George and Mildred was a British sitcom produced by Thames Television that aired from 1976 to 1980. It was a spin-off of Man About the House and starred Brian Murphy and Yootha Joyce as an ill-matched married couple, George and Mildred Roper. It was written by Brian Cooke and Johnnie Mortimer. Like many sitcoms of the day, George and Mildred was also turned into a film which was dedicated to actress Yootha Joyce who suddenly died in 1980 just as the cast had looked so forward to recording a sixth series at the time. Mildred Bailey - Home Some time ago, several wonderful recordings by the Peter van Steeden Orchestra were uploaded; one of them was his superb own composition "Home". Dutch-born van Steeden was a composer of popular songs and a bandleader who made a few excellent records for Victor. Mildred Bailey was a talented and much underrated musician. She was one of the earliest white vocalists to catch the nuances of African-American jazz. She had a good sense of swing, and her timing underlined the sense of the words she sang. She was the sister of the singer Al Rinker, whom she followed into Paul Whiteman's band, where her brother and Bing Crosby had been part of the famous 'Rhythm Boys'. She cut discs with many swing stars, including guitarist Eddie Lang, but her best work dates from her time with Norvo's late 1930's group. This, however, is a wonderful rendition of van Steeden's best known song on one of her earliest records, made for Bluebird in 1931. The accompanying orchestra remained uncredited. DRESSELHAUS, Institute Professor and Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering, MIT There is much current excitement about the interesting advances in science and the unusual physical properties of carbon nanostructures, particularly carbon nanotubes and graphene, which are both of great interest at the present time. A brief review will be given of the physical underpinnings of carbon nanostructures that were developed over the past 60 years, starting with the electronic structure and physical properties of graphene and graphite, and then moving to graphite intercalation compounds which contained the first carbon nanostructures to be studied experimentally. Liquid carbon studies were precursors to the fullerene family of nanostructures and vapor grown carbon fibers were precursors to carbon nanotubes. She was also leading The (Original) Gospel Harmonettes, a female aggregation, who sang Gospel songs. In fact, this group was formed in 1940, and its first members were Mildred Madison Miller, Odessa Glasgow Edwards, Vera Conner Kolls, Willie M. Brooks Newberry and their composer was Evelyn Starks. The first recording of this group was in 1949, without Dorothy Love Coates, who started her recording with the (Original) Gospel Harmonettes in 1951. In the middle 1950s, the group was composed of D. Love, M. Miller, W. Newberry, V. Kolls, O. Edwards, with Herbert "Pee Wee" Pickard, piano. Their records were under the labels Victor, Speciality, Nashboro, Andex and Savoy. Here are some of their songs: "Come and Go With Me", "Every Day Will Be Sunday", "God Shall Wipe Away All Tears", "He's Got Everything You Need", "I'm On My Way", "I Won't Let Go", "Till My Change Comes", "That's Enough". Mildred Bailey - He's Not Worth Your Tears (1931) Mildred Bailey (February 27, 1907 December 12, 1951) was a popular American jazz singer during the 1930s. She was an early jazz singer with a sweet voice that belied her plump physique, Mildred Bailey balanced a good deal of popular success with a hot jazz-slanted career that saw her billed as Mrs. Swing (her husband, Red Norvo, was Mr. Swing). Born Mildred Rinker in Washington state in 1907, Bailey began performing at an early age, playing piano and singing in movie theaters during the early '20s. By 1925, she was the headlining act at a club in Hollywood, doing a mixture of pop, early jazz tunes, and vaudeville standards. Influenced by Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith, and Connie Boswell, she developed a soft, swinging delivery that pleased all kinds of nightclub audiences in the area. After sending a demonstration disc in to Paul Whiteman in 1929, she gained a spot with one of the most popular dance orchestras of the day. The added exposure with Whiteman soon gave Bailey her own radio program. She had already debuted on a recording date with guitarist Eddie Lang in 1929, but in 1932 she gained fame by recording what became her signature song, "Rockin' Chair" -- written especially for her by Hoagie Carmichael -- with a Whiteman small group. Recording for Vocalion during the 1930s, Bailey often utilized her husband, xylophonist Red Norvo. She also appeared on his recordings of the late '30s, and the arrangements of Eddie Sauter proved a perfect accompaniment to her vocals. Though she and Norvo later divorced, Bailey continued to perform and record during the 1940s. She appeared on Benny Goodman's Camel Caravan radio program, and gained her own series again during the mid-'40s. Hampered by health problems during the late '40s, she spent time in the hospital suffering from diabetes and died of a heart attack in 1951.
