Rush - The Necromancer 1/2 The Necromancer is by Rush from their 1975 album "Caress of Steel" and is their fourth longest song, behind Hemispheres, 2112, and The Fountain of Lamneth. A necromancer is one who practices necromancy, a type of divination involving the summoning of Operative Spirits to discern information about the future. "The Necromancer" starts with heavy influence from The Lord of the Rings novels (written by J. R. R. Tolkien), with Frodo, Samwise, and Gollum as the "three travelers" and Sauron as the Necromancer. The song departs from the story of the book as Part III sees the return of By-Tor from the song "By-Tor & The Snow Dog" from the 1975 Fly by Night album, this time as a hero and not a villain.
