Mongolia Part V: Milking a horse (a mare (female), dammit!) I had to drink the end-products of some of this stuff - airag (an alcoholic drink made from fermented mare's milk), mare's cheese, and some little chewy things made from mare's milk and flour. Airag has a vile flavour, but you get over it after a while. As for the rest... I couldn't eat and drink it every day. The noises the women make stimulate the horse to release more milk, which is what the young horse is there for too. Tags: nuodai mongolia horse mare milk töv монгол улс төв |

Mongolia: The Story SOUNDS OF GLOBAL WORSHIP: MONGOLIA, THE STORY The church in Mongolia is very young. Since there was no history of Christian music, the worship that Heart Sounds International found upon its arrival was almost entirely western translated songs. After several projects, including songwriting workshops and recordings, the church had composed almost 80 songs birthed from their own heart. It is a delight to now find the Mongolian Christians offering worship to the Lord which only they can uniquely create. dBICKFORD TRUTHTV RIOTS MONGOLIA RIGGED ELECTIONS! by Michael Kohn Tue Jul 1, 4:25 PM ET ULAN BATOR, Mongolia (AFP) - Mongolian President Nambariin Enkhbayar declared Tuesday a four-day state of emergency as protestors went on the rampage in the capital claiming that weekend elections were rigged. ADVERTISEMENT "From 11:30 pm (1530 GMT) on Tuesday there will be a four-day state of emergency," said a presidential decree read out on state television. The decree warned that anyone caught on the streets after the 10:00 pm curfew without documentation would be arrested. Public gatherings and independent media broadcasts were also banned. The action came after thousands of people took to the streets of the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator on Tuesday to voice their outrage at weekend elections they claim were rigged. The headquarters of the former communist Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) in the centre of Ulan Bator was set alight and looted, according to an AFP reporter and other witnesses at the scene. Some of an estimated 6,000 protesters from the rival Democratic Party -- which claims the MPRP bought votes and used other tactics to win Sunday's election -- threw rocks at firefighters arriving to put out the blaze. Police responded by firing rubber bullets and tear gas but the clashes continued and the violence later spread to other parts of the capital. A police station was attacked when protesters attempted to free rioters imprisoned earlier in the day. Part of the Cultural Palace, which contains an art gallery, a museum and a theatre, was on fire early Wednesday as violence continued despite the emergency decree. TV images showed riot police around the Cultural Palace apparently arresting people and firing rubber bullets in an attempt to secure the area. Later images appeared to show the situation was calmer. Early reports said 30 policemen and 25 civilians had been injured. A European photographer said he was been beaten by police when he attempted to take photographs of police violence. Politics in Mongolia, a country of 2.6 million people sandwiched between China and Russia, has a recent history of turmoil and disputes, but such violence is rare. The technically neutral President Enkhbayar -- previously with the MPRP -- summoned Prime Minister Sanjagiin Bayar and all opposition party leaders to an emergency security meeting earlier on Tuesday. At the meeting, broadcast live on the privately run Eagle television, the MPRP-affiliated Bayar renewed his calls for restraint while blaming the Democrats for inciting the rioters after losing the elections. Mongolia: Contemporary SOUNDS OF GLOBAL WORSHIP: MONGOLIA, CONTEMPORARY One of the earliest churches to compose their own songs in Mongolia is represented in this video. As one of the first churches to be powerfully established in the country they have had great impact within Mongolia and to the Mongolian disapora scattered beyond their borders. One of Mongolia's premier Christian composers, Ganchimeg Feodor, is from this church and wrote this song as a prayer for her country. It is widely sung and used. This represents a contemporary style, but they also very much value their Mongolian cultural roots and often blend indigenous instruments and dance in their worship celebrations. Mongolia Part IV: Tenger Ayalguu Music performance (Part IX) The instrument shown off in this video is the morin khuur, a horse-head fiddle. It's a 2-stringed bowed instrument with strings made from horse tail hair, and the head is usually sculpted to look like a horse's head, hence the name. When we were in the South Gobi, we saw a Mongolian music group. After having seen the performance, we decided to try and work towards bringing them over to the UK for a couple of weeks next summer so that their talents and Mongolia are better appreciated. More details about this will come soon. Tags: nuodai mongolia music performance монгол улс говь |

Mongolia National Anthem The Mongols gained fame in the 13th century when under Chinggis KHAN they conquered a huge Eurasian empire. After his death the empire was divided into several powerful Mongol states, but these broke apart in the 14th century. The Mongols eventually retired to their original steppe homelands and later came under Chinese rule. Mongolia won its independence in 1921 with Soviet backing. A Communist regime was installed in 1924. Following a peaceful democratic revolution, the ex-Communist Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) won elections in 1990 and 1992, but was defeated by the Democratic Union Coalition (DUC) in the 1996 parliamentary election. Since then, parliamentary elections returned the MPRP overwhelmingly to power in 2000, but 2004 elections reduced MPRP representation and, therefore, its authority. Modern Nomads - Mongolia Nov 1996 A look at how Mongolia's new capitalism has prompted a nomadic revival. On the grasslands, it's time to brand the wild ponies. Nomadic farmer, Jamts, is marking out his property. In post-communist Mongolia, nomads are once again permitted to own their own livestock. Inside their traditional ger tent, Jamts' wife, Dorj, prepares the day's fresh milk and cream. With skilful management of their resources, Jamts and Dorj have brought up 13 children. But as Mongolia heads for full blown capitalism, nomads now battle with powerful market forces. Jamts has thrived where many have failed because his enterprising nephew, Mendsaikhan, helps him sell produce in the city. Mendsaikhan takes Jamts' adult daughter, Pagma, back home for a visit. Far away from city nightclubs and medical student life, Pagma falls back into the nomadic routine. Haggling at the market, Mendsaikhan gets a good price for his uncle's sheepskins. Traders like he and Jamts can provide Mongolia's stumbling economy with much needed income. But government advisers believe that the nomadic lifestyle will inevitably collide with economic reform.
