lead with two minutes left to play in the quarter. "Nesterovic's departure changed the game completely," said France coach Claude Bergeaud. "We played slow on offense and defense and in the last minutes of the game we had little energy and we lost our concentration." Bergeaud had requested his team to have a balanced scoring and a better sharing of the ball after Parker's heroics led to a win over Italy. FIBA Europe / Castoria / Giulio Ciamillo Turiaf's 15 points weren't enough as France lost their way His wishes were immediately answered with France having four different players scoring his team's first points - Parker did finish with a game-high 25 points while Ronny Turiaf added 15. Following a level first quarter, Les Bleus stepped up their defense and limited Slovenia to one point over the next three minutes as they went on a 7-1 run to take command. France suffered a setback with, Turiaf - their leading top scorer (10 points) at that point in the game - left the court after sustaining a right shoulder injury following a foul from Nesterovic. Parker hit his team's first three-pointer with less than two minutes to go in the first half. It sparked his team on a 7-0 run, with the NBA superstar scoring five points in that surge to help France take a 39-31 half-time lead. Bergeaud's men committed just two turnovers in the first half while their opponents turned the ball over nine times. France led 56-52 going into the final period but their hopes of pulling away were quashed as Slovenia kept hitting back. With 54 seconds remaining and France leading 65-64, Parker missed a three-point attempt and his team-mate Tariq Kirksay fouled Lorbek, sending him to the line. Lorbek made one of two to tie the contest at 65 a piece with 36 seconds on the clock. Kirksay then missed a jumpshot and Lorbek again was sent to the foul line with 11 seconds left after being foul by Florent Pietrus. He made the pair to see Slovenia remain undefeated (3-0) in the group. Slovenia were 18 for 24 (75%) from the free-throw line while France were 21 for 30(70%). Slovenia out-rebounded France 32 to 27. Eurobasket 07 - Greece vs Slovenia 14/09 14 September 2007 Theo Papaloukas's driving lay-up with 6.7 seconds remaining completed a furious 14-1 flurry to the finish as Greece overcame a 12-point deficit in the final 2:30 to knock off Slovenia 63-62 and live on for another chance to defend their EuroBasket title. Papaloukas added yet another chapter to his superstar and legendary status with 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, setting up another showdown with world champions and hosts Spain in Saturday's semi-finals. Matjaz Smodis (Slovenia) Matjaz Smodis and Slovenia had a big lead late but could not hold on. "Slovenia played more intelligent than we did and better than us for 39 minutes. But we played better in the last minute. We had no chioce," said Papaloukas, who had two points and zero assists at half-time. "We pressed, made lay-ups and we got the job done. We showed character to come back. We've been in these situations before." "I'll never forget this game, this moment. This team is unbelievable. It's not the first time it's happened to us. But it shows that we never stop believing," said Nikolaos Zisis, who hit two foul shots and a three-pointer in the thrilling 14-1 spurt. Lazaros Papadopoulos added 10 points for the reigning champs, who forced Slovenia into four turnovers and two missed three-pointers in the final 2:30. Jaka Lakovic had 14 points, five rebounds and three assists but his potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer fell well short of its target. "It's heart-breaking. We played a great game until the final 2:30 and Greece are simply more experienced than we are," said Slovenia big man Erazem Lorbek. Radoslav Nesterovic collected 16 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots, and Matjaz Smodis added 10 points but it was not enough for the Slovenians, who lost their second straight game and face Germany in the 5th-8th place classificiation on Saturday. Both teams came out ready to play and gave the fans a real back-and-forth battle with four lead changes and six ties. A late Lakovic three-pointer gave Slovenia a 17-12 advantage, which Greece trimmed to 17-14 to end the first period. The see-saw affair continued in the second half and Greece went ahead 28-25 on Vasileios Spanoulis's jumper with three minutes left. But Ales Pipan's men responded with a 9-0 run, featuring a three-pointer by Erazem Lorbek and a driving lay-up at the buzzer by Goran Dragic to send the teams into the locker-room with Slovenia ahead 34-28 - after 12 lead changes and eight ties. Slovenia came out working hard on defense and held Greece without a basket for the first 3:34 in building a 41-28 lead. A three-pointer by Dimitrios Diamantidis trimmed the margin to 49-40, but the Slovenians were ahead 51-40 going into the fourth. Uros Slokar's inside basket increased the Slovenia lead to 16 points - 58-42 - with less than eight minutes to play. And Lakovic's three-pointer made it 61-49 with 2:41 left. But Greece finally woke up. Zisis and Panagiotis Vasilopoulos both made two foul shots followed by one free throw by Lakovic for a 62-53 scoreline with 1:37 to go. After a Slovenia turnover, Papaloukas scored a driving lay-up but failed to convert the three-point play. Another Slovenia turnover ended in Papaloukas draining a three-pointer. And after yet another turnover, Zisis buried his only three-point attempt of the game to trim the deficit to 62-61. Domen Lorbek stepped up for his team but missed a three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining to give Greece a final chance to finish the run and Papaloukas proved once again why he's widely considered the best player in Europe, cutting into the heart of the Slovenian defense for the winner. Eurobasket 07 - Germany vs Slovenia 15/09 15 September 2007 Germany Find A Way Less than 24 hours after their inexplicable loss to Greece last night, Slovenia had a sense of deja-vu. Facing Germany in the 5-8 classification games Slovenia lost 69-65 after a big comeback by their opponent in the last minutes. It wasn't as bad as last night, but once again Slovenia managed to lose a big lead in the Demond Greene (Germany) Demond Greene had 16 points in the win for Germany. last minutes. Oddly the fourth quarter score from last night, 23-11 against Slovenia, was the exact score of today's last quarter. "We were really disappointed after not playing so great in the last couple of days," said Germany's Demond Greene who had 16 points. "We didn't reach our main goal here which was a medal, but at least we got the ticket to the pre-Olympic tournament." Slovenia played the last game last night and was six seconds short of a historical performance in the semi-finals over favourites Greece, but seemed to have recovered just fine, until the last minutes. Germany on the other hand had one more day to rest and lost by a big margin to Spain in the quarters, so their mental readiness seemed better, and they stepped up in the last minutes. Germany deleted a 60-51 Slovenian lead in the last 5:16 behind an 18-5 run led by Dirk Nowitzki who made 10 of his team's last 12 points and finished the game with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Nowitzki scored seven early points in the first five minutes of the game, as Germany held a 12-6 lead. Slovenia hit a couple of shots from long range, to tie the score and finish the first quarter down 18-16. Germany maintained the lead early in the second quarter, until Slovenia once again found their hot hand in three pointers by Goran Jagodnik and Erazem Lorbek, who gave Slovenia their first lead in the game, 25-23. Nowitzki was there to give Germany the lead back, and turned in 13 first half points, before missing a buzzer beater tip in, but Germany still held a 32-31 lead after twenty minutes. The lead changed hands seven times in the first seven baskets of the third quarter. Steffen Hamann's lay-up made it 39-38 with 5:52 but that was the last German lead for a long time. Jaka Lakovic and Matjaz Smodis led a Slovenian 9-0 run which led to the first double-digit lead of the game. Slovenia missed open shots early in the fourth, and waited more than three and a half minutes before scoring their first fourth quarter points. Despite a big block by Erazem Lorbek on Nowitzki, during that period, Germany came back to minus three, but Smodis and Raso Nesterovic quickly made it a nine point game again, 60-51. Germany once again stepped up their defense and with three hits from long range by Demond Greene, Ademole Okulaja and Nowitzki tied the game at 62-62 with 1:56 on the clock. Lakovic connected on only one of two from the line and then made a turnover, and that's where the deja-vu started. Hamann found an open path to the basket and gave Germany their first lead since his last basket in the 24th minute, and after Okulaja stole a bad pass by Jagodnik, Nowitzki scored a fade-away from the top of the key to make it 66-63 and march for the win. Germany will play Croatia for the fifth spot while France and Slovenia will fight for the seventh place and the last ticket to the pre-Olympic tournament. Tags: Eurobasket 07 Germany Slovenia |

Eurobasket 07 - Italy vs Slovenia 03/09 03 September 2007 Slovenia Win At Buzzer Jaka Lakovic buried a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Slovenia a 69-68 triumph over Italy in the team's Group D opener in Alicante. The Italians thought they had won the game when Matteo Soragna's three-ball gave his team a 68-66 lead with five seconds remaining. Matteo Soragna (Italy) Matteo Soragna led Italy with 16 points in the loss. But the Slovenian guard had the last say. "I had no time to think and that's why I made the shot," said a delighted Lakovic. Slovenia almost shot themselves on the foot, having led 60-47 with five minutes left to play, they allowed Italy to take a 64-63 lead with one minute left on the clock. "At that point I thought that we didn't have the character to win big games or to kill games off," said Matjaz Smodis, who led Slovenia in scoring with 19 points. "In the end, we showed that we do have that character and that today's victory was merit of what we had done in the previous three quarters." Smodis scored nine points to help Slovenia establish a 21-14 lead by the end of the opening quarter. Slovenia then stepped up their defense and limited Italy to just two points over the next four minutes to extend their advantage to 28-16. Lakovic's three-ball gave Slovenia their biggest lead at 38-23. Matteo Soragna's layup allowed the Azzurri to go into the break trailing 38-25. Italy made just one of 10 from outside the arc in the first half. The Azzurri emerged from the changing room a different team with an 11-0 run at the start of the third quarter cutting the Slovenia lead to 38-36. Angelo Gigli scored seven points in that surge. But their opponents hit right back with a 16-4 run of their own as Smodis continued to provide many of the points. Slovenia went into the last quarter leading 56-45. Ales Pipan's side limited Italy to just two points over the next five minutes to take a 60-47 lead. Massimo Bulleri ended Italy's drought by scoring the next three points. Bulleri remained heavily involved and his three-point play cut the deficit to 62-61 with less than two minutes remaining. "Perhaps not all of us are on the same boat," said Bulleri, who had a game-high 20 points, 11 of which came in the last quarter. "But the will is there." "We must show more focus in offense and defense tomorrow." Slovenia were superior shooting the ball from three-point range, they were five of 17 (29%) while Italy were four of 22 (19%). Eurobasket 07 - Turkey vs Slovenia 08/09 08 September 2007 Slovenia Slays Turks A balanced attack led Slovenia to a 66-51 victory over Turkey in Group F of the 2007 EuroBasket and helped the Slovenians remain undefeated at 3-0 in Spain. Uros Slokar provided a huge spark off the bench with 12 points in 19 minutes as Slovenia went on a 21-1 surge spanning the third and fourth quarters for a comfortable victory. Radoslav Nesterovic led Slovenia with 13 points while Goran Dragic added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists and Jaka Lakovic chipped in five points, seven rebounds and three assists. "In the first half, both teams made a lot of mistakes. In the second half we stepped on it and started to play better defense. Congratulations to my players. The next games are Germany and Lithuania and we can play with less pressure," said Slovenia coach Ales Pipan. "I guess we've given something to the people back home in Slovenia to party about tonight." "It's not really about my three-point shots. I think without the defense on their main guys we wouldn't have done that. I was just lucky that I was there at the right time and I made them and it helped my team," said the game-winner Slokar. "I just stepped up and hit the three-pointers, but most importantly, that allowed us to get back into some rhythm. And it all started working again." Mehmet Okur (Turkey) Okur had a night to forget going 5 for 16 from the field The Turks dropped to 0-3 in the group despite 17 points from Hidayet Turkoglu and 14 from Mehmet Okur. But Bogdan Tanjevic's side made just four-of-25 three-pointers (16%) and nine-of-16 foul shots. "They played better than us and won. We have to just look forward, put this loss behind us and win as much as we can," said Turkoglu, who also grabbed eight rebounds. "It was a good game, a close game, but Slokar came off the bench and made some big three-pointers and it changed the whole game." Neither team really could stamp their authority on the game in the first quarter, which ended with Slovenia ahead 20-15. Their lead was up to 10 points, 27-17, on Slokar's free-throw midway through the second quarter. But Turkey finally turned up their game and reeled off a 12-4 run to close the first half to trail by just two, 31-29, at the break Turkoglu evened things up at 33-33 with a breakaway dunk in the early stages of the third period and Bogdan Tanjevic's troops soon found themselves ahead 39-36. But Slokar gave the Slovenians a spark off the bench, dishing out an assist, hitting two three-pointers and grabbing an offensive rebound as Ales Pipan's men went on a 10-0 spurt and led 46-40 after three periods. They continued their push in the fourth quarter, going on an 11-0 run to take a 57-40 lead with just over four minutes left. All told, Slovenia outscored Turkey 21-1 over the late third quarter and the start of the final frame and didn't allow their opponents to score in the period until Turkoglu's free-throw with 4:08 remaining. The NBA star did score six straight points and Engin Atsur drained a three-pointer to trim the margin to 59-49. But Turkey would get no closer the rest of the way. Turkey are all but eliminated and face Italy on Monday. The Slovenians can move to 4-0 in Group F when they take on Germany later Monday in Madrid.
